P+S Technik IMS Interchangeable Mount System report 1.

Yesterday evening Friday, March 28, I'm back in Vienna from visiting P + S Technik Headquarters in Ottobrunn and München. There I met with Alfred Piffl, Managing Director at P + S Technik and Andreas Dasser, head of
Development department at P + S Technik. They are really very nice, friendly and the camera technology knowledgeable guys. They were delighted and happy that I brought them RED that they could finally see closer in details about a possibility to make IMS (Interchangeable Mount System) to RED camera. Also not forget to congratulate to P+S Technik GmbH on the recently received (on February 9, 2008) Academy Award for scientific and technical achievements:

"To Sebastian Cramer, for the invention and general design and Andreas Dasser, head of development at P+S Technik GmbH, for the mechanical design of the Skater Dolly and its family of products.
This small, portable, camera-only dolly allows low lens positions, movement in restricted places and tight offset circular maneuvers with rapid set-up."

P+S Technik is the world's well known and top noch German professional cine equipment manufacture that could tomorrow maybe work as a third party for the extensions of RED PL mount and also on many other RED camera accessories.

What they said about a possibility of IMS on RED?

They said CLEAR it is possible.

First they thought a couple a months ago it could be maybe even simplier and easier solution.

After a proper look in RED camera at the end of last week they think that installation of IMS can be done successfully BUT ONLY in one of the P+S Technik's certified services like this in Ottobrunn near München or as a ZGC in New Jersey, NJ, USA and similar one partner in another part of the world by trained P+S Technik technicians.

What does it mean?

No any possibility of easy and simple RED user installation of IMS on RED.

Why?

Here below there were the two main things that could pay REDuser attention.

It is about a technical requirement for removing the front part of RED camera together with existing RED PL mount that cannot be done by an ordinary RED user.

1. Collimation

Only P+S Technik with a special collimator can adjust the exact flange distance between the IMS mechanical mount surface and the RED image sensor (Mysterium).

2. A warranty risk decision

Another issue is that removing of this front part would probably cause the end of RED warranty(!?)

or after that step no any more chance to avoid warranty problems.

That could be a part of REDuser's own risk to permit this intervention until maybe one day RED and P+S Technik decide together in a positive way or simply towards the RED users benefit.

So in about two weeks I will make (my) "risky" decision and ask P+S Technik to make one IMS on my RED.

I think that TODAY without (my) risk of RED warranty , TOMORROW's success of the IMS on RED cannot be achieved.

Hope that one day in a near future RED will change the warranty issue towards RED users benefit with an officially permission of the IMS mount installation by P+S Technik GmbH.

Also hope that the officials of P+S Technik and RED could finally meet at NAB and have a talk about the best solution for all of us, the RED users.

whoever camera is in the second photo all opened up, your brave.

Probably it was my RED.

In between their looking in my RED (brought it on Thursday and picked up on Friday) I was with my girlfriend in München having fun visiting for example Mark Rothko's Retrospective exhibition at the Kunsthalle München, eating a steak at the famous restaurant "Brenner Grill", drinking a beer at Viktualienmarkt around Isator, etc.

Thanks for the effort Sanjin.

So, did you do it and ordered the mount-exchange?

what special collimator are they talking about.

Andreas showed me one but I don't remember the brand. It could be also their custom made collimator.

Yes I said that I would like to have it.

But no any sort of official order, it's a development process.

I should get an answer in about two weeks.

excellent - i think we will join you very soon with one of the cams here (once we have a free one).

Sanjin,

Price? We need to know.

Thanks for the effort!

Does it mean that you will NOT be able to use the Birger mount any more ??

what special collimator are they talking about.

Hi Steve,

It might be a dark field type of collimator as they provide a better bounce back of of cmos chips than do standard white light types like the Richter model. I think Nikon makes, or at least use to, one of those type units.

cheers,

Does it mean that you will NOT be able to use the Birger mount any more ??

we have to speculate, but probably yes.
Or, PS builts a mount for the birgermount :)

Looks like someone took their RED apart (from the pictures). Can we see those pictures somewhere?

I do have the Birger Canon EF mount in order. P+S Technik people know about what Erik Birger is doing and they have this option in their consideration.

Because there are a lot of technical details still unknown about the Birger mount and it should get more clear situation after the NAB show.

we have to speculate, but probably yes.

P+S could easily make an adaptation to the Birger mounts on exhisting PL, Canon EF or Nikon F adapter. They need of course more technical details about the Birgers.

Tlorenzo you're acting here as a sort of "cop" or even you asked question like a "cop".

Here there are nobody you could call "someone" in a way.

There are the people from P+S Technik that took those pictures.

And also those pictures are "owned" by P+S Technik Development Department and I'm sure nobody can see it except them.

To explain you that this is a part of P+S Technik developmet process if you could accept it and understand somehow.

Please no any more funny observations and questions like this.

Does it mean that you will NOT be able to use the Birger mount any more?
I'd ask this question only after Birger will be made available to users (if it will be... some doubt about this long talked about product.)

Also it would be interesting to mention that

P+S Technik's IMS Interchangeable Mount System

already exists for 2K (SI 2K cameras)

and it means that upcoming

SCARLET 2K new RED camera

could also benefit from that universal mount.
