  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Could anyone tell me if red is working on a 65mm camera (and while we're at it what I would want in it)?

Fascinating stuff. From what I've seen so far, I am not happy with the image quality of the Sony A9 III. Having said that, I can say the same for the first two. It didn't get worse, but it didn't get much better IMHO. So many variables...
Here is the full well capacity of A9iii pixel and its read noise:
(You can check all still cameras on Bill Claff website: https://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_e.htm)

FWC is 37313 electrons. Now let's see another full frame sensor with the same number of pixels, Zf:

Its 82,262. So global shutter pixel of A9iii, which is state of the art in CMOS sensor tech, has FWC less than half of a conventional sensor (Tho at ISO 800 and above the difference is negligible for a sport camera, so most of the target users don't care). Its like having a 50MP sensor but only using half of them. So they have to use stronger OLPF. You can see the difference in contrast between the two in DPReview studio charts (both using a very sharp lens at its sharpest aperture):

BTW, Jack Hogan has a good article about why Nikon Z7 images "looks" so sharp without having crazy high resolution (spoiler: the fill factor is around 78%).
Bookmark his weblog, its a gold mine, trust me.
Since Z7 is mostly for landscape shooters, the more aliasing it shows is not a big deal. But if they wanted to use the same pixel architecture for cine camera, they would have had to use a very strong OLPF.

Thanks for sharing that. It makes a lot of sense, and now I can see a technical reason for why I don't like the image quality.

Fast Sensor readout > global shutter. Change my mind.

Pan on a tracked subject at 300mm.

But, I'll say fast sensor readout and global shutter are both "the way".

What do you think about DR (of the current cams)?:

Why is the monstro from 2017 "better" in the Xyla21 test? :D I think we both know that RED made some serious money and I feel like, they didn't reinvest into development enough.

Different CSF filter. Also, look at my Xyla tests as I do them a wee bit more um... correctly. Hell, wrote a document on it even.

Alright, now that I've thought about it, I think a raptor with a 10k dci sensor based on the x 8kvv pixel design would be best considering the low light capabilities of the vv with the global shutter, and data wise is probably most attainable with cfexpress type b cards. If they'd put that in a body the size of the regular raptor, we'd be at peak camera imo.

So nab is in a few months, anyone thinking they're going to do anything special there in regards to cameras?

Edith, we have a NAB 2025 Rumors & Wishlists thread that you can follow, let us know what you would hope to see! Here:

Would you want a 17:9 dci aspect ratio or something like 3:2?
