  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Johnny, interesting placement of the lights on the 3D rig, would have thought lights in that position might cause backscatter of flaring, guess not. Are those the Gates VL24's?

Backscatter and bounces off of the mirror can occur in just about any mounting position, but you are correct in that it can cause mostly back-scatter issues, but when you are only two in the water operating this rig, and two cameras in the water....we are forced to do frontal lighting. It works just fine if you don't concentrate the light towards the center of the image, and in fact try to keep the lights more in an concave/outward position so light falls off the image plane. As you can see in the following photo, the best lighting is when we take it off the camera and do backlighting or over head lighting of the subject. This is by far the most artistic approach and of course gives a completely different look. I love it. But we need bodies for this type of lighting.

Ps...the battery operated lights you see are indeed the Gates 24's. Then for more power and long duration we use cabled lights that are connected to a generator at the surface using 500 feet of cable. Typically we need a lighting person in the water and then a cable tender at the generator, but we were only working as a two man team running the boat and filming.

I think it would be very easy to modify my Nikon mount - and it only costs $295!

As I say, Gates has one for evaluation - let's see what they do with it.

For anyone that wants to use Doug's mount, an adaptation would be required to bring the iris gear further forward to mate with DEEP EPIC. The simplest approach is for Gates to replace the silver gear found on Doug's mount with one of our own design. If you're interested contact me offline.

Fish Farming with Aqua-Pods: shot on Epic

Fish Farming with Aqua-Pods: shot on Epic

Here are a few frame grabs from a shot shoot for a PBS/NatGeo 5 part series in production for next two seasons....This is a very interesting new way to raise farmed fish in Aqua-Pods in deep ocean waters.
....yes, magenta issue raises it's ugly head.

Johnny:

If you've read many of my thousands of posts - I'm not often complimenting others work - but I have to say that first shot is REALLY cool. Nice work!

Michael, i take that as a big compliment. Thanks! That's the shot i wanted when originally discussing this shoot. But day one was too bad with poor visibility....day two it was nice and able to get that shot about 60-70 feet below the Pod.
Thanks Michael,

Johnny,

Very cool shots indeed. But wow, 70 ft below and still not fitting the whole pod in the frame, were you shooting a narrow lens? And the magenta issue does not seen, at least not at these small resolutions, anywhere near as bad as in other cases. This farming technique looks interesting but still inhumane...Where is this, Pacific?

johnny, these are epic. shoot me some r3d trims if ya want and i can shoot you back a look to apply :)
btw, i sent you an email the other day - probably buried somewhere...

Yes....this pod if i recall the dimensions is something like 24meters in width. It's huge. Lens i was using were Nikon 16-85 and sigma 15mm. The Nikon is not full frame, so zoomed to around 17.5 or 18.
As for the magenta...you don't see the full force of it just because i did a bit of photoshoping to it. But the original R3d has a good bit of magenta byass.

....Paul, i'll look for your email and get back to you.

Johnny, Rudi, I'm having a discussion on another thread, and this post came up;

"Hi Tom, In some situations (and not in others), the red pixels seem to extend in a zoom a little to the front and to the back of true focus (in areas that are definitely soft). The effect seems to dissipate front and back of true focus, but is still there. I'm thinking something like a peaking knob that could modulate the effect could be quite helpful."

Could this be at all related to the dreaded magenta issue?

The u/w magenta issue has nothing to do with focus. I can shoot you whatever image tomorrow in focus, out of focus, the magenta will be there.
Also the noise in the red channel is pervasive and lack of saturation too.
The entire image is affected.
Cheers,

Michael

I honestly don't know what that statement means. Can you explain this better?

sounds like some kind of chromatic aberration... but the language isn't really clear, probably hard to explain - need to see images. which thread?

Like Michael said, the magenta contamination has nothing to do with focus, so this problem must be something completely different, and by the sound of it, probably lens induced.

DEMA anyone?

Who's going? I know the usual suspects of course, the Ellerbrocks, the Hastings, etc, etc. Should we meet up there and share some stories? I hear stories are much better shared over a malty fermented brew called beer, and I'd be willing to test the validity of that statement. A couple of software companies had asked me to run some tutorials on color correction of underwater footage, and I was getting set to run a couple of such presentations, but as the timing was too short for the arrangements, I will thankfully be there just to look around, do some networking and conduct a few interviews for UnderwaterCinema.com, so if anyone else will be there and they feel gregarious, let me know. I'll be there only Saturday and Sunday. My mobile # is 305-815-3560.

Michael Hastings and I shared a booth, it's number 874 and would love to say hi to anyone going to the show. We will have Starbucks coffee in the booth in the mornings, and will have vertical and horizontal imaging displays. Mike will have housings displayed of course. Hope to say hello to you guys there. We are joined with Capt. Slate's Atlantis Dive Center so in total we have 3 booths.

Best,
Frazier Nivens, Ocean Imaging

I will be at the Aquatica/Amphibico booth. I asked the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders to help out, but they said no. Stop by anyways and say hello, looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Tom

The mermaid I filmed in the Honduras earlier this year will be over at the Neptunic booth (as shark bait I guess), gorgeous gal, maybe we can get them together, seeing as how this is a water-themed event.:smile5:
