  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cost of Scarlet

Is the fixed Scarlet a "prosumer" camera? I didn't realize the Scarlet 2/3 prices tag could add up so quickly. I'm not sure all the lenses that can be used on them (or why they would at least cost $950?!). But the scarlet lens looks smaller than my HDV prosumer camera.

Red has always described their prodcucts as preofessional gear for professionals.

There are plenty of people out there that are covering the "prosumer" market. RED isn't one of them.

Size has nothing to do with how professional a tool might be.

The reason why people have confused it with the prosumer line is because the aggressive pricing makes it available to people who previously only had funding for a prosumer camera.

Unless I’m missing something here, my basic Scarlet package, “minus”
lenses, comes to something more like this:

Scarlet Interchangeable Brain ……………. $ 2,750.oo

7” LCD Screen …………………………… $ 2,500.oo

Scarlet Base Plate ……………………… $ 500.oo

Top Mount …………………………… $ 200.oo

Scarlet Module Adapter ……………….. $ 300.oo

Pro I/O Module ………………………. $ 2,950.oo

Red Drive …………………………… $ 900.oo

Side Handle ………………………………...... $ 950.oo

Bottom Handle ………………………………... $ 350.oo

Shoulder Dovetail ………………………… $ 550.oo (?)

Body Cap ………………………………......... $ 12.oo

And, at this stage of the game, this is only an estimate. If you really want to
start producing with a Scarlet, this seems more along the lines of a reasonable price to me.
I don’t know why you guys think you can get away with a mere $10,000.oo.

When you consider what you get for your money, especially compared with HD “tape” video cameras, what the heck is $26,000.oo.

I will be so bold as to just buy the Fixed package with some extra Flash cards and see how far I will go with that. And I'm looking forward to a lot of improvisation :)

I have the luxury of not having to make money from it though.

Firstly, you don't know what people are planning to use their Scarlet for, or what hoops can be jumped through and still get usable footage. The camera is still a metal shell, so none of us know yet.

Also, you are adding in a whole host of stuff that people probably have mic/computer/software etc, plus you have two base plates and a red drive + SSD module... it is a skewed view.

Can the Fixed Scarlet modules be taken apart to say be used on the Scarlet Inter? I understand that the lens may not come off but will the other stuff be?

If you are putting $26k into a 2/3" Scarlet package, Nikon lenses would be a poor choice. You need format specific lenses for best results. But that is the beauty of the modular system, the camera can be built to a working system at many different price levels.

Why would you buy a 2/3" / 2k finish camera if you had a $26k+ budget?

For anyone elses 2/3" camera $26k is about the practical minimum package too. it goes up from there. So still a good buy. I would buy the 2/3" for general motion production work, non-narrative, for the same general reasons I shot 16mm film. Frankly I prefer the format.

My take on a practical well rigged balanced over the shoulder Cinema field production package to replace a super 16mm film camera.

IMHO you guys are getting OUT OF CONTROL with these 2/3rd shootable package estimates.

To me it seems like you guys are throwing the kitchen sink at the systems, and its just slightly disingenuous, or at least thats my P.O.V.

There is a significant difference between bare minimum necessities to shoot at all and a truly practical and useful field package for general purpose industrial/commercial/creative production work.

One can always rent extra equipment as needed. But in my case the nearest rental houses are a 4 hour round trip away. Having all the basic production essentials on hand is, well, essential.:hat:

Scarlet Cinema Brain - 2750
RED pl mount - 500
Side Handle - 950
Side CF Module - 500
16GB CF Card - 500
2.8" LCD - 900
PL Mount 16mm zoom - 1000

7,100

Now that's bare bones, but the point is it will get you shooting.

The thing I think most people need to clarify when the ask these questions is do you want:

a) a camera that can shoot footage

or (what I think most people really mean)

b) what will make me a one stop shop for basic RED Cinema Production.

In that case you will need much more. This was mentioned earlier by someone in this thread and I think it needs saying again...you need to consider what other companies are counting in on their prices when you make these lists.

Well, you need batteries and a charger too. And only one CF card is too bare-bones to be realistic, even for a stripped-down package.

And you are sure to need ND filters if you are going outside, but let's just put that into the category that includes a tripod and whatnot, things you aren't buying from Red.

Since I first heard of the Scarlet, I've been trying to learn as much as I can from lurking here. I am a relative newcomer to cinematography/videography and photography in general, so my prespective will be vastly different than many of the very experienced and talented members here. (Everyone has to start somewhere, right?) That said, I've spec'd out both a Scarlet Fixed and Cinema purchase plan which I believe would work for a newcomer like myself.

Code:
RED Scarlet Fixed Kit: $4750
RED 4x16GB CF: $1400
Top Mount: $200
Mic: $200
RED Reader: $200
-----------------------------------
Total $6750

RED Scarlet Cinema Body $2750
RED MiniPrime $950
2.8” LCD $900
REDmote $550
Side CF Module $500
Battery Module $1250
RED 4x16GB CF: $1400
Top Mount: $200
Mic: $200
RED Reader $200
-----------------------------------
Total $8900

Miscellaneous cables and accessories, computer upgrades, storage, and software are not included. Additionally, you could probably swap out the CF cards for a RED drive to save some money + a couple 8GB cards to still have a solid state recording option if necessary.

The major issue I have is with the cost of the Cinema loadout. To get relatively equal functionality, (and with a single, non-zoom lens,) it costs $2150 more. As a part-time enthusiast and a student, that is a very large difference for generally less functionality. Personally, I'm planning on buying the Fixed, though I think the best option if you want the Cinema is to buy a Fixed kit, then sell the the body for the cost of the Scarlet Cinema + a MiniPrime. ($3700) There will always be someone willing to pay that price for a Fixed body. I know I would!

I'm afraid to say what all modules I am going to spend my money on. As soon as I quote my projected Scarlet packages, there will be more modules I could buy...

Sorry to skip a bit from the subject, but, RED ONE costs 17K and Scarlet S35 7K. RED ONE has smaller chip and there you have it less quality image. What are the dvantages of RED ONE against Scarlet S35 that are worth 10K.

Just a couple of little corrections. The last word on the S35 brain was:
  • 5K, not 7K
  • $7,000, not $10,000
