  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi Red team,

I'd like to ask you to add a feature to B16. I'd love to bypass the media format confirmation prompt. That was actually a nice bug on an early build 15 beta.

What I want is this. If I insert an empty card (or a card missing a predetermined file) back on the camera, that card would be automatically formatted. No confirmation needed.

Of course, this has to be each user's choice, so enable and disable is a must.

Thanks,

ching

The auto format thing that the one version of Build 15 did scared me. Its just a bad idea and I'm glad that Red got rid of it. I mean how long does it take you to re-format the media...or at least get to the menu. I like having that safety feature.

Ok guys,

Don't panic. As I already said before, you'd have both choices, enabled and disabled.

Safety is also my main concern. That's why I said "if I insert an EMPTY card back to the camera".

Why would you need to confirm the formatting of an empty card? If I'd deleted a card previously, that'd already be my confirmation.

Thanks,

ching

What if, due to a bug, the camera think it's looking at an empty card that is not and then reformat that card... Ouch...

I´d rather spent this onew more second to confirm the formatting than let it autoformat. No, no, no !!!

Why Do New Need To Format At All?

Why Do New Need To Format At All?

What really wonders me:

WHY DO NEW NEED TO FORMAT AT ALL?

We have a bunch of CF cards and some RED DRIVEs. Most time we use the CF cards for shooting and the RED DRIVEs as collecting backup media.

Main reason is that changing certain resolutions / speeds requires the media to be reformatted. Using the RED DRIVE is then mostly a no-go, since you may have already gigabytes of data on it, which can not be swapped out quickly.

So we use the small sized CF cards for shooting & frequent reformatting, which hardly fit as a long term "shoot & keep it as backup" media.

Now my point:

When I connect the RED DRIVE with all the data from different shootings (resolutions, frequencies) on it to the RED ONE, I can play all those files.

Its 2008 guys, do we really need to format a media just to alter the resolution for the next clip we shoot?

Why at all?

Media speed is clearly affected by file system block sizes etc. But there is always only ONE optimum block size for a maximum speed. So it should be possible to align compression encoder output chuncks to this block size and it should be done.
