  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3rd Party Mounts - Warning

Its important to point out that the prototype mount we saw last year from Birger did not void the warranty. This is the first time we have seen the new design.

I can understand you're not going to cover damage caused by mount or its installation, but it doesn't seem right that it would void the warranty on unrelated parts... like if the fans failed or the CPU failed etc. Sound fair?

Hopefully Erik (with RED's guidance) can fix the issue to the point the mount/installation is unlikely to cause damage.

This is an interesting point..

Jarred, what say you?

Obviously they're going to work this out, Erik has massive incentives to make this work or he's going to have to refund a lot of money and he spent the last 6 months for nothing. The bummer though is that it indicates yet another delay in the birger saga. Does anyone know what specificly was the problem? I'm presuming since they just shipped back Erik's own camera to him that this was the actual Birger test camera. If so, that's very discouraging that Erik himself botched it.

I am not sure I agree with the assumptions you are making here.

Even though we had never seen the new changed mount, we are very comfortable that Birger can modify the new mount to fit inside our warranty policy. If everyone relaxes a bit, it will be OK. We just needed to let our customers know the situation because this new mount now seem to be entering the market. Birger knows the issues and I'm sure will solve this problem. He is a smart guy.

It is important to us for our customers to have access to a Canon mount, we just need it not to blow the camera up... :-)

Normally all power out from the cameras do have fusible links protections or the power supply self shut down on the short.

So I don’t think that just the short on the power output cable on RED should damage the camera internal circuits.

Many times it may happen that external cables from the camera are pinched or cut and in the worse case you have to send the camera for internal fuse link replacement.
Yes, they charge $$ for it.

If the /i cable is shorted, or pinched then it is a different story.
I hope that RED will work out the problem with Birger especially in light that some /i equipped lenses could be a bit out of tolerance on its connectors and could short /i pins during the lenses installation as well.

Unprotected /i interface pins left without protection of fusible links inside the camera, is asking for trouble even if used only with the legacy lenses equipped with /i interface.

if you are not trained in repair or installation of the kind of equipment you have in front of you

Who's trained on installing a Birger mount? I'm not even sure Erik is fully trained at this point. I've ripped apart and put together a lot of stuff. A friend of mine is an electronics engineer who fixes the 25million dollar cameras that shoot CPU chips at Intel. Maybe I need to give the Birger to him to install.

Exhaling... Thank you.

I am in the loop with RED on the issues that have arisen, and I find it important to clarify one issue: All versions of this product through the prototype phase have required *EXACTLY* the same degree of disassembly of the camera.

I just spoke with Stuart, who is my official liason at RED, and hope to see further comment/clarification on this issue later today.

This board has tendency to over react. Please wait a day before doing so.

Also the damage to the camera sounds like it was the cause of the cable and the powering of an external unit not the actual installation of the mount.

it sounds like if you never mounted the birger mount to the camera but just plugged it in for testing it would of created the same problem.

Is this the case?

All speculation here. Was it an internal cable that got pinched and shorted or an external one that shorted somehow? When Erik or RED explains what the actuall problem was then you will have something to work with.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!

Which ones? That this will cause a delay or that that was Erik's own camera? I sure hope I'm wrong about both of those and that the birger is shipping promptly and that the one camera that came in was an anomaly done by a careless camera owner. I'm basing it on the fact that Erik had to ship his camera back to RED for repairs this week and jarred says this is the first birger mount they've seen....

once again, I hope I'm wrong.

I hear ya.. I hope you're wrong too!!

I have no doubt Erik will fill us in on what's going on once he get's it all straight.

Jay

Well the mount has now changed as it's being powered from the rear, which seems to get round the power issues that blew the cam up. Maybe that in itself will place it back in warranty.

once again, I hope I'm wrong.

Could be Aqua's camera. He installed a Birger and the camera failed after an hour of use.

This reminds me of that scene in the first Indiana Jones
"Asps... very dangerous. You go first."

Thanks for going first Aqua. :clown2:

Possible Solution?

Possible Solution?

I implore Red to consider the following option:

In the auto indsutry, some car companies will allow third party products to be installed without voiding the warranty. There are almost always conditions. Such conditions can include, but would not be limited to: having the modification made at a dealership, or by certified technicians, and/or that the particular aftermarket part ONLY come from certain manufacturers, etc.

I would be more than happy to pay Red to install my Birger. Or pay Birger to do it with Red's blessing (ie without voiding the warranty).

I'd even be willing to fly somewhere with my camera and be trained and certified to do it so I can change between mounts.

Please consider these options. Birger is part of the revolution in my opinion, and I would hate to see the Red revolution slow down or pause because of this issue.

EDIT: Jim's post eased my concern.
