  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

Just pulled the trigger. Scarlet Dragon, I hope your worth it. It boiled down to the Epic-X having better frame rates, but what the Scarlet-D will have is plenty enough for my work AND the native ISO being 2000 is HUGE. I can't wait to see it in action.

It says a lot about RED as a company that so many people will quasi-blindly toss down this kind of fliff for an upgrade.

nope.. you are my right hand guy. When you are asleep I have panic attacks. I don't think everyone realizes just how quickly everything would fall apart if you actually started going to bed at night :)
 
Scarlet Dragon upgraded at 2:18PM EST.

Anyone know if there are more detailed specs anywhere? Would love to see a one pager.

Let's be clear - hardware end, EPIC-M DRAGON is all set. Hence us upgrading cameras five feet from me at our NAB booth. Beta firmware is what we are currently running. I wish (just like everyone else) I could predict when it will go to release version. Only testing and time can give that answer....

I am pretty sure there is more Red Bull than blood in my veins, haha. I guess in the end, it's all RED.
 
Personally I went for the Scarlet Dragon. Should be an amazing image and very useful in many conditions. Then in a year or so, spring for a Epic Dragon and use this little critter as a B-Cam. Still waiting on the new Mac Pro before I go 6K.

Is 6k/24-25fps even a possibility at this point Jarred/Brent?

The thing about going Scarlet-Dragon is that, if you really wanted to get to Epic-Dragon down the line, you could probably sell off your Scarlet-Dragon for ~$14.5k and put in the same $9.5k needed to get to Epic-Dragon... Unless Scarlet-Dragon new costs less than ~$14.5k, but if that's the case, people wouldn't be upgrading their Scarlets, they'd just be buying new and selling their SX brain for ~$5k.

The pricing is really awkward for these upgrades (especially sans warranty). Balancing act, really; Pros and Cons combined with how much leeway your bank account can afford.

I assume the Dragon Epic and Scarlet have the same sensor...so cropping will occur on SD. Correct? Any method on the future to gain full FOV?
 
Even if 6K could be unlocked just for stills/timelapse use that would be a really big deal

Be careful with that. My Red Bull addiction caused me to end up in an Eastern European emergency room overdosing on caffeine. Nothing a handful of activated charcoal tablets couldn't fix, but still pretty terrifying. Heart going nuts, shaking, convulsions, etc... Too scared to drink energy drinks anymore :)
