This might sound odd coming from a prospective purchaser, but I actually don't want Scarlet to be ridiculously underpriced vis a vis the competition.

$4K gets you 1/3" three chip, HD resolution.
$7K gets you 1/2" three chip, HD resolution.

$3.5K gets you 2/3" single chip, 2.5K resolution??

I know the 7D and 5D throw a real wrench into the works, but still (no pun intended) in many aspects those are not viable motion cameras.

But the money you are saving is necessary to get more computing power to edit said R3d files.... You think it will be as easy as editing SD on a MBP? (Not that you said that)

Ya next thing you know my neighbor is shooting his kids birthday in 6k! JK! I have a feeling this thread is about to get ugly...

Should be interesting!

I have to agree. I don't care about people getting good quality for cheap but cheap attracts the haters and uneducated.

The Reduser.net forums will be clogged with spam and bong resin.

Look at scarletuser.com half the post are sarcastic or negative put downs to Red/Jim personally.

Being a poor college student/independent film-maker, someone asking to not make something cost as little as possible sounds ridiculously insane to me. Just because you price something low doesn't mean an uneducated, consumer audience will be buying RED cameras all of a sudden.

It matters who the company is aiming for. Right now, RED is in the professional camera market, not the consumer market. The day RED starts selling their cameras at Best Buy and Target is the day your average consumer picks one up. Sorry, but I don't believe price has too much to do with anything. I've seen people pick up ridiculously priced items because they have "the best technology". It's all about who a company advertises to.

So, for the people out there who love film, but may not make profits off of their love yet, please don't raise prices more than necessary. :)

They why do you still visit if you dislike it? :001_rolleyes: (For the record, I believe that statement to be false. Just my opinion though...)

Being a poor college student/independent film-maker ...

Believe me I understand your situation.

But a poor college student does not require a camera that may well be the equivalent of a $150,000 camera that's been regularly used to shoot primetime TV and feature films, i.e. Sony's F23.

Such a camera is much closer to being a luxury item than a necessary staple good for the impoverished.

that's pretty dang untrue. scarletuser folks are bored and hyper, but for the most part they get along quite well and are relatively tolerant of each other without too much fighting in context... except of course for the occasional bad eggs, but they don't generally last very long.

But, then... you've only been a member there for all of 30 days, so...

Can you please explain what you mean here? Sounds like nonsense to me.

I don't think that $1k or $2k price increase will make the difference of how people behave on the internet. ;)

On a serious note, I'm more worried that the low price of Scarlet may affect the value of Epic and Red1 than I'm worried about the competition. As long as 90% of what we shoot ends up being compressed to lower res formats, the difference of shooting 3k, 4,k, and 5k may not justify the $21k price difference between say, Scarlet S35 and Epic S35 (the o.g. R1 may not be worth much anymore). I know there are many more spec differences but will they be enough to tip the scales?
Enough to justify the higher day rates to the client who may not be tech savvy?

On top of that, the Scarlet and Epic brains look almost identical.... and they are using the same modules.

Just throwing it out there.

Cheers,

Milan

I would rephrase to "cheap attracts the masses, and the masses can at times be quick to judge and dismiss what it means to have a professional grade digital CINEMA camera, and not a digital video camera."

I am by no means a professional filmmaker, but a low-budget, partially educated indie filmmaker. The majority of my work has been in narrative films and so when the Scarlet was announced, it was the perfect camera for someone in my position--a pro digital cinema made for shooting films.

But with the such low-low price it has now gained an audience far beyond those who make films to include virtually video makers of any kind. It pains me to know that there will be people out there dumbing down their Scarlets to shoot birthdays and kids sporting events, and they may never know or care to know the full potential and revolution that the Scarlet cameras can do.

I am by no measure advocating higher prices, this is just an unfortunate result of too low prices. Guess what I'm saying is I just want everyone who buys a Scarlet to appreciate it as much as I do.

Looking into a Red One it is not the body that makes the cost 17,500 is nothing compared to the 60,000 once you have a viable kit to work with. The base body should have no expense spared but should not have a exorbitant premium just because. I feel Red will do the right thing and price it in reason, and so what if the haters invade the forums, just don't reply to them and they will go elsewhere. They are like a cold, it is going to happen at some point you just deal with it and it will eventually go away. For people worried about people using these for kids sporting events, etc I think it is a good thing that way we can document the world in a new level of clarity.

more power to those taping their kid's sports, as long as they know the power and value of the camera they hold in the hands and accept the increased complexities of shooting with a cinema camera vs a cheap handheld consumer camera.

I agree, when someone claimed us on SU are just negative, heck we're sarcastic, but not negative.... but alot of people on there are VERY helpful
