  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE M-X Sensor Upgrade Program

This came earlier than I thought it would. Getting an 800 iso native sensor in the old body really keeps the pressure on the other camera companies. It also bridges the gap while we wait for the Epic. Can't wait to see the added stops of dynamic range in action.

I'm also wondering if the physical size of the sensor is the larger variety. I'd love to get full S35 4.5K out of the old body.

Keep rolling team!

This is great news but I would really like to see a BEFORE & AFTER video if you guys could release that to us. A low iso scene with the original M sensor and the same scene with M-X. Then maybe a high detailed, well lit shot for another example?

The sensor's photosites (pixels) are the same size as the RED One Mysterium. So you won't see any increase in image area. Because of the internal bandwidth limitations of the RED One, you're limited to 4.5K. The new sensor will shoot all the same resolutions, formats and frame rates we have now. What we gain is better DR via lower noise, increased sensitivity and faster read reset times (less rolling shutter / skew).

Redone currently has a reset time of 9m/s i believe, does this upgrade bring the sensor to 5? I just want to clarify that, if so that's great news for action shots.

That's pretty good.

Do you know any other still photo or cine digital camera that can get upgraded like this?

We HIGHLY recommend a RED Rocket™ card to anyone posting RED footage. Those of you that have one know what I mean. Not a sales pitch... just a fact.

Jim

boah, we already have two red rockets ... any chance to get a discount on the upgrade for that? (early birds bought the first rockets...)

Troy, I've heard "rumors" that the MX sensor in a Red One body has reduced jello in extreme situations like being mounted on an RC chopper. I didn't see it myself, though, so can't confirm it.

David, I don't see the contradiction. Both quotes say the same thing. Can you explain which bit(s) you're confused about?
I didn't say there is any, just trying to understand if keeping my cameras top notch is going to cost $32,500 each? Seems yes.
Now we go to Stage 2.
Looks like the only difference in accessories is the 5" LCD. I assume it will be different from the 5.6" monitor I have now.
As for the price Net price is $19,500. To keep the camera on the technology front and updating the sensor now you pay $4500 total will be $24000.
If you have more than one camera you have more options while you move. Like upgrading two cameras for $9000 and going with one for stage two for $19,500. This will result have both cameras upgraded, keeping 1 camera in the form of Epic inside Red One on the outside. Total cost $28,500 but do you end up with three cameras?

As it is written "…RED ONE owners that wish to keep their RED ONE."

Can that be true or am I missing a point? For $28,500 you upgrade two cameras ($9000) and go with one of them for stage 2 which will get you an Epic and allow you to keep your Red One?

If you choose to upgrade now ($4500) and leap directly to stage three, in which you trade Red One for Epic.
So now you trade the other one, which you could have upgraded or save $4500.
This stage cost you $10,500. Now we have 2 Epics (the second one fro stage 3 will have 2.8" LCD for some reason) and one upgraded Red One for a total of $39,000 (or $34,500 if you only upgraded 1 Red One)
Someone, better be a CPA, should check my math because usually I am wrong.

Should be greatly reduced jello, skew, rolling shutter or whatever you want to call it. As Troy points out above, M-X has a faster read reset time. It's been said before that it's about 5ms with the new sensor. The current sensor is about 9ms. A film camera's shutter is somewhere closer to 4ms.

That last post is confusing me now.

It's pretty simple. You can pay $5750 to upgrade a RED One to the new sensor. It is still a RED One just like it is now, but with the better sensor. Better DR, sensitivity, less skew. Same frame rates and resolutions.

If you are selected for Stage-1, well, that's for a lucky few, so it doesn't really matter. So then let's talk about Stage-2. People who choose Stage-2 can keep their RED One just like it is. If they choose to upgrade the sensor of the RED One, it costs $4500 for those buying Epic-X through Stage-2. If you have already upgraded your sensor and are doing Stage-2, then you get a $1250 credit, to make it the $4500 upgrade cost as advertised.

Those doing Stage-1 or Stage-2 keep their RED One, upgraded or not, their choice. And they get the Epic-X camera package, full new camera. No Epic inside a RED body or anything like that. I'm not sure what you were saying there.

... 1 camera in the form of Epic inside Red One on the outside...

Hi David,
I think this is where you're confused, stage 1 (which by the way is only available to a selected few) does not get you an Epic-X in a Red One Body, it will be an Epic-X form factor, only not black, see the picture here : http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=37011&page=2

So you get to keep your Red One, if you're stage 1, you will have upgraded, undoubtebly, and you have a new camera.

Cheers,
Damien

OK. No Epic inside a RED body or anything like that. That was something I understood while writing the post but forgot to change.
However, going for stage 2, are you ending with two cameras? The new Epic and the old Red One?

yes. for stage 2 you keep your red one(which you also can upgrade the sensor for $4500) and get the epicx.

Happy for you RED ONE guys :)

Make sure to post new footage for us noobs to see! :)

The R1 M-X Sensor upgrade program will begin next Friday (Jan. 22nd)
Footage from the upgraded cameras will need to be processed using a new version of REDCINE-X that will be released next week with the SDK to follow.

Witch SDK are coming? Mac/Win/Linux?
Will the new SDK have RocketSupport even for Linux, or does that still need some work...

Customers that upgrade their cameras and decide to enter STAGE 1 or STAGE 2 of the epic program will receive a credit back of $1250 at the time they enter either of those 2 stages.
Lets say you have 2 cameras, can you upgrade one of them and go with the second one for stage 2? Will you be entitle for the $1250 credit?

Pay $5,750 to upgrade one camera and get one credit of $1,250 when you keep that same camera and buy a stage 2 Epic for $18,250 ($19,500 - $1,250).

If you have two separate cameras you should keep track of all upgrades and credits separately.
