  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

How possible/not possible is it to connect the Seiki monitor, via single HDMI cable, to a RED Rocket Breakout Box?

We currently have a 4x RED Rocket expansion system piping to the RED Breakout Box and then a single HDMI cable to the Seiki. We are able to push a 1080p signal no problem, but higher resolutions split the screen as if there were multiple 1080p monitors on the receiving end.

Is it possible to use a single HDMI for 4K playback to the Seiki, from the Breakout?

Thanks in advance.

**JUST GOT THE ANSWER: No, but with a Rocket-X we can. Good to know. Rocket-X ordered.

You can run 4K from the current Rocket via quad HDMI or quad SDI. If you use a converter box like the AJA Hi5 4K, it will take the 4x SDI connectors and multiplex them into a single HDMI 1.4 to show 4K.

Jeff, that's the box I was looking at... thanks for confirming.

I'll keep posting on this thread as I get more info, but it looks like this thing is going to complete an awesome work flow. Final grading may have to be done in a proper DI environment, but the ability to look at footage in 4K for focus and exposure, cut and finish in 4K will be a dream come true!

Has anyone tested the AJA Hi5 4K with this monitor?

For a bunch of different reasons I can't go into more details .... but trust me on this one .... AJA are actually doing it as we speak.

AJA Hi5 4K -- It works. Just a warning though, you will need a hefty system with lots of RAM. REDCINE-X isn't optimized for highly multithreaded use and it really depends on the Rocket. You will be decoding and cacheing all your frames at 4K resolution.

Still no luck with the Kona 3G via HDMI. Have to go via SDI, as with the Rocket. I wish I had a DeckLink 4K to test with.

50" is just too big for a desktop monitor, but the resolution is nice. GTX680 / GTX690 and Titan handle it beautifully, although it's limited to 30Hz -- I guess 31 if you push the timings a bit. I'd love a 36" monitor at this resolution for my desktop that could run at 120Hz.

What are the negative effects of only 30Hz, screen flickers?

Anyone tried the Blackmagic converter instead of the AJA one (Mini converter SDI to HDMI 4K) ?

I could NOT get it to work with my Seiki monitor at 4K. I tried a variety of frame rates (up to 30p) and formats without any luck from SDI sources. The monitor ends up saying 'Not support' most of the times. A couple of times, it displayed something for a brief moment and then disappeared. If I plug only one SDI, I get correctly 1080p30 output.

The monitor works fine from Windows7 at 24, 25, and 30p (from the HDMI output of a Nvidia 670). I couldn't get a correct modeline for Linux yet (at some point the GPU was convinced it was running at 3840x2160@30p but the monitor kept displaying 1920x2160@30p).I'll keep trying with Linux next week.

Hey guys,

so here is what we see on our Seiki with a Decklink 4K connected with HDMI.
We don't know what the cause is and we tried all different 4K settings the card provides.
In 1080P it works fine.

Has anyone a clue what could cause such an image?

Thanks,
Daniel

OK, the SEIKI is acting up a bit and I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue. I seem to recall reading someone else reporting this, but can't find it... 1080p works fine. When I feed it 3840x2160 from an OPPO 103 now it intermittently loses sync and goes black for a second and then comes back on, reporting the proper 3840x2160p @ 24Hz as the mode. Seems to do it when the screen drops suddenly to very dark or there's a jump cut or other transition. Now I have to pull the SEIKI off the wall or lug one of my workstations over to try to duplicate the issue with another 4K source.

Heh heh.. beg to differ :) you just need a big desk.

I have a big desk... maybe I just need to clean it off. :) It's unbelievably bad, I'd take a pic, but it might show just how insane I really am. Given the above issue, I may have to take the SEIKI down from the wall and place it on my desk, which will require a massive desk cleaning and purging. Need to get to the bottom of this before I decide if my SEIKI went bad or if it's an OPPO problem or just mutual disagreement between the two. Didn't experience the issue when I first tried it with the OPPO and didn't see any anomalies with it previously connected to the Titan or GTX690 in my workstations. Hmmm...
