Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Erik,

I'm posting this mostly on behalf of Kenji Hibi here in Japan who recently got his mount and Impero but can't get it to work. He brought it to me today and I can't get it to work either.

I have my own Birger mount/Impero combo and it works just fine and is seen by my MacBook's Bluetooth connection. All the firmware and builds are up to date on mine as of this post (BEI 1.1.7, Birger Library 20a and Impero 1.8) and I have set b18 3.6.4 lens data via Configure Device so it talks properly to the S4i pins. All is well and barring a bit of lens jumping on focus pulls and the Record Start/Stop only working intermittently (probably another firmware update needed to fix some outstanding bugs I guess) it's fine.

Now I have tried everything to get Kenji's mount to work but I cannot get the BEI software or ZTerm or anything to actually connect to the mount. The MacBook detects it and pairs it with the number (05278) but any attempt at actual connection results in nothing or timeouts. I've been through all the options to get it to recognise as suggested in this thread (and have my own working fine with these techniques) but Kenji's won't play. I even updated Kenji's Impero to v1.8 through my own mount just fine so that part's not the issue.

Since I can't get a connection to check which library is installed, or what bootloader version his mount is, I have no way to know if it is defective or just plain stubborn, but I've tried time and time again to get it to recognise using the BEI but it never shows up to let me update it.

Should Kenji send the mount back to you? Anyone here have any other suggestions as to what might be causing this?

Thanks,

Paul

I've got the exact same problem!! And i can't do anything, firmware upgrades etc. etc. without getting the mount and my mbp to connect!!!

Erik did email me with one possible fix, which is to take the two parts of the mount apart and clean the contacts that mate the two together (around 20 pins I think) with some alcohol. This is because the radio antenna portion and connectors live on the back half while the electronics are on the front half. If these two don't connect properly signals may not be transmitted properly.

Kenji has emailed back and said this didn't solve the issue for him, but it may be worth trying Yean.

Looking forward to hear from both Erik and yourself what the issues turn out to be for respective mounts.

Tried that Paul...doesn't work as well. I feel like burning the Birger mount and then killing myself.....

thanks anyways,

yean

Firmware Update Problems

Firmware Update Problems

I can get my Mac to see the Birger and I've successfully updated the firmware in the mount. When I try to update the Impero to 1.8, I get an error message that says the Impero is performing "unexpected behavior."

In the update PDF new batteries are recommended if the Impero can't be updated. I'll try that and post the results soon.

I have updated to 1.8 Impero sucessfully, but I have to stay it's still jerky on focus pulls. :-(

EDIT : actually if you're using a non-L lens such as the Canon 85MM 1.8, is practically unusable

EDIT 2 : Tried a few lenses out and focus doesnt work at all on the Canon 100M Macro

Still, my impero makes lots of nice beepy noises now :-)

Im still confident that erik will fix this, its probably something to do with mapping resolution between the controller and the lens

In my experience with 1.7:
16-35 II: sometimes jerky
50 1.2 II: perfect focus pulls
85 1.2 II: perfect focus pulls

Issues with Impero 1.8

Issues with Impero 1.8

I've upgraded to v1.8 on the Impero and now have a working wired connection, but now I'm having difficulty getting my Impero to pair with my mount wirelessly. Occasionally, it will do it (though not as fast as it used to), but most of the time the Sync LED just keeps flashing, sometimes accompanied by a series of low tones. Fresh batts, being close, and power cycling are not helping. It just seems to pair only when it wants to, that that is rarely. Anyone else having this trouble?

Most of my lenses seem to function fine with the wired connection, but my 17-55 does not like Impero 1.8. It was fine with 20a and 1.5, but now it is quite jumpy with 1.8.

Once updated the Birger mount to version 20a the problems with the older EF 70-200mm/f2.8 have seem to disappear. In the camera have build 20.

I still get dropped frames with the 70-200 L on Library 20a Impero/1.8 Camera build 20. If I turn off S4i data the problem goes away, so it must be related to the iData connection. I'd love to know if this is just a problem with the older 70-200s (mine is about 8 years old). If anyone has results with the newer IS version, I'd love to hear about it. Note: it usually takes 2 minutes or more of roll time before the dropping starts.

Andrew, the new model with IS works out fine. I'll check the older version once more. Perhaps did not test it properly.

Actually, we couldn't wait for the 25th. Anders came in at 10:06pm last night. Weighing in at 8lb 4oz, he and his mother Amy are both healthy.
