  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Reduser Logo (contest?)

I don't think that is quite right. I seem to recall that you can't just edit the data in a font, you would have to redraw it from scratch. In the UK, at least, the actual shape of the letters have copyright themselves too. So if the font you are using as the basis for your redrawing is in copyright you have to redesign it signifcantly. This is the reason the font Arial looks so awful, it's Monotypes dodgy reworking of Linotypes Helvetica. It is also the reason Linotype is constantly suing companies who rip off their fonts, rename them and sell them on as something else.

The use of commercial fonts in logos is one of those areas that is a bit grey. I think it is usually against the terms of the font license but no one is going to come after you unless you are a big fish.

You are right in that you cannot reshape a font and sell it on. I was talking about editing the font used in a logo, if it isn't using the original shape setout in the font or variation of that font then you do not need to own the copyright to include it in your font... It was one of the few things I remember from my Typography and Graphic communication degree lol, if it has changed in the last 4 or 5 years then my bad but I very much doubt it. Linotype sue people who repackage their fonts and sell as their own for profit, not those who reshape them for use in logo's.

I think you'll find the correct title of the degree was Typography & Graphic Communication, Michael Twyman was very particular about the ampersand. I think we may have to meet up Paul.

Check out this link... it relates to the legal aspects and the thrust is that it is a very murky area http://www.gag.org/dear_mark/mark_fonts.html

Quickie, J's already seen it though...

I like this, but it probably wouldn't work in a horizontal format.

Ace, do you have any other brushed metal texures so that all the letters aren't so repetitive? Or maybe a slight rotation.

When you linish stainless steel radially, the brush pattern for each sheet of steel reflects the light at the same angle regardless of how its rotated. Think of dial tops on high end stereos. Rotating the gradients would be physically incorrect. since each letter is cut out of its own sheet of brushed steel, you get the identical reflection pattern!

Love the Ace logo choice. Very nice.

oohhh, Ace - she's back !
looking bad, too ...

Thank You.

Not entirely true. Line up 4 dials in a row. Each dial from the same angle would look exactly the same (assuming the exact same groove frequency) but each one is at a different angle to the viewer, even if it's slight.

uh oh, I smell some math....

lol, Curt.

look at all the dials straight on - now move a light source. Dont move yourself only the light.
What happens ?
Does it matter ?

It's too late?

It's too late?

I don't know...

If you need more resolution, just ask.

Nice work...
