  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's a Master Prime in Full-Frame world?

Please cite your source for this "information".
Just needed to look at them and project them -physically (housing notwithstanding, hence "rehoused") and optically identical. If it looks like a duck, quacks like duck...you get the idea...

Supreme Prime 18mm T1.5 Milvus 18mmF/2.8
Supreme Prime 21mm T1.5 Milvus 21mm F/2.8
Supreme Prime 29mm T1.5 Milvus - doesn't exist
Supreme Prime 40mm T1.5 Milvus - doesn't exist
Supreme Prime 65mm T1.5 Milvus - doesn't exist
Supreme Prime 100mm T1.5 Milvus - doesn't exist (unless you consider the 100mm Macro at F/2..)
Supreme Prime 150mm T1.8 Milvus - doesn't exist
Supreme Prime 200mm T2.2 Milvus - doesn't exist

Upcoming Supreme Prime 15mm will be a T1.8. If it was the Milvus design (which is an F/2.8) it would have already been produced, not still in the development stage as it is.

I don't see much quacking going on.. 9 unique and new lenses with a possibility that 5 focal lengths build on the design foundation and lengthy history of ZEISS lenses. These are not simple "rehousings".

To the OP, if you're looking to stay within the ZEISS family the Otus 28, 55, 85 and 100mm are the closest in contrast, resolution and overall look to the Master Primes. I would add the Milvus 135mm to that mix as it is a superb lens, as is the 15mm.

Yes as long as you are ignoring the 25mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm. Because nobody uses those FLs. Nothing wrong with it , really, these are good lenses. If it wasn't for their over zealous marketing dept....

Please reread what I wrote if you think I'm ignoring the 25, 28, 35, 50 and 85: "with a possibility that 5 focal lengths build on the design foundation and lengthy history of ZEISS lenses." I was pointing out that 9 out of 14 focal lengths in the set don't even have an equivalent in Milvus, so your statement that Supremes are simply rehoused Milvus is clearly incorrect. (And I think you meant to include the 135mm, not the 28mm which doesn't exist as a Milvus focal length and which I addressed in my original post.)

But hey, thanks for acknowledging that they're good lenses :wink5:

Well technically I am correct. I did NOT say ALL Supreme lenses are rehoused Milvus. But eventually they may be...who knows

The DOF charts for the Otus 28mm and the 29mm Supreme Prime are nearly identical... the number of optical elements is identical....
I own the 4 Otus lenses and some Milvus and they are really great...

Supreme Prime 29mm seems to be an Otus 28mm

If you consider a lens like the Supreme Prime 29mm, for example, just do the math. There are 16 optical elements inside,

Hi Ron I'm currently building a set of Otus / Milvus. You mention the 15mm being a superb lens. I've heard such things from other people as well. Any insight into the 18mm? I'm trying to decide between the 15mm and 18mm Milvus. The next focal length in my set would be the 28mm Otus. A bit of a gap between focal lengths but I'll make do.

Hey Drew-- I have the 18mm in house right now, considering adding it to my kit (alongside the Milvus 35, 50, and 85). TL;DR: it's a really nice lens, I'm confident it can hang with the rest of the Milvus set, and so I think you can choose based on which focal length you prefer without fearing a noticeable change in character or quality. (For my part, I rarely want something wider than an 18mm and am often happy with a 20mm.) The 18mm is one of the lenses that received a redesign over the "Classic" version of the 18mm, going from f3.5 to f2.8, and it's not just faster but better in just about every way than its predecessor.

If your goal is simply to choose the lens with highest resolution (or some "test chart" quality), I don't have the 15mm on hand to compare. However, ephotozine posted their own imatest results for each lens, and found them very similar (here's the 18mm write-up).
