Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Little concerned about how my order went through with these guys cause although I jumped on the "reservation for free controller" opportunity, I have changed banks recently and therefore card numbers are different...what is the best way to contact BIRGER about orders? Sorry if this has been covered but have not found anything yet.

Oh and Jaadgy, Fantastic sill!

ohhhh ... therefore

ohhhh ... therefore

FFD for Canon FD is 42mm, it is 44 for EOS EF and EF-S and, as an example, Nikon is 46.5mm so it is easy to make a physical adapter for Nikon to EOS since you have 2.5 mm to work with.

OK ... so if I can get a Canon FD to Nikkon adapter I could use my Nikkor lenses on the Canon FD mount ;-) ... that's even better ... unless I've mis-understood :

  • manual Nikkor lens to EOS mount - 2.5mm to play with - ie: can mount Nikkor manual lenses on EOS bodies (as I do)
  • manual Nikkor lens to FD mount - 4.5mm to play with ... thus possible ;-) NICE

$20 fix while I await Birger ;-)

Cheers,

quote from cameraquest.com

"N Adapter to use Nikon F mount lenses

The N adapters are rare and much more expensive in the used market. For some reason Canon didn't much like the idea of using Nikon lenses on their cameras. The N adapter was first made in the early 60's, and then quickly discontinued. In the late 70's it was briefly brought back, and then discontinued again. These adapters are long discontinued, but still available on the used market."

Remember Canon switched to the EOS mount and EF lenses 20 years ago so finding an adapter to go from Nikkor to a 20 or 30 year old camera may be tough. The $20 adapters are for mass produced current adapters.

Seems like you should really push on RED to finish their nikon mount.

With the new reservation policy ("buy when you're ready"), I think RED will start getting more and more people who say "Thanks, but I might as well wait 'til I can use my lenses." Maybe that'll be enough impetus to really get things moving on the Nikon mount.

Nikkor lens to Canon FD mount adaptor ...

Nikkor lens to Canon FD mount adaptor ...

Hi Mike,

I cannot comment on the Cameraquest info. The dimensions speak for themselves, and I have just ordered a £10 adapter on eBay to allow using Nikkor glass on the FD mount (not a million miles from the type of adapter I use to mount manual Nikkor glass on my EOS bodies).

I've decided to go with the FD mount (while I await for the Birger) because :
- provides access to very competitively priced FD glass
- provides a Nikkor mount capability (to be confirmed as soon as I get the adapter)
- the FD mount is shimless (ie: adjustable) so I can play around with increasing the back focus and experiment with dome ports (avoid using a +ve diopter)
- a nice (relatively flexible) back up to the Birger mount should it develops a fault in the field

Unfortunately, to date I've not seen and ETA for the RED Nikkor mount, and also no comment from RED if it a shim or no shim arrangement (ie : a la RED PL mount).

In my view (and taking $ into account) the FD mount is a no brainer ;-)

Will keep you posted ... cheers

Let me know when you get it, somewhere I did a calculation for how much shim you would need to compensate for the dome (I think it was about 70 thousandths)

Bout time to get you a quote on a housing. Getting close to done on the first run of aluminums.

EDIT: Found it, I must have only searched Nikkor to FD. Here's one: 150131686340.

As far as I know those should work fine. I have a Contax to EOS that I use with my Zeiss Contax lenses on my 40D that works fine. this should be about the same - the only possible problem is backfocus if they aren't precise but you can adjust that anyway.

I'm thinking that people wanting to wait until they can use their Canon or Nikon lenses had a lot to do with RED's new policy. After all, there were a lot of people who made reservations based on the promise of using these lenses.

I'm confident that RED will have their "dumb" Nikon mount available before NAB, I'm hoping for early March.

Not sure about the Birger mount. Having their system out by NAB would be great, hope it happens. I'd like to see it at NAB before I actually buy it. I will probably only buy the Birger mount if mount swaps can be accomplished in a matter of minutes because I still need to use PL glass on my RED. The ability to use my Nikkor lenses would just be an added bonus.

Jarred posted about 10 days ago that work on the Nikon mount had resumed. No ETA, but I'll be shocked if it isn't shipping by NAB.

It is a no-shim mount with quick-adjust back focus. Essentially, it's the same as their PL mount, but it's for Nikon F. The new PL mount was the reason for delay of the Nikon mount, RED had to make the PL mount right first and then work on the others.

Hi Mike,

I purchased 150211823660, but the one you quote is the same thing.
Once I learned that the Canon FD mount can be adjusted, backfocus is not an issue.

Good news that your ALU housing is nearly there ! I'm in South Africa in April/May and Red Sea in Jun/Jul hence my HIGH INTEREST in sorting out some glass ASAP ;-) We've exchanged emails before ... send me some details / images / ...

I've not done any calc's for dome / lens shimming ...

Next challenge (if Birger does not come to the table in time) is to have something operational without having to re-factor the front-half of the housing :usd:
I was wondering if it was possible to have both a Birger AND a manual backup in the front section of the housing ??? Aperture & focus gear trains which would sit idle when using a Birger arrangement (since no gears would be on the lens) or stick some gears on lens and operate manually ... just thinking aloud ;-)

EDIT :
It is a no-shim mount with quick-adjust back focus.
Where is this information documented ???

Cheers

I just got an order confirmation from Birger..

Jay is a quick bugger...

Sales order confirmations went out to approximately 1/4 of the reservation holders just now. If your company name (or if no company name, your first name) begins with "A", "B", "C", or "D", you got an email. The rest should go out tomorrow. PLEASE DO NOT ASK "WHERE IS MINE?" UNTIL I POST THAT I HAVE EMAILED THE LETTER "Z".

On the feature front, how does class 1 bluetooth sound (100 meter range)? We are working to get it in there as we finalize everything this week.

CanonEF mounts with confirmation numbers 107.x should start shipping 22 February; 108.x the following week. 109.x the first week in March.

N.B. I have not read any other posts in the past week, I will get to them in a couple of days.

For those who asked: 107 is an order reseived November 2007, 108 December 2007 and 109 January 2008.

Sounds like overkill. Overkill will be just fine, thank you.

Damn, I knew I should have changed my name to Aaron and named my company Acme Pictures...

Great News, Erik, hopefully it will be smooth sailing from here on out!

BTW: were you able to figure out the Muli-part mount? Canon/PL (says with fingers crossed)

Hopefully some of your beta testers will start posting some footage soon!

Hi Erik,

Just one thing. I put an order in (in nov, I have the 107 No) for 2 FF wheels and 2 leads, thinking I might need two knobs to control both Iris and Focus.

If infact you only need 1 knob to do this, then could we find out before hand so we can ammend our orders before the ship date?

thanks

Got my confirmation # this afternoon.

Got my confirmation # this afternoon.

Erik, thanks this lifts some weight off my shoulders. Now that I know you've got my info. Thanks, again. I'm in the 108 batch. Does the one knob control both focus and aperture? or do I need 2 knobs?
