Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Just got my Birger and Impero and like what Alexander said. Things can get quite confusing without a step-by-step. You got to search several different threads to find out how to set up and use the mount with the Impero.

I still haven't upgraded the Impero to v1.5 firmware cuz i've only ever managed to get the mount to communicate with my laptop once the last two days. And that was only enough time to upgrade to library 20a.

Also, when i calibrate the iris, the Impero doesn't tell me when it's done ie. beep. And also, the iris doesn't open and close like in Jay's video. So what i do is just hold down the Cal button for about 10s and cross my fingers. Most times, it works.

Tried a variety of lens on it. And the Canon 70-200 is the only one with "jumpy" focus. Could be fixed with the Impero upgrade.....if and when the mount starts connecting with my laptop!

Yean, as you got your Impero only yesterday, it has the latest firmware. No need to update it, at least that's my understanding.

Also, when i calibrate the iris, the Impero doesn't tell me when it's done ie. beep. And also, the iris doesn't open and close like in Jay's video.

If I've got it right, this part of jay's video is outdated. Instead follow this instruction:

Big change in behavior is independent axis calibration. "CAL" button only does the active axis (i.e. "F" or "I") and returns the lens to the same position as the knob. If you need to reset the zero position on the knob, push "FN" + "CAL".

That is, once you have the mount and knob in sync, active button "I". Then push "FN" + "CAL" and this position of the knob is now the same as the iris on the camera. Rotate the knob to see the iris changes. Now, active button "F" and push "FN" + "CAL" and this position of the knob matches with current focus reading on the camera. Rotate and focus changes.

If you thereafter active "I" again and push only "CAL", iris goes to the setting that corresponds with the current position of your knob.

Here’s my contribution to making this thread the longest in the history of internet!

I have searched this thread, and others, like Sherlock Holmes but do still feel I have to get this straightened out:

I’m planning to use my just arrived Birger Canon mount on my incoming Red One, manually at first, and then in the future with an Impero.

Q1. If I put the mount on the Red One NOT connecting the i-data cable from the R1 to the mount, the Red warranty is NOT violated, right?

Q2. If I put the mount on the Red One CONNECTING the i-data cable from the R1 to the mount, the Red warranty IS violated, right?

Q3. What papers, and from who, do I need before I can start the PL/Birger mount shift procedure, if I do NOT want to violate any Red warranty?

Q4. If I do NOT connect the i-data cable to the mount (only the power cable) I can still adjust focus manually by the lens ring AND by the push buttons? AND also adjust the aperture with the push buttons, right?

Anyone out there absolutely sure about these things?

Thanks!

As I was afraid of; no one out there knows for sure...

Or? Know it's basic, but advise would be really helpfull!

Q1. If I put the mount on the Red One NOT connecting the i-data cable from the R1 to the mount, the Red warranty is NOT violated, right?

You must have approval from Birger in writing who in turn will notify RED that the camera has had a Birger mount installed. Fulfilling these requirements will maintain the original warranty and upgrade path.

Q2. If I put the mount on the Red One CONNECTING the i-data cable from the R1 to the mount, the Red warranty IS violated, right?

Same as above, to my knowledge installing with or without I-data will maintain warranty.

Q3. What papers, and from who, do I need before I can start the PL/Birger mount shift procedure, if I do NOT want to violate any Red warranty?

See above.

Q4. If I do NOT connect the i-data cable to the mount (only the power cable) I can still adjust focus manually by the lens ring AND by the push buttons? AND also adjust the aperture with the push buttons, right?

Yes you can adjust iris through the push buttons. Focus can be controlled either manually on the lens, via laptop with bluetooth connection or you can also use a Birger/Viewfactor wireless remote follow focus.

Good roundup, Noel, but I'm not so sure about your answer to Q2. Please have a look at post #5757 from Jarred:

"The Birger mount we approved is based on that trouble-capable ipin connector being tucked away safely inside with no electrical connection, so of course if these new mounts that are plugged into the i-pin cable, if they blow something up your on your own (obviously)"

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for pointing out this important detail. I do believe this still means that the warranty and upgrade is not voided if you install the I-pin as it would be, for instance, if you install the PS-Technic mount. What it does mean is that RED is not liable for any damage caused by such an installation. In actual fact I believe the same applies regardless of whether the I-pin is installed and any damage whatsoever caused by installing the Birger is not covered by the RED warranty.

What really is important is that the global RED warranty/upgrade offer remains valid.

best,

noel

David have you not had the Audio upgrade done yet? You gotta get your camera in soon, as the upgrade program is ending soon....

I am still waiting myself. I emailed Brian tihs AM, so hopefully I will have an update next week on when I can send in my camera.

I can’t find the post about the /i metadata showing the distance as a 100m or 989’ instead of the actual distance set on the lenses. I am on RED firmware v.17
Anybody knows how to fix this problem?

Andrew

Many thanks for your advise, Noel and Oliver!

I try to get in contact with Birger but it’s impossible to reach them via e-mail. No respond at all. Probably on vacation – or just too busy shipping mounts and Imperos?

Meanwhile, if I don’t get the required papers in time, I’ll record my mount shifting on video(!) just in case a warranty discussion occurs later on...

Just too bad you can’t get your RED 1 with RED-factory installed mounts, for whatever lenses you are planing to use! That would be really nice – and a pleasant dead of the warranty discussion...

This may have been covered in the thread but I'm having this iPin readout problem:
I have two cameras. #2819 and #2820. I have installed Birger mounts on both cameras. on the #2820 I have the data read out on my LCD but my #2819 simply refuses to display any lens data. I swapped the mounts to no avail. Still the #2820 reads out and the #2819 does not. I started suspecting that RED had sent me one camera without the audio i/pin upgrade and one with, since I received them right around the times that they started to ship the updated R1's. But Brent from RED assured me that I have two upgraded R1's since they shipped out in September 08.

That kind of makes me wonder....what the H...! What can be wrong with my #2819? does anyone else have these probs?

I'm on Build 17 and mount lib. 19x with both cams.

EDIT: mounts serials: 04960 and 05013. I even bought a new mount from Eric because my 04960 crapped out on me but that made no difference with regards to lens data.

You've probably already checked it, but make sure your camera settings are set to receive the i-pin data. I can't recall the build17 menu for that item, other than it was nested somewhere in the system menu.

If that's not the problem, try reinstalling the firmware on the camera.

If nothing else works, maybe your camera has a faulty i-pin connection? In which case maybe Red can diagnose and repair the problem?

Did you pull hard on the i/data cable when you were taking out the PL mount rings?
As far as I remember this i/data cable is terminated with the same connector on the system boar inside. Maybe it just came out a bit from the connector on the other side of it.

Hi Alexander,

Here's what i did.

Power up both the mount and your mac. And then go to setup Bluetooth device on the mac.

Your mac should detect the Birger mount. It should be come out as Birger XXXXX (serial number).

Under Passkey options, check the DO NOT USE PASSSKEY WITH THIS DEVICE option.

Continue to the end and your mount should be connected with your mac.

It is a little buggy though. I've only managed to do it once.

Once connected, start up the BEI interface software and upgrade.

Thank you Yean!
Here's where I get stuck: I'm able to establish the connection to my mac via bluetooth (going through settings, unchecking use passkey, etc.)
after i establish connection, i launch the birger application and click find BEI device. It finds my Birger but then prompts for the passkey again?

any ideas?
thank u

well...i got it working first time...and haven't been able to since...hope you got better luck!!

right now, i can't even get my impero and birger to sync!!!

Hi Lauri,

How can i find out if my Impero is on v1.5?

And now when i get sync with the mount. The sync led on the Impero doesn't light up!!
