If I could raise the $$ and was selected by RED, I would love to get to Stage ONE. Even if I don't make it, I still consider myself "A-List" in my loyalty and appreciation as a hard-core RED user.

Stage ONE (Tattoo)
----------------

$ 3,200 Bomb EVF
$ 550 REDMote
$ 500 Side CF Module
$ 300 Module Adapter
$ 2,950 Pro I/O Module
$ 1,250 Pro Battery Module
2 REDVolt
Travel Charger
--------------------------
$28,000

(3-5 month head-start, but $5,700 more expensive than Stage TWO when considering the difference in modules)
(KEEP RED ONE!!!)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stage TWO
----------------
$ 1,600 5" LCD ($1,600 difference Stage ONE)
$ 550 REDMote
$ 500 Side CF Module
$ 300 Module Adapter
$ 1,750 Base I/O Module ($1,200 difference)
$ 1,250 Pro Battery Module
2 REDVolt
Travel Charger
--------------------------
$19,500

(Savings: $8,500 minus difference in modules ($2,800) = $5,700 cheaper than Stage ONE)
(KEEP RED ONE!!!)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stage THREE
----------------
$ 900 2.8" LCD ($700 difference Stage TWO)
$ 550 REDMote
$ 500 Side CF Module
$ 300 Module Adapter
$ 1,750 Base I/O Module
$ 1,250 Pro Battery Module
2 REDVolt
Travel Charger
--------------------------
$10,500

(Savings: $9,000 - ($700 difference between Stage TWO) = $8,300 cheaper than Stage TWO)
(BUT NO MORE RED ONE!!!)

If I'm doing my math right you could probably do Stage 2 and then sell your RED used for more than the $8300 extra dollars you're spending to keep it. Right?

I'm trying to figure out if I'm Stage 2 or 3. And what's a used RED worth at that point? Surely they'll devalue when Scarlet arrives. Or am I wrong?

At the moment I'm stage 3 as I have 2 cameras and don't need a 3rd or 4th (unless it is FF camera)

If I have to wait till camera 6500-7000 takes its option on stage 2 before I can get a epic through stage 3... I will have to take stage 2 on both my cameras and sell the 2 Reds I end up with for as close to $8300 as I can get..

My worry is load of people will do this when the Epic option comes up and the market will be flooded with Red cameras.

regards

Michael

PS Just seem Joel's post and I reckon loads of us will be doing the same... $8300 might be difficult with Scarlet around the corner and everyone wanting an Epic.

stage 2 fo sho. keep the red.. put in new sensor.. and have a new epic..
But heres a question.. will we get the same specs as a epix x with our upgraded red ones?
(in frame rates?)

I believe RED has stated that upgrading the sensor on RED ONE will just get you better dynamic range, no additional framerates.

Right,... frame rate is a matter of the other camera internals not just the sensor. The upgrade gets you 5k for the 20% rez loss from the OLPF, to give you 4k.

You sure the upgrade gets you 5K rez? I thought all it was improving was the dynamic range. Everything else, including frame rates and max resolutions, would stay the same.

If I can sell the Vette or Harley .... I'm stage 1. The gun collection is not for sale.

It might be interesting to add a "no stage" choice, just keep making movies with RED ONE.

Well I'm pretty sure they're placing 5k pixels into the same amount of area as the current sensor, so the lens will fill 5k, don't know if it would be used, but it would seem it should be. Maybe it will only fill 4.5k, not really 100% sure. Any of the Red team able to answer this?

I'd have to say stage 3 as I don't think that there will be any market for a used red one when the epic releases and I don't need 2 cameras. However a used red one for $10k? -could be tempting to someone.

Who would buy a camera that is heavy, bulky, gives noisy images in de dark and needs lots of batteries for that price when you can get a new Scarlet s35 for less money?

I agree, there won't be much of a market for old Red Ones after Epic and Scarlet come out. Even if you upgrade your R1 people will still prefer an Epic or Scarlet over it. I think once Epics and Scarlets are avail a R1 with the upgrade would be resellable for about the price of a S35 Scarlet. That makes a non-upgraded Red worth about $3-4k once Epics and Scarlets are out. Maybe I will be wrong.

I am for Stage 1, but my number (973) is most likely way too higher to ever get a shot, so I will be doing Stage 3.

Definately stage 3. Unless there are some interesting news about the Monstro FF35 Epic... Then I might wanna wait for that one.

And if I need a second cam, I can always buy a Scarlet later :
Stage 2 would cost $13500 if I count the $4500 sensor upgrade, for that price I could probably get a S35 Scarlet + accessories... which, compared to a Red One :
- boots faster,
- has a higher resolution,
- is lighter and smaller,
- more modular,
- has a wireless Redmote,
- is less power-hungry,
- has a much improved easier and quicker interchangeable lens mount system,
- makes better use of Canon/Nikon lenses,
- supports (probably ?) LDS and /i lenses
- can be used with a touchscreen
- has improved backfocus adjustments,
- has better heat management,
- has a real still mode with Flash support and everything,
- downconverted 1080p recording,
- and probably other goodies yet to be revealed...
The main downside is slower framerates, but for that I'll have the Epic, so I don't really care.

A no-brainer, actually. (and YES, I still love my Red One :yesnod: !)

I don't know if it's just me or the Red is getting buried to ealry! The Red is still kicking ass and being put to sleep! Something just ain't right...

I plan on using as many of my old accessories as possible on the Epic-X Level ONE. $30K is the maximum I can come up with at once and that includes borrowing money from friends / family.

RED ONE #561 will stay in use as long as there is demand. When I finish paying off my loans and demand for the RED ONE stops, only then will it be retired from use. Then I can put it in a glass case along with my titanium "R" to start my collection.

It might take a while for the Scarlet S35 to become available, even after Epic ships. Until then the Red One should retain a good chunk of its value since it will still be much more affordable than a new Epic.

I feel the same way, I actually want to upgrade to the Mysterium-X and pay off the upgrade then use it as a back up camera to the Epic-X for my features. But, the glass case next to the "R"- that I can get into, along with that watch we used to see for a year on the RED website- for those who remember.

I'm #87, I'm hoping to get on Stage I, with RED 1 sensor upgrade. I understand I may not be selected- that's caused me two self inflicted insomnia-tic nights so far. Excited about the possibility.

Hi,

Once Scarlet ships about right , with the upgrade for $4500 it needs to be no more than a S35 Scarlet which does 60fps with 35mm DOF.

We have two Red Ones.

If we go for option two—keep one Red One body and upgrade it to Mysterium-X and then buy an Epic-x—that will cost us $24,000 (19,500 plus $4.500).

I could then sell the second body to offset the cost of the $24,000 but how much is a Red one after this announcement date going to be worth? How can we know? Anybody have any ideas?

If we go for option three, and trade in one of the Red One bodies, we will then have one left over. Will there be a route to upgrade that second body to Mysterium X for $4,500 or will we have to leave it with the original chip? It will make a much better second camera with the new chip.

I think this may be a quandary for most multiple owners (and I think there are a fair amount of multiple owners).

Does Red have any plans for this situation? Did I miss a post somewhere?
