Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Lowkus, you are a patient man. Even without a lens I would have powered it up, gone through all the menus, learned as much as possible without actually being able to see an image.

Seriously, consider an alternative in the short term if you can. The images you'll capture we'll make it worth the inconvenience of waiting for the Birger. And when it does ship, you'll have some good experience under your belt with the camera.
People who know me have said I'm one of the most patient people on the planet, while others that know me say my patience is really just a form of extreme laziness. Birger did manage to break my patience at the end of June. I started looking into putting a T-Mount lens onto my camera as an interim solution (a somewhat hideous 500mm mirror lens), but I couldn't find a PL to T-Mount adapter.

akube,

what are the odds for 3000 posts before the warranty issue is resolved? I'd like to put down three sheep in favour of 3000. I'm good for it. (fedex ok?)

3rd Party Mounts - Warning
This is a tough one.. but we just got in a customers camera with a 3rd party mount yesterday ( Birger Canon Mount ) and improper mounting caused significant damage due to a short with one of the cables.

Erik has been tracking this issue, and this is the first camera we have actually physically received with the Birger mount (its actually the first time we have seen the latest design of the mount), so we are not sure of the severity of the problem. The Birger mount is a great concept and a necessary solution to some, so hopefully the issue can be resolved soon.

I just wanted to make sure everyone is aware of the warranty impacts that you may have when you start taking the camera apart. The camera warranty only covers mounts that do not involve taking off the adjustable back-focus ring.. if you go beyond that, the warranty is void, on any 3rd party product.

We love all the 3rd party developers.. they make bad-ass products that make our system better. And we don't want that to stop, we just need to make sure everyone is in the know. - Jarred

It has been 2 weeks now since this post by Jarred. Will Red or Birger please let us, your customers, know what is being done to get the Birger mount certified and shipped. I do not believe I am being disrespectful to Red or Birger by asking for this. We have invested over a year in the development of this product and many of us bought cameras that have not been in use because of not having this mount. We saw a working mount complete with remote focus knob at NAB two months ago. Birger has supposedly fixed the electrical problems. I would like to believe that there is a REAL PRIORITY being placed on this situation by both companies. We, your customers, must make a living with these cameras and given the long wait and series of delays, is it really unreasonable to ask for an update? Really now, is it further unreasonable to assume that if both companies really had a big priority placed on this we would have had answers by now? I don't think any of us, your customers, will be pleased if no real work has been done on this yet.

Man, that's why I went PL all the way and am waiting for my cake when the cannon mounts are available---not to mention i'm working regular....so, hopefully many others will be able to get out of the woods and possibly well how shall i say it..... guess there is no way to say it, but just move on with PL or nikon mounts and hope for the best down the road.
Hey....epic is on the way and is it not to far fetched to believe that this issue will still be unresolved?

Good luck to all awaiting the birger mount. Seems like an endless series of missed timelines. yes, completely understand that Red has possibly narrowed the door a bit, but all that should have been dealt with before announcing ship dates etc....

Thor,

with all due respect to all parties concerned, saying that you are continuing to work on something does not necessarily mean you are making it a very high priority and that action is happening now. Continuing to work with someone can easily mean it is part of an ongoing effort. Saying you are sure you will get there can easily mean you have confidence in the final outcome whenever that may be.

Thor, do you have a camera that is not usable because you have been waiting for this mount? If not you may not know the frustration and difficult circumstances this mount not shipping has had on many of us. If you ARE in this situation you must be a VERY patient man indeed.

I do not think it is unreasonable to ask for Red and or Birger to keep informed as to the progress of certifying this mount. After the more than a year of development, delay after delay, and now two weeks since the mount was essentially ready to ship, electrical problems solved . . . only waiting for Red and Birger to check it and sign off on it. What are we waiting for now?

Mark, I have a Red 18-50. So yes, I can shoot. But my shooting options are severely limited, especially for the type of work I do. I have spent thousands of dollars renting longer lenses. Thousands that come out of my pocket, not a client's, because the projects are my own. That's thousands I could have saved if the Birger had shipped when originally planned. I believe that qualifies me to be in the frustrated crowd.

Certainly, it is reasonable to expect updates... but how many should we expect before we are being unreasonable?

It takes time to make changes... ship product across the country... test the changes... make changes to the changes... and do it all over again. It just takes time.

Mark, I sense your absolute frustration, and I empathize. But it is our support and encouraging posts will motivate Erik to continue working on it through sleepless nights.

Thor,

Actually there may be no need for sleepless nights for Erik. Erik has already modified the electrical connection and all that needs to happen now is for Red and Birger to get together and sign off on it. Really, if Erik's change is OK, this thing could ship Monday if these two would just put a high priority on it.

Chopped is fine... I'm calculating the worth on driving to saudi to get the fuel. It doesn't look good (there's a big ocean in the way). Maybe i should check ebay.saudi and if there are any cheap deals there...

Okay, so where are we on this mount, today? Any possibility we'll see a resolution by the end of the month? (No, I'm not being sarcastic.)
