  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

this is a severely misleading video. I hope someone explains to this guys what he's getting wrong
 
What a pile of steaming BS. He has no idea how a Bayer pattern sensor works because it certainly doesn't work as described. Maybe he should take a look at this I put up on CML: http://www.cinematography.net/natress-red-res.html which shows RED has a fantastic resolution, and negligible aliasing, and a great looking image on what is practically the ultimate camera torture test chart.

"RED hasn't done anything great - they just hired Hitachi to make a deceptive 4k-faker camera." this is of course, untrue, and the zone plate shot doesn't lie when it comes to resolution.

"RED ONE does not pixel shift. The bayer pattern means you're losing chroma resolution, but you still have full 4K Luma resolution. And I've yet to meet a single person who prefers DVCPro colors to REDCODE's colors, so the color res argument seems pretty moot.

Chroma gives you color, but luma gives you detail. RED ONE records 4K, no pixel shifting, no uprezzing.

Your explanations of the rolling shutter and raw data also seem ill informed.

Graeme could argue it the point more effectively in much greater detail, but I'll have to see how this guy response to those points.
 
It's seems there's a lot of BS flying around at the moment. Sony had a showcase for their new cameras in London yesterday and did a fair amount of muck spreading about RED. Apparently, we're all fanboys who know sod all, the camera is more expensive than is published, there have been quite a lot of badly shot jobs with the camera, the work flow sucks...

I wasn't there, one of my camera ops was though - I had to laugh, particularly since the F35 has gone up in price to £150,000 because of the weak pound:D

Forgive me ignorance but, What is exactly wrong with what he's saying? Is he factually wrong on any points? I want to get clarity on this

yes, he's wrong in that the camera does not pixel shift or uprez. Just because every other pixel in the RGB array is green, does not change the fact that the sensor is 4K wide and indeed recording a different luma level at every photo site, which is what gives the image detail.

And the downside to having an uneven number of green to red/blue pixels is that you'd get less accurate color, but as everyone will tell you, RED's color rendition is great. Far more appealing to me than the HPX300 comparison he offers.

While I feel the second half of his presentation is misleading, the first half is plain incorrect.

I love how his explanation for delivering in 2k ignores the possibility of grading 2k proxies and on-lining later or actually downsampling 4k footage. I'm guessing he isn't familiar with Nehalem's media-crunching power either.

"If you have the budget for 4k color grading, you have the budget to afford a better camera." :rofl:

What bothers me about the video is it really ignores a lot of the problems with the alternative cameras/systems he presents. Does anyone really prefer pushing your image through a 3 chip prism over shooting on PL glass?

The rolling shutter is not a big deal. I havent met anyone who really gives a crap. I've met even more people who dont even notice when I whip pan the camera and point at the verticals and scream LOOK! RIGHT THERE! LIKE JELLO!
