  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

ha ha ha... no ouch intended.. just reality. The Birger i-data reporting is a hack, everyone knows that... just like the actual mount is somewhat a hack... a wonderful, great, ass-saving hack.

The Birger mount we approved is based on that trouble-capable ipin connector being tucked away safely inside with no electrical connection, so of course if these new mounts that are plugged into the i-pin cable, if they blow something up your on your own (obviously)

Dont panic though.. Erik is pretty smart on protecting things.. we havn't had any problems that I know of come in because of the i-pin mounts hooked up..

Cant really answer that one Karl.. the mount today is much different than the mount we approved... kinda puts everyone in a grey area.. specially since all these changes happened without any sort of notice or visibility to RED.

Jarred:

As a manufacturer, I appreciate the liability and development issues. But I also hope that as you prioritize you will consider that the ratio of birger/ef translated i/data users to "real" cooke lens i/data users (i.e. cooke lenses, not RED 18-50) is very high - I wouldn't be surprised if it were 25 to 1. I also know there may be some legal issues with being "officially" Canon/Birger compatible - I'm just suggesting that you do everything you can to be "Birger friendly".

As you say, Birger is ".. a wonderful, great, ass-saving hack." I have underwater customers that will use EF lenses for their underwater even though they are getting RPPs for their regular work - it gives us great wide angle glass (10 and 11mm) and allows easy access to iris and focus without cumbersome gears. And more important, they can easily switch to a physically much longer macro lens with no gearing issues. It is really helpful to see the distance and iris info on the viewfinder since we can't easily see it on the lens in the housing.

One of these days we'll get you over to Stuart Cove's and drag you underwater to shoot the dolphins and sharks and you'll be a convert for life!

BTW Thanks for making a great f-in camera and making it even better with the new color science.

Build 20 and Library 19z working

I just loaded 19z and it works fine with build 20. I have iData, record and all lens controls. Build 20 is amazing by the way.

And yet another round of roller-coasting. Luckily, we Birger veterans* are used to that now. Am sure that Erik and Jarred will work it out in the end.

(And my dumb Birger mount is in Norway, hopefully out for delivery tomorrow. Please, FedEx... Took 3 days from the States to Norway, now it's been stuck in Gardermoen for the last 60 hours...)

Sorry, I forgot, and search is not my friend tonight: Who has to inform Red of the Birger installation - is it the owner, or is it Birger engineering?

Thanks.

I thought the agreement that Birger has customers sign is also the notification to RED?

The latest warranty grey area takes some of the fun out of my RED ownership. But I completely understand the need to have every detail spelled out with these things.

If the mount/system had not been as amazing as it is I would have jumped off the Birger ship long ago. It's my belief that what Erik has done now could very well be where the future of high end cinema lens technology is headed.

Hey Michael.. don't worry im on your guys side :) That is why I let the Birger slide through the warranty restrictions in the first place..

That said.. when Birger changed the mount to start hooking things up internally to our camera that nobody agreed to, I would think it would of been courteous if we were told about it, specially given our lenience to the whole situation, but that is ok. Communication between RED and Birger just never seems to be the way it should , but I just chalk it up to Erik being an engineer (and a damn good one)... and for some reason Engineers just work differently sometimes..

The important thing is that he is making a product that helps alot of you guys out so I am ok with the way things being done seem a little odd to me from time to time.

As for prioritizing the Birger over the Cooke.. The protocol belongs to Cooke so it would be pretty uncourteous of us to not solve the Cooke S4 issue first :)

Hello,

I have been away from the forum for some time. Could any one tell me any updates on the Impero? What happened to all those units that Birger got from Kurt.

Are we still going to get the imperos any time soon? I am getting really impatient. :head_explode:

Thanks

Reminds me when we were shooting at a big Telecom. All the engineers were behind a huge glass wall.

They wanted it that way.

Strange creatures indeed, but thanks god for what they create for us :)

Just to clarify..

Just to clarify..

..when I wrote this I was referring to the long development time involved in bringing this system to market, not negating anything that both Birger and View Factor have done in any way.

Hey, believe it or not, as frustrating as it is to not hear anything for weeks I know that even if Erik or Curt did a daily update there a good chance it might be just "we're working on it".

Having said this, Amy just sent me an email saying they were preparing shipment of my Impero!

Hello,

I've been away for a while.
I'm a Nikon user.
I would like to know if Birger is still working on Nikon ? And if yes, will the mount be compatible with non-AFS lenses ??? And for an other friend, is Birger planning to do an alpha mount version ? And a K ( Pentax) mount version ?

Thanks

Yann

Looks like mine has arrived at Customs. Will post pics of the setup once I get it in the office and on a camera.

Cheers,

Paul

Upgraded mount + Imperio delivered by FedEx this morning ... will report more later once I'm back at base

Thank you Birger team for the quick turnaround

Cheers ...

got my impero and upgraded mount today!

quick question, are we supposed to connect the i-cable somewhere now or leave it loose?

EDIT : done it, sorry (took me a while to track down the install video - make it a sticky :-))

ok, i watched jays installation video but I can't get the impero to communicated with the mount. I've changed all the settings in the menus and directly connected the impero to the mount with the Lemo cable.

The mount lights up but there is no control and the 'cal' button doesnt seem to do anything

any suggestions?

EDIT: Info, running build 17 on RedOne and whatever the impero shipped with this morning :-/

You may already know all this, but if not try the following for connecting wireless.

Start with the camera on and booted and the Impero off. The turn the Impero on while holding down the I (iris) button. This tells it to search for the mount and connect via BlueTooth. After a second or two you should hear a beep (or a couple, I don't remember exactly) and then you can take your finger off the I button and wait for it to go through its startup.

After maybe a minute or so, it should stop flashing lights and hopefully settle with the F light on. If it isn't lit, hit the F button to make it come on. Then hit the middle button on the Birger so the Birger calibrates focus. When that is done, hit the Cal button on the Impero.
