  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

It seems to me, as I recall reading from someone's DSLR setup for "bullet-time" type images, that still lenses are not very standardized. In the specific sense that no two Canon EOS "50 mm" lenses are precisely the same focal length, so they had to crop each frame from each camera differently for them to match. I assume that focus throw might be similarly non-identical, although I guess they'd be individually calibrated anyway.

Is there an estimate of the number of people who've gotten their mount? I haven't seen mine and I'm wondering if we're looking at more delays?

jbeale - this little imperfections are to be expected and there are SW to deal with them. What I am looking for is simultaneous control of two "identical" lenses - so the focus happens at the same time and so does the zoom if needed... It will make Stereo (3D) a lot easier... :)

Another advantage would be the lack of need for mechanical lock-up between two lenses required for "normal" cine lenses. That means a lot lighter rig and much faster changes of setups for different lenses...

Peter, from what I understand, based on the protocol specs/SDK from Eric, it is possible for the lens/controller to "slip" so-to-speak, which could cause problems when trying to match two lenses exactly. Basically each lens is issues a series of steps on the motor to advance to reach a particular focus point. Turning the knob simply says, move forward 5 steps, or backwards 10. There is no guarantee that the 5 steps on two "identical lenses" will focus at exactly the same mark (but probably, could be very close). Also, the lens has to calibrate itself by ramping from near to far to determine the range of steps available to the lens. Again, of two "identical lenses" one could report 4000 steps, another could report 4100 steps. This would then complicate the coordination between two lenses, because the first would require an advance of 2000 steps to reach the middle of the lense, while the second would require 2050 steps. If you issued 2000 steps to both lenses, you could be off by 50 steps on the second, which could be a significant factor, magnified by your aperture/Depth of Field.

Eric, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

All very good & valid points...

But consider the alternative - how else would You be able to simultaneously control two Canon lenses on the Red One?

I am sure it won't be perfect, but I think it will do...
Also - it could be interesting challenge to solve. I am sure there is a workaround - maybe You could manually zoom/focus the two lenses to match visually the FOV/focus on both far ends (wide & tele) and lock these settings as the manual override in-out points - which the mounts are capable of...

I know Eric is busy and as such I would be happy even with s simple knob that could control two lenses without having to hard-wire one myself (which could be the last option with Erik's blessing of course). I could then tweak the control with the SDK myself...

Thanks for the feedback...

Peter :)

...whereas the rest of us would be happy with a simple knob, period. :ninja:

I guess to answer your question, using bluetooth, I see no reason why you couldn't having one application on a laptop or pocket-pc, communicate commands to both lenses simultaneously. Because the knob also communicates via bluetooth, in theory, this could be done as well, but I don't know the hardware/firmware limitations on the number of pairings the knob could support. Eric would have to answer that one.

.... In my case I would even be happy with a dumb mount. My camera is going to start shipping soon and I have plans to start a documentary mid late September. After all we've been through I don't want to sound pessimistic about this ... but this silence reminds me of some bad memories.

At least we have some discussions about Iphone, Nokias, and 3D imaging.... but still not tracking number.

I just had a bad morning...

come on Erik, please ship some mounts :gun:

Completely off-topic.

Such weird things you can find in you tube while waiting for your Red. After a search for "I can't wait any longer" I found this. LINK-->

It kept me laughing for a while. You just need to change KEITA word for BIRGER. And the dialogue makes sense.

I think I need to get out. I spent too much time in front of my computer and Birger thread today.

Tomorrow will be another Wednesday.

you guys have seen the twitter hitler video? super funny. I do love how we all are so loving and trusting and having a grand old time. Keep smiling.
