  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Other services do deliver on Sunday, but they cost a lot more. I use Adcom Worldwide, but you have to do a lot of paperwork to get set up, so they can be sure you're not sending a bomb on a commercial plane.

Cool.

I am keen to get the system with free remote but I couldn't justify the purchase before learning more about how the system has developed.

The extension on the free remote is great. I think you will get many more orders if more info is posted on the units before the new deadline ends.

Faith is a great thing but does not have a place in the church of DPing

Will FourThirds cover 2k windowed? If so, the Olympus 7-14mm F4 could be a good solution for wide angle 2k.

erik, thank you for extending your deadline--i was slammed with work last week, this is great...

Don't forget the 20% deposit is fully refundable until 7 days before shipping, and you can specify a date that you DON'T want your unit to ship before ( I suppose that's for Red reservers not expecting their RED Ones until later next year). Info about the mount will come out before this deadline for refund if you specify a late enough shipping date.

Yes it will cover 2K, infact it should cover 3K and almost covers academy format 4K.

I like to root for the underdog. Seems like nobody is ordering FourThirds, but it could be a good choice for people who are planning to shoot lots of 2k. In addition to the 7-14mm F4, Olympus also make a 14-35mm and a 35-100mm, both F2.0. (While Canon and Nikon's fastest zooms are F2.8)

Very tempting,
thank you for mentionning these rare lenses but limited to 3K format

Olympus ED 14-35mm f2.0 SWD
Estimated Street Price: $2,299.99
will be available in the first quarter of 2008

Olympus 35-100mm f/2.0 ED
+/- $2100 is available now

Does anyone have experience with the 35-100 and can comment on performance, especially breathing?

I woke up this morning running a temperature of 101.1. Unfortunately that meant I couldn't fly to LA got LART. The unveiling of the product is going to happen a little differently than planned.

We have three prototypes that we will be sending out into the field this week. Right now all I can say is one is going to the DP of a popular national TV program that has already done some extensive test shots with Canon lenses; and one is going to Steve Gibby and Ken Corben. I will give further details, but all have agreed to give pblic feedback.

More photos and specifications will be released this week.

As the unveiling is not happening today, we have not yet processed all of the reservations, and some have suggested that a one week reservation period was just too short... I will extend the free remote offer until 11:59 PM EST Thursday 6 December.

Reservations have been about 70/30 Canon/Nikon so far. The overall demand has been high enough that we will do what we can to accelerate the release of the Nikon product. At this time we expect to deliver the first Nikon units in early February. We will delay the FourThirds mount until after the Nikon.

Reservations placed in the coming week can expect delivery in mid January for Canon and late February for Nikon.
Thanks. Excellent news indeed. There's here more related asking your attention -- can you help there please?

No. I have not and I personally spoke on the phone with Erik earlier today (about 12:30PM Monday). I am pleased to report that he seems like a wonderful, comitted, competent gent who is genuinely concerned about making this new product the very best it can possibly be.

He said that they have been very pleased with the number of mount systems ordered.

...and I heard through the grapevine that he also told you that "most people who end up buying the Nikon mount will eventually want to buy the Canon version."

Erik, ju got some splaining to do!!!

Erik and others have already explained the advantages of the canon mount... but off course the choice is yours to make.

Canon mount advantages. 1. you can mount all kinds of brands in manual mode on it, through simple adapter rings. nikon/leica/contax/zeiss/hasselblad etc. 2. it supports aperture AND focussing with primes. 3. Supports (unofficially and very hush-hush) aperture and focussing of many more third-party lenses from tokina/sigma/tamron.

Therefore i believe the canon mount is the mount for glassaholics, whereas the nikon mount is for the people who already owns some of the expensive af-s zooms, and some kind of mecanical followfocus.
For sometime I also thought the nikon mount would be the natural choice (maybe because the lens section of this site does have a very nikonian feel to it). But after fumbling around in the different Birgermount threads I changed my mind. To avoid further confusion and unnecessary newbie-questions someone should make a Birger mount FAQ and ask for it to become a sticky. (go-go-go aquavideo)

Birger question #45433-A;

How the heck do you know WHAT your iris is set to? If there's a single knob, controlling both focus and iris selected by a switch, where's the indicator for the current f-stop?

Forgive my Canon glass ignorance, but there's no f-stop markings on the EF/EF-S lenses, are there?

Does the information get back to the camera body and show up either on the back panel or the EVF/LCD?
