Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Birger is shipping! We received our mounts today, amazing build quality! It is worth the wait... Last week I posted to get it next week and ... here it is :)

Erik, thank you for that essential mount!

Has Erik given us any indication of when he'll be shipping the knobs and the wireless unit?

The EF 17-40 is a great lens, but I urge you guys to spend the extra $ and go for the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II, much better vignetting resistance at the wider angle and on RED also the extra 1mm at the wide angle might not seem important, but the way this second G. lens handles Flair, Vignetting, and CA + Breathing, will be important, but most of all the fact that the 17-40 F/4 will not give you the nice DOF that the 16-35 at F/2.8 can.

The EF 50mm F/1.2L is currently in its first generation NOT II, and it is also a fantastic lens, but not at par with the 85, said so the 50 1.2 remains and incredible lens and a great option in such a range.

ciao

I took your advice and just ordered the 16-35 f/2.8L II.

Now I am wondering about the 50mm 1.4 prime. I know the EF 50mm F/1.2L
is a superior lens but the difference in price is substantial. Any one using this lens
with the Birger mount? Does the 1.2 justify the difference in price?

Thanks

Interim knob solution

Interim knob solution

Hi all,

I don't pop my head in here much anymore, but I thought I might share some useful info. We have a couple of Birger mounts (industrial version) in our lab run by custom software. Recently, I had the brilliant idea to connect a Griffin Powermate to our computer and configure it to send the keyboard shortcuts for our focus controls. What a difference! Our software went from being an awkward hunt and peck affair to a powerful tool for our inspectors.

Does anyone have Eric's control software (Aquavideo)? Do the focus buttons have keyboard shortcuts? If so, you might find this solution works well for remote focusing (laptop still required) until Eric ships his knob.

So simple, yet so genius! Thanks for sharing! If the software doesn't have keyboard shortcuts, it would be a fairly simple thing to add, right?

Another update!

Another update!

Shame on me. I relayed the previous message from Erik to not call and bug him, and then today I go and do exactly that. I guess my curiosity about the USB knob got the best of me. :usd:

It turns out that he already has three of them in the shop. They will indeed work with the new software which is soon to be released. Erik also said that these ~$35 Griffin knobs will be key in making the collimation process much easier.

Meanwhile, he said the Birger knobs are coming along and that the first ten knobs are going to ship in the near future. After that, he expects to start shipping knobs in quantity.

Again, he said things have been going very smoothly with the mounts and asks that we be patient. More continue to roll out every day.

I know what Erik's next week sounds like, I know what tomorrow sounds like... and.. i gotta say that.. in the "Near Future" is something I haven't heard of before... .. .. .. ..

Hmmmm................ ....... Hmmm..... hmm..

one more...

hmm...

You can really get worried if the wording changes to the "not too distant future."

"Free Birger knob with purchase of Hoverboard!"

Now, I may have no right to complain, having gotten my mount well ahead of others who ordered before me, but I haven't been able to adjust aperture on any of my lenses (including a couple that have been confirmed to work by Alexander Christ). It will do the focus calibration thing, just no aperture control. I emailed Birger about it a week ago but haven't heard back yet. Erik and Amy, if you're reading this, I know you're swamped but please let me know to proceed.

Akabaka, are you simultaneously pushing both the to and bottom buttons just after you mount the lens? This opens the lens up and then you can with one or the other button stop down the the desired f stop.

You may already be doing this but it took me a little while to figure out why I was not able to get aperture control until I realized the need for the top and bottom simultaneous button push.

Ditto. Some lenses seem to work when you put them on and other require both top and bottom buttons to be held down at the same time (which pops the aperture wide open). From there you get control.

Oh, snap! Yep, that did the trick. Was this instruction written down somewhere and I missed it? Thank you, sir!

I am officially blown!

I am officially blown!

Holy crap,

I just got an utterly unexpected shipping notice from the nice folks at FedEx, suggesting that I shall be getting a little package from Birger Engineering in about a week's time.

I am simply wowed.

Erik is really, furiously, seriously, definitely catching up. I'll take back most of my :angry03: remarks.

Hopefully soon I'll get to shoot&share some Contax footage.

Anyone want to trade a nice Pentax K10D camera for a Canon camera?

I got a shipping notice also!!!! Great Googaly Gamoogaly!!!!! Miracles do happen.
