Nikon Z8: A More Compact Z9?

Saw this, Idk the Z9 had some terrible DR even recording RAW

Yeah,

I've found a few Z9 N-Log N-Raw files online. I found that the workflow I've seen posted online exacerbates the low Dynamic range of the camera. I believe N-Log only allows for 12 Stops of Dynamic Range which as you already stated isn't all that great. I found a N- Log IDT for ACES that along with other add ons , gives a much better rendition than the Rec709 workflow that's presented online.

Looking at some of the videos, if someone can't make this camera look good then there's something wrong with the operator. Even looking back at the CineD test for the Z9, the comments section just devolves into a numbers game but when you look at the actual footage, the Z9 and the Z8 look amazing compared to many of their competitors and most when you factor in that they're 8K. Also, lest we forget, there's been countless tests on RED and other pro cameras with their dynamic range claims and yet all of them come up shorter than their spec sheets say unless they are in the most absolute perfect conditions, otherwise they're just as all over the place as other cameras. Looking further, the Canon R5 and Fuji XH2 have noted dynamic range limitations and I've seen some harsh examples but, again, they're very capable when handled properly and the Nikon Z8 and Z9 not only have more dynamic range but also have 12-bit NRAW recording built in so, again, if that's unworkable for someone then they're going to be stuck waiting for the next generation of cameras time and again.

Actually having had time with the cam, I've seen much better performance with the A1, in both highlight and shadow. I would say it's the best performance I've seen in the mirrorless world.

I like the A1 as well but it was so odd that they left it as 4:2:0 in 8K for as long as they did, now that’s fixed, but the Z8/Z9 have NRAW so for that flexibility in-camera, I can’t consider the A1 for the price anymore when factoring in the external recorder aspect of it. Now, if Sony could add a RAW format in camera then that would be a very interesting situation, especially if it may make that highlight and shadow difference even greater.

That would be the Venice 2 haha
