  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

Hey guys, so here is what we see on our Seiki with a Decklink 4K connected with HDMI.

Didn't Neil W. Smith report problems using the Decklink 4K card?

OK, the SEIKI is acting up a bit and I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue. I seem to recall reading someone else reporting this, but can't find it... 1080p works fine. When I feed it 3840x2160 from an OPPO 103 now it intermittently loses sync and goes black for a second and then comes back on, reporting the proper 3840x2160p @ 24Hz as the mode. Seems to do it when the screen drops suddenly to very dark or there's a jump cut or other transition. Now I have to pull the SEIKI off the wall or lug one of my workstations over to try to duplicate the issue with another 4K source.

Jeff: Having basically the same problem. It worked fine playing a BD disc of Les Miserables up-scaled thru the 103 using the Seiki supplied HDMI cable. (OPPO cable didn't work??) Then, when I tried The Hobbit, it exhibited the same problems/issues you mentioned. Tried both the OPPO and Seiki cables ... no difference. I put the Seiki cable back on and then tried some of my own BD discs that I burned at 1080p @ 23.976. Played fine? I don't have a video card that will output 4K, so I am "stuck" using the OPPO to feed it. I am having discussions with the guys at OPPO now about it. I have ordered some new HDMI cables from Monoprice in an attempt to narrow it down to the disc, the cable, the player or the panel. If it turns out to be the panel, luckily Seiki has an office in Diamond Bar, California, which is just down the road. So if it has to go back ....

Bill, I've been watching the Goonies Blu-Ray for the last 30 minutes with no hiccups now, upscaled to 4K. I was going to blame it on that fancy blue HDMI cable that came with the SEIKI until I just read your post. Swapped it out for another cable and so far, so good.

One other thing I'm seeing from the OPPO to the SEIKI is that even though both are reporting 24Hz, I swear I'm seeing pull-down judder. Going to try a few other discs and compare. If I start getting the sync loss issue again, I'll lug my HP over to the screen and do some more testing. The cable I'm using now has two ferrites on it and I think it's the one that came with the OPPO, but I don't recall. I may try a couple others...

For pushing 4K, you'll need the newer cables from Monoprice -- the ones with the red on the connectors and of those, the ones rated as "high speed". I think they only come in lengths up to 10 feet at that speed rating.

Judder: When I play my 4K footage, I still see judder on the 50", but the same exact media on the 30" shows no judder. I'm beginning to think it's having trouble sending the data down the HDMI path. 1.7 gigabits/sec, or something like that, isn't easy.

Are you guys getting smooth playback when playing long play 4K red footage with the computer ? You are playing 4K red footage, right .... that's what this monitor is made for IMO.

From my Samsung Blu-ray uprezzed to 4K, no. Computer playback, yes, but I think it's the player. I just got my replacement and will test more today.

Does not work with the HDMI output from the decklink 4k extreme, but can't get a signal from the decklink on the Sony 55" 4k LCD or the sony VPL-1000 4k projector either, signal out of range/not supported. BM says they only tested it with the NEC monitor, my guess is they are not using reduced blanking and the NEC maybe more forgiving then the Sony/Seiki consumer devices.

Did anyone confirm if this works with the deckling 4K? On the verge of ordering it...

I had the Seiki for one week and it is incredible as monitor. There is one main problem for me that is too tall to just sit on the desk. I had to lowered it 3-4 inches and all my neck stress is now gone. In addition to other on this forum I see loosing a frame and going blank for a split sec if I drive it @31Hz, while @29 it is stable. It could be a bandwidth issue. Mine is connected to a GTX580.

Horrible, built in scaling is bad.

F55 4k output should look great though. Waiting on the AJA Hi5 converter to test as the F55 ouputs 4096 and the Seiki wont sync to it, need the AJA box to crop it to 3840.

Anyone hooked this up via HDMI out of the Epic/Scarlet? If so, how does it look?

I got their new "RedMere" slim high performance cable. You are right. They only go to 15' in length. Just for shits-n-giggles, I think I will pick up either a Samsung or Sony 4K up-scaling player this weekend and see what happens. That will definitely narrow things down.

Will be interesting if you do round up another player. Other than my OPPO, which I've only had for a short time, I have an older Sony BDP-S350 and Panasonic BD30. Both work fine, just no 4K upscaling and being older they're slow to load.

No more dropouts since the cable swap with the SEIKI. But I also haven't really pushed it much since. I'll play with it more tomorrow.
