  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Yeah... some things never change I guess.. Surprises like this...

Jarred, we talked about this at NAB. Said you needed to see one. I acknowledged, and later reiterated (in a post two days ago) that we would send you one of the first. Nothing has changed since that NAB conversation - except the Birger PL mount has very recently graduated from a figment of my imagination to the product of it. Call if you feel we need to chat.

Hey Erik.. You said you had an idea and I asked you to send it to us first before you announced anything which you agreed to... in case there was something wrong with it I wouldn't look like the bad guy raining on everyones parade. The requirements of our original agreement have not been followed very well either, so this was just a shocker to me.

It sucks cause this is yet another really, really cool idea... and I am sure it will turn out fine.. but I just wish your business communications side was as good as your engineering side :)

ah phew.. i thought I read PL mountS were leaving his shop on monday to goto people.. glad i was just hallucinating :)

heh heh heh.

I think he said leaves the machine shop Monday (to go to him for testing and then to you) the picture was a plastic version from 3d printer to verify fit and such and to show us what it looks like and how it would fit, but the plastic is not suitable for testing.

I really like this as it makes it pretty easy to go from say a 10-22mm Canon being used in my underwater housing (Birger kills 2 birds with one stone. 1: gives us the 10mm ultrawide angle we need that isn't available in RPP and would be REALLY expensive as an ultraprime and 2: gives us easy electronic iris and focus control in the housing without the expense of gears/motors/extra power.)

Then allows us to take it out of the housing and easily switch to the pl mount for RPPs.) It just gives us the best of both worlds. To put it in perspective a Tokina 11-16 is $600 and canon 10-22 about $700. An ultraprime 10mm is about $20K. That money is better spent on a set of RPPs.

Hope it works out.

Hey Michael.. its all semantics.. the most important thing really is that its a good idea.... i have little doubt it will pass the test and be another tool in the customer's arsenal of flexibility.

I like the fact that the whole system just keeps getting better and better - with lots of options.

On another note, I will upgrade to Epic-X as soon as SN#206 is available (clues appreciated:). But I'm also really interested in 9K 645 (I think of it as true IMAX resolution) and have been discussing the possibility of partnering with another local RED owner with a much later SN# on trading his toward the 645. Any rough idea on how much longer after EpicX that we might see the 645?

This may be something of my fault Jarred... The PL mount kept getting shelved due to other issues in Eric's life, and then, in my selfish desier to get this into the DVD (which will not come out until OCT, LONG after you've tested it) I REALLY pushed Eric hard the last few days.

I know it was Eric's intention to send it to you before he released it, and from what I know this new part never even touches the RED camera, it simply sits on top of the approved mount, so it's kind of a no brainer anyhow.

I think the communication thing is not a matter of carelessness, but more a matter of a swamped new daddy triying to keep one product going while finding time to make a new one.

There is no doubt in my mind that when it comes to products like this one (Speaking of Eric's ablility to get his stuff to "talk" to canon lenese) he is the best in the business hands down, and he's dependable to boot. We're gonna have to start calling him the "lens whisperer".

We're going to really need Eric's ability for Epic (And Scarlet I guess) since so many of us will be depending on him to make our lenses work with all his wireless goodies!

How long does it take to change from Canon to PL and vice versa? Is this something that could be done in the field? I guess not, since the collamination is a semi-complex process.

The idea is one can adjust to pre-marked collimation settings. Four screws removes the outer mount (PL or Canon or upcoming Nikon). Slightly loosen the four screws holding the innner inner mount against the red body and turn the adjustment collar to your marked collimation points. Replace outer mount and voila. I'd say it takes less then 10 minutes. Whether in the field or pre-shoot is a decision best based on the specific variables. The biggest issue I can see is protecting the OLPF which is quite exposed for the duration of the assembly while changing mounts. Maybe Eric can figure out a clever way to make a "sub" lens cap.

Yesterday I had my Birger/Impero installed for the very first time. All I can say is wow. All the L Primes 14, 24, 35, 50, 85 and 16-35, 70-200 zooms work very well. Looked at the material on scratch projected @ 2k and again all I can say is wow. The canon lenses look even better on red then I had imagined. The 85 1.2 looks just incredible. While I'm not ultimately convinced about the quality of the Impero it worked very well. Focus was smooth and consistent. I went out to the street last night and could manage on a tripod while panning, zooming, etc. to hold the impero in my right hand and turn focus with my fingers and still be able to control the tripod arm!!

I have only canon primes, no zooms. how do i go about collimation?

Collimate your widest lens and the rest should work fine. As long as it focuses to infinity OK and your lens markings are close to right then you're fine. Focus at 3 feet should say 3 feet on the lens.

Since most Canon lenses go beyond infinity it's pretty easy.

I've had Birger/Impero beta units since November but have only been using the production units for a couple of weeks - solid as a rock.

Check it out with Canon 85 f1.2 @ f1.2

help

help

so i'm a week out from shooting a feature using the birger mount and the impero on my red. it has worked fine for a few months now until tonight's camera test.

nothing works.

i cannot sync to impero. i cannot control any lens from the mount. wired or wirelessly. i cannot connect via bluetooth from laptop (no bei device found. error #16-resource busy) i know the mount is getting power because the focus quickly racks when i switch between manual and auto. but the buttons on the side of the mount do nothing.

i've tried resetting camera, fresh batteries, checking s4i, gpi output and lens data prefs. resetting power to mount. (all of these things have worked at one time or another when little bugs arose).

the impero will not sync to mount and cannot be synced by holding down "i" button. it really seems like the mount has gone south.

any thing left to try?

Wow. Really does make me want to get an 85 L.
Really a perfect and highly effective closeup. Really captures his humanity. It sustained that long take too. Nice clip.

Craig:

Is the mount itself working? Try using the buttons on the mount itself to do a lens reset (focus should move from end to end) and then try to iris up and down with the buttons. If the mount itself isn't working check to see if you have any stuck pins on the mount (the ones that touch the contacts on the lens. Clean them and work them in and out to make sure they are loose enough to pop out when the lens is attached and make contact.

thanks michael.

the buttons on the mount don't do anything like they used to. unless there's some crazy button combo i need to reset it, i cannot get anything from the mount. and based upon how the lenses (nothing) and impero (not syncing) are behaving, it appears that the mount is dead.

but i will take a close look at those pins too.

Support

It sounds like something is broken. The phone number that we have on file for you appears to be out of date. Craig, I do not mean to single you out here, but your post just got me to the point of needing to say something.

I am a big proponent of community based support, as it helps take pressure off of smaller companies like mine, and often offers quicker answer (particularly late at night or on the weekends). But, there are a few common sense things many are overlooking:

First, when posting to the public forum for a help request, also submit a contact us form from the web site. This allows us to follow up with you.

Second, when posting that a problem has arisen, in the spirit of fairness, one should also post a follow up, when the issue is resolved - whether or not that resolution was reached with outside help. There are a few "what the hell, birger?" posts on this board from people that have received support phone calls from me personally, that have reported that they figured the problem out all on their own, that have not given the all-clear back to their peers.

PL mount - update

PL mount - update

Machine shop won't finish until today/tomorrow. The plater is doing a very complicated finish, that requires 2 days. I am out of the office friday through monday. I expect Jarred and the beta sites to receive first PL-mounts on Wednesday 30 September.
