  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Deanan, any news on Specs ? Sorry, I know you cant hear this question anymore....

thx

Encoding also goes faster because the CPU is not fighting for resources with the debayer/decoding.

I'm using the term 'encoding' rather than transcoding because transcoding generally means decode->process->encode and with RED Rocket™™™ the decode and process (debayer and color processing) happen on the card, leaving only the encode on the CPU.

That's where I got confused, although now it's clear to me how this will work.

I originally thought it meant the entire transcoding process took place on the card itself.

Has anyone used the new Matrox H.264 card? it seems like it would be a good pairing, a redrocket card and a h.264 card.

You mean the new CompressHD card? I have one in my system.. and normal Quicktime software H.264 encoding on my mac is actually faster than using the CompressHD card...

I am using it in the fastest mac pro available though, with alot of CPU horsepower.. I imagine the CompressHD card may actually help things if you are using an older system on its last legs.

We're putting together the final spec sheet but as you know nothing stands still around here so it's a moving target.

What specs are you interested in?

is it possible the encoding piece could be gpu accelerated too instead of CPU

If the encoder using it does, yes. Meaning someone who has a gpu based encoder can use the SDK to accelerate the decode/debayer and pass that to the GPU.

I am interested in specs from slightly older dual core Xeon MacPro's and older 8 core intel MacPro's specifically.
I would love to know if its a waist to put a REDROCKET card in a machine like that or if it will still perform realtime playback of 4k and 1080p scaled.

Here are some specific specs, worst case scenario,

2x 2.66GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon, 4 Gigs RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, Internal 3.0TB RAID 0 Config.
This is my slowest Mac Machine.

So what is the solution for power on Mac Pro systems where both aux power connectors are already used? Has this been determined yet?

Sound like the cable won't be needed now. This is from the previous page.

We're in the process of liberating the external power so it's not needed. This will make things much easier especially on macpros were external 12v power is limited.

Cool, I missed that little bit about eliminating the power.

It won't be a waste on older machines. The cool part is that it'll breathe new life into the older machines :)

I'll see if we can find a similar machine to test.

What will be realtime if I change settings in RSX file. So all changes can be done and exported in realtime from 4k to HD?

Hi

I'd like to make a small plea for a way, soon, to render out uncompressed Avid 10bit quicktimes.... The Rocket is going to be fantastic for editorial but we, avid users, still need to stop struggling with the 185x DNxHD limit. If the rocket with the new Redtools can help here I will be double delighted!!

regards
