I am always amused by the argument that digital is always cheaper than film. I spend way more on camera bodies than I ever did on film & processing.

My 2 Nikon F2's from the 1970's still going strong, last serviced 1990.

I came to this realization a little while ago. I was looking at selling my 40D and Sony FX7 and consolidating on a 5DMII so I would have a still camera to use with my Canon lenses that I use on the red with a birger mount.

When I got around to it they had just come out with the 500d which is 15MP and 720p video for $700 (sold my 40D to a friend for $650). 720P was fine for my family type video and when I started considering another $1700 for a 5D I figured I could buy a lot of film for that if I wanted any more "professional" still pictures.

So I bought an EOS ElanII in mint condition for $24 on ebay (from a camera store no less). Works flawlessly with my lenses and film is about $3 a roll and $7 or so for processing plus CD so I figure I can shoot about 170 rolls of film before I catch up to what I would have spent on a 5D. The CD scans are decent and if I need better I always have the negative.

I didn't say that at all. Why are you making stuff up? The only thing I said is that Charters is using Canon DSLRs on Hollywood projects, like 24, which doesn't air until January.

Your post actually did make it sound like they were using the camera as the primary camera, and you did not say 24 or January in that post, at least that is how I read it as well:

Get Rodney Charters and Shane Hurlbut to stop using it in Hollywood and Canon won't be able to say it.

First, my post says nothing about how little or how much Rodney uses it on the show, you guys just made assumptions about what I meant. Second, everything after the first comma is clarification of both posts I made that he was referencing (you're only talking about the first). It probably should have been parenthetical but it is of little consequence to me.

To sum it up, the fact of the matter is that the Canon DSLRs are getting Hollywood work however small or large that body of work is. Dollhouse aired with a 7D shot. SNL (Well, I guess they are New York and not Hollywood :thumbsup used a 5D and 7D recently. Rodney uses the 5D and 7D on 24. Shane Hurlbut is using it on two of his next projects. That's just the stuff I can think of off the top of my flu-induced-cloudy-thinking head.

Till red comes out with an in-camera very compressed output the 7D and 5D are nice tools for many uses. Even if you own a FF35 Epic, a 7D or 5D would serve a nice purpose as an affordable second camera that can mimic the optical look. Directors digital view finder, scouting, and don't forget about web content. Now the 1D as a video camera has hardly any purpose at all... I haven't seen the super duper low noise that it might get at insane ISO but that seems to be the only reason to get it. Though if high ISO is all you care about there is Nikon also... anyhow, you guys know what's out there, just wanted to say that h.264 has it's uses. Comparing a vDSLR to anything from Red is like comparing dark chocolate dipped strawberries and twinkies.

Well for me, using a DSLR is way cheaper than film and enables me to do some really nice very high rez timelapse. I take about 360-400+ frames for every shot I do. For me to do this 10 years ago I would have had to bring out a 35mm motion picture camera and have it shoot the timelapse. I've seen a guy doing that down in LA when I first started shooting TL and I just laughed to myself. I had my tripod and a DSLR and he had an entire cart full of gear. Now with the 5D2 and its high ISO and low noise I get shots that I believe would be very hard to get on film.

Digital has its place and can enable you to do things you didn't think possible...for less money than film.

Yeah, I used to shoot a lot of film and it cost plenty. I had to be more selective about my shots and didn't see obvious mistakes until the film was developed.

With digital you can shoot more, see more and learn more faster. And fix mistakes right at your location. How much is that worth?

Yeah, Tom does do some amazing stuff with his 5D2. I've just started shooting in his realm of high ISO star timelapse and I have a lot to learn. I'm hoping to have another reel out here soon with some recent shots in it.

Digital does take some of the guess work out and you can learn much faster. Its a tool that can produce some amazing images if in the right hands.

I am amazed at my 5D2 but if RED can give me a camera with high ISO's like the 5D2 with very little noise then I'll use my RED for the majority of my work and have the 5D2 as a second camera. That's if it can keep up with Epic...as far as shooting timelapse.

Not to be antagonistic, but what would that prove? Films like Open Water were shot on standard def DV and got theatrical releases. Clearly these cameras are better in multiple ways than those cameras.

If I'm not mistaken almost all digital cable and directv/satellite HDTV is sent out at max 720p not 1080.

I took some time off from forums so I could use my free time polishing my talents and it's funny how even after taking a year+ off from these forums that the same old tired debates about my camera is bigger than yours and this tech is better than that still exist. Then I look at those who continue to make these bashing arguments and can't seem to find any quality footage shot by them. Now it all makes sense. It doesn't matter how "cool" of a camera you put in their hands the quality of the material will end up being the same.

I saw an eBay auction last week, about $100K of cinema lighting (Tungsten, HMI) for sale for a $30K Buy It Now price. It occured to me there's some kid out there who's going to spend his money on those lights, learn how to use them, and all of us (and our high-tech cameras purchased with second mortgage money) will eventually end up working for him one day soon. :bored:

As long as you are bringing it up, Why is it offensive to gays?

"Sucks" either by itself or with various nouns is often used as a negative and doesn't really discriminate toward orientation.

I agree that it doesn't make sense as "sucks" and the primary word from the acronym "FUBAR" etc have always had positive association with me. But then again maybe it is appropriate because if you ask me I have been uniformly very happy with my Canon purchases over the past 2 years. EOS40D, EOS500D, HG20, HFS100, EF-S17-55 2.8, 70-200L etc. Not a single problem. I tend to turn them over fairly quickly and while I accept some loss even there it hasn't been too bad. (sold the 40D for $650, 500D was $700 so cost $50 to upgrade to 20% more resolution and 720p with S35 DOF.)

I have also been very happy with my RED purchase, but I couldn't truthfully say "uniformly".

I don't really get the whole RED/Canon thing. Canon is selling these things as still cameras with some interesting video capability that is due to the large sensor - primarily shallow dof and exceptional tonal quality and sensitivity - with the known limitations of the compression and scaling techniques that were available with their current processors. Which works for a lot of people in a lot of situations - including me. If it doesn't work for you - grow up - Canon isn't going to abandon their 30 different camera models so they can concentrate on making and selling one model that YOU think does everything you want. I hate to break it to you but the Epic or Scarlet isn't going to either - and once RED has 10 camera models their development/marketing strategy will tend to get a lot more like Canon's than Canon's will get like RED's because that's the way it works when you go beyond one product.
