  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Aqua, what cause can we take up after Erik gets all his mount delivered? I don't know about you, but I think it's time to make my movie.

Well, there's world peace but I think the Miss Americas are on it, so I guess you're right. Now if I could just remember where I put that 5 million...

I think we're all aware that the vast bulk of any delays lay in Birger's court. But if quality requires delays then that's what's going to happen. Let's just move forward!
Well said. Still waiting Amy's email anyway... (November's reservation!)

The installation was very simple. The I-Cable is easily folded, slid into the Birger supplied tube and tucked into an ample well on the back of the Birger mount. I suggest getting a feel for the way the cable rests in there by putting the mount on and off a few times. I think if you watch what you're doing there's very little potential of pinching it. However, I am a little concerned about putting Red's PL mount back on. The channel for the I-Cable is very tight and since you loose sight of it as the mount comes into contact with the camera, I think the potential for pinching is a lot greater. Not really a problem if you are REALLY careful. But good to be aware of. Erik's photo shows you how to fold the cable and slide it into the supplied tube but I did feel better about making a slight change in the procedure. The open well (or channel) on the back of the Birger mount is so ample I was able to put the I-Cable connector into the tube. Looking at the connector, there are some contacts on it that look like they could possilbly short against the metal interior if allowed to just dangle around the opening on the body where the cable originates from. The back focus is also very easy but it requires removing the mount each time you make an adjustment. It may take five to ten remove/adjust/install cycles to get it on the money. The electronics work perfectly. Three buttons on the side. Press top and bottom buttons and the lens goes full aperture. Top and bottom buttons pressed alone are iris up or down by half a stop. I only had about 2 hours today to install it and I'll be checking functions and how back focus holds on all my zooms. The back focus adjustment I did today was to a 16-35 2.8 II. More tomorrow. At this point I am thrilled. But when I get the knob there will just be no living with me.

Would be possible to make a PL to Canon adapter so if we won't have to go back to PL mount we don't have to uninstall the Birger. I think this have been discussed before but with 2872 post I'm going to be searching.

That would be a great add to the birger, but maybe that's sci fi

I know Erik said that they won't be doing this, but there's no reason that it wouldn't be possible to make either an adapter that just snaps into the EF mount (male EF/female PL) or one where you would unscrew the EF portion of the Birger mount and attach a PL mount in its place. PL and EF have the same internal diameter, so unless the electronics on the Birger base mount get in the way, it should work fine. I'm definitely going to try to figure something out if I ever actually get my Birger mount.

Any word on how the MAC software is coming. Expecting mount shortly and the thought of dealing with the Microsoft world is causing anxiety!

We are finalizing the last details in the PC application. THere were some minor things that we wanted to change to make it more robust and cleaner. I expect the build in the next day or two to be the final one for now.

The next build after that will be adding support Microsoft Mobile / PocketPC. I have been told this is "easy", as it is simply a relayout of the GUI for a 240x320 screen, and a recompile. So I expect to have a version of this out next week.

Now that the PC app is nearly final, we can use it as the prototype for the MAC app. I have been told this is "not too difficult". But given that not much of the code can be recycled, as the application is about 99% comms and GUI (very OS dependent stuff), I will not give an estimate for the date until next week.

The MAC app has been started, is the only status I can offer right now.

Well, we can always find a PC to use for collimation if need be. I'd rather you focus on getting those mounts and knobs out the door. Were you still planning on fulfilling all pre-orders by the end of this month, or did I dream that?

It's not just the internal diameter you have to worry about. Every lens mount has a specific "flange focal distance", or distance between mount and sensor. The Canon EF is 44mm, and Arri PL is 52 mm. 8mm is not much to fit an adapter. You couldn't really nest the two either, since the OD of the PL mount is exactly the same as the ID or the EF mount, so again, there's no room for an adapter.

We'll have an update by tomorrow morning on shipping status with the current and next batch.

The engineer that is working on the applications, work on the mount, has been finished for a couple months now... The last build of the PC application was mostly to help with production and testing, as we also use it internally.

My next pst will be thursday morning. Amy will be in on thursday to catch up on emails.

I believe erik stated somewhere that the mount is not designed to take the weight of a pl lens. I could be wrong though. If you really want that kind of interchangeability, the best bet seems to be getting the birger and the IMS to play together which I know a lot of people want.

Thank you Eric...I understand the "not too difficult" issue. I think it's the engineering version of "fix it in post"

Hi Erik,
I e-mailed the message below desperate to get some/any response from you guys re order status. If someone at your end can deduct monies for orders immediately, why cant you/they at least post a reply e-mail to a simple question?

Hi,

I faxed in an order 26th June 08 and my MC has been debited for 20% deposit as per my instructions, but so far - no receipt confirmation and no time-stamped order number??? In short, no correspondence from Birger at all. Can you please advise what's going on???

thanks
joe
