ha ha ha... no ouch intended.. just reality. The Birger i-data reporting is a hack, everyone knows that... just like the actual mount is somewhat a hack... a wonderful, great, ass-saving hack.
The Birger mount we approved is based on that trouble-capable ipin connector being tucked away safely inside with no electrical connection, so of course if these new mounts that are plugged into the i-pin cable, if they blow something up your on your own (obviously)
Dont panic though.. Erik is pretty smart on protecting things.. we havn't had any problems that I know of come in because of the i-pin mounts hooked up..
Cant really answer that one Karl.. the mount today is much different than the mount we approved... kinda puts everyone in a grey area.. specially since all these changes happened without any sort of notice or visibility to RED.
Jarred:
As a manufacturer, I appreciate the liability and development issues. But I also hope that as you prioritize you will consider that the ratio of birger/ef translated i/data users to "real" cooke lens i/data users (i.e. cooke lenses, not RED 18-50) is very high - I wouldn't be surprised if it were 25 to 1. I also know there may be some legal issues with being "officially" Canon/Birger compatible - I'm just suggesting that you do everything you can to be "Birger friendly".
As you say, Birger is ".. a wonderful, great, ass-saving hack." I have underwater customers that will use EF lenses for their underwater even though they are getting RPPs for their regular work - it gives us great wide angle glass (10 and 11mm) and allows easy access to iris and focus without cumbersome gears. And more important, they can easily switch to a physically much longer macro lens with no gearing issues. It is really helpful to see the distance and iris info on the viewfinder since we can't easily see it on the lens in the housing.
One of these days we'll get you over to Stuart Cove's and drag you underwater to shoot the dolphins and sharks and you'll be a convert for life!
BTW Thanks for making a great f-in camera and making it even better with the new color science.
