Hello

I have an old DVD recorder with FireWire input. I could connect a video camera to it and record on dvds.. wonder if i can use Red's firewire as a video output onto it during a shoot? to see the takes after they are shot?

Or connecting the RED's firewire output to a small MiniDV camera and recording with it to see the takes quickly?

(not to see the focus, just to see the acting again)

George

I have not heard of any plans to put a DV codec in the red camera, but who knows what may be possible.

hmm.. sarcasm eh?

This reminds me an old man in Japan back in 1991 on a trip i took with a friend.. he said to recognize true genius: "you'll recognize a great mind by the one who isn't showing off". God bless the humble few.

Very nice. Well done cinemano.

You could record a viewing monitor output for playback.

You must just not be familiar with my sense of humor... :)

oops sorry then. I know what you mean. I know a Producer friend here who somehow has a sort of sarcasm sense of humor to people he likes, but those who don't know him get offended.. hehe.. no harm done brook.
Its tough to detect on written form though.

We're you referring to the firewire port on the Red Drive?
This is data only to mount the drive on a computer.

Why???
you can review the shots in camera.. it makes ZERO sense to bring it to an external source for take review

I wouldn't go that far. Most sets have an external playback operator to deal with such things for the director/client/etc. while the camera team moves on.

On a small/low budget set, I agree with you... but on a larger set, a playback operator is essential.

It would be nice if there was some way to build a low-cost HD clamshell for external playback on lower budget sets. As it stands, one would need a normal SD clamshell [or mini DV deck, as the case may be] to couple with a downcoverter of sorts [which will likely be in the $2,000 price range].

Most HD playback guys I've worked with have a Mac hooked to an AJA ioHD and record with FCP. It may not be designed for that purpose, but I've been told it's far less buggy than the HD Raptor.

I like to have quick rewind and replay access to my takes and to bring them home in a cheap tape.. yet still have high-def in the can for later..

I think rushes on Mini DV is not too bad an idea as most people have access to play them back, DVD is good too but not real time to create.

Most of the time the director just wants the most convenient way have a look at the performances, I don't think HD is so important in this case.

One would hope they have faith in the DP that the image side of things is being taken care of.

The down converter should work, wireless video assist is nice too. I used a archos on a film but it didn't really work and I didn't have enough prep time to fiddle and get the work-flo working 100%.

In any case its nice to keep the director happy with something they can take home at the end of the day.

And they tend to leave the set at wrap to prepare for the next day, so real time is a must.

On set with the drama series we've been working with, they had two Panasonic 160GB DVD Recorders. They recorded Composite from the down converter. The recording to hard drive was realtime and easy for playback, and DVDs of the footage could be recorded in the background.

No reason that wouldn't work with downconverted output from the RED also... But you need a down converter, of course.

I think that's pretty much the setup I saw on set last week. 3 camera shoot. Wireless stream from main camera. FCpro plus mini-DV tape backup recorded at the same time. 3 monitors in video-village, 1 x HD for 720p playback, plus 2 x SD.... then another SD tap outside the "tent" for the DOP or others to check.

touche' Totally agree with large productions.. i didnt read into his post. I was thought he meant just as a quick reference. wasnt thinkin big budget:tongue:

I think Adobe OnLocation would be ideal for this kind of quick rewind and replay of takes, when fed with the appropriate video signals through firewire. Another solution could be using the Blackmagic Intensity card's HDMI inputs and the software that comes with it.

What I want is a GV-HD700 but with SXS ability rather than tape and HD-SDI in.

Have done shoots using the AJA HD10MD3 and a GVD-1000 as firewire router into FCP or the PYRO AV link.

Have tested the Panasonic HPM110 and that worked very well and would be my first choice if budget wasn't an issue.
