  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just fill in:

(sqrt(SensorA_sideX^2+SensorA_sideY^2))/(sqrt(SensorB_sideX^2+SensorB_sideY^2))

That makes

(sqrt(36^2+24^2))/(sqrt(10.1^2+5.35^2)) for FF-relative crop factor, or ~3.8

Or 2.45 vs. Red One, or ~2.93 vs MysteriumX-S35.

It's a bit hard to calculate because the aspect ratio is so different.

FF35 = 36mmx24mm
Scarlet 2/3" = 10.1mmx5.35mm

So, horizontal crop factor = 36/10.1 = 3.56, vertical crop factor = 24/5.35 = 4.49, diagonal crop factor = (sqrt(36^2+24^2)/sqrt(10.1^2/5.35^2)) = 3.79.

So, pick your poison.

crop is around 3.6, not the 3K is the problem but the size of the sensor.. 2/3 sensor will use just the center of the lens, and needs 100line/mm lens resulotion... and canon (dslr) lenses dont have it!! neither nikon :(

Can you explain this a little bit better? Why would RED go through the trouble of making Canon and Nikon lenses an option for Scarlet and Epic with mounts and everything if the lenses would NOT be sufficient to use? Maybe I am mis-understanding your statement (which I hope is the case).

I do not mean dont use canon, nikon etc lenses for 2/3 scarlet. I just want to point that problem. DSLR lenses are perfect for s35 or FF scarlet, epic! I have many nikon prime and zoom, and asked nikon rep. about the lens resolution and it is around 50-70 line/mm
Scarlet 2/3 sized 3K sensor has a very litle pixel size:3.2 micron.. so U need HIGH RES OPTICS!! S35 sensore has 5.4 micron size, so almost a half res lens would be fine.
I read here somewhere (sorry, I cant find that topic), that scarlet 2/3 needs 100 line /mm res. lenses. thats why dslr lenses wouldnt be fine for 3K with 2/3 sensor.
Of course need tests!

I would have thought you would want nearer 200line/mm lens resoloution for a 2/3 sensor for cinema display
 
Just a request, may seem a bit out of the way but was just wondering...

is it possible to get the Mini Primes in the palm of a hand kind of shot? Just for perspective understanding...just wanna see how small these things really are! Look incredible and such a good price too its incredible...

I know FF35 Nikon and Canon lenses can't resolve the full 3k resolution of the 2/3" Scarlet but doesn't that just mean the image will be a bit soft if viewed at the full 3k resolution?

This means you may not want to use FF35 lenses on the 2/3" Scarlet if you are doing a 35mm film out but I imagine the footage would look sharp at 1080.

I guess we will have to wait to test them to know exactly how it will look like but I think FF35 primes will look fine for medium - long shots viewed at 1080.

I can't help but ask... do you have a more reliable/credible source that shows the Canon/Nikon lenses only produce 50-70 line/mm of resolution? I had some store reps from retailers tell me some pretty ridiculous lies, so I am hesitant to just take someone's word without seeing some real proof. Doing some random online searching for this doesn't seem to show any information of this sort?

Thoughts?

Yes! U are right, image wil be a bit soft, but HOW BIT, we do not know that.
I am sure, red-mini is sharper on scarlet 2/3 , compare to dslr lens... but we would get also excellent result with dslr lenses....

Lauri, If I am to understand these MTF charts correctly, most of the Canon lenses (including their L series lenses which are considered Pro lenses) start to drop in contrast quality significantly when they get closer towards 20 lines/mm. So 50-70 lines/mm seems like an awful big stretch for some of their lenses.

I would be really interested to see what the RED lenses MTF charts look like to compare.

I appreciate all the help... I just learned something new today :)

Hi is not being silly at all.

He is saying FF35 SLR lenses are likely to be softer then lenses designed for 2/3" at 3k when viewed at full resolution. All of the data out there supports this.
