  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fujinon 19-90 T2.9 S35 Cine/ENG lens...

Also ergonomically its so comfortable to hold with the grip attached. It seems to make the epic balance so much better, cause youre supporting from the source of the weight, not a rail below it.

My Fujinon is smooth as butter with the Epic, now that it has the external power cable. Can't wait for that cable to be backup or for other cameras, should Red get it communicating!

The engineers are talking... its a long shot, but we will see if there is any options.

Spoke with one of Red's engineers yesterday about the inability of the 19-90 to communicate lens data to Epic. Not sure if it was a lens specific issue, but we could not get the data to display - it briefly flickered on for a moment, but was completely erroneous and then it disappeared. Chuck Lee and Miles Shozuya tell me that Fujinon follows the Cooke i protocols, and its all implemented. Red engineer was saying it could be mis -alligned contacts or something mechanical. When I swapped to an S4i, the data display snapped on immediately.

Anybody have any luck getting lens information to dispaly on their Cabrios?

Thanks for the report Peter. Do you know what cable/connectors you used? There's a 4 pin Lemo power connector on the new +1 module and I'd love to have cable that went right from there to the lens to power the servo.

Thanks for putting some engineers on task Jarred. In addition to sorting out the lens data issues perhaps you guys could offer a power cable from the 4 pin Lemo on the +1 to the Cabrio...

I know its a cinema camera not an ENG camera. That said, not every feature is shot in the traditional style. Being able to use the Epic/Scarlet like an ENG camera would be a huge plus and having a zoom like the Cabrio with a hand grip and servo zoom is the crux of the biscuit.

Cheers - #19

I hope it can work! This lens is near the top of my 2013 list of stuff to buy... :)

There is a dip switch inside the cabrio servo handle that allows you to choose between LDS and i/data. Mine shipped with it selected to i/data. I am only mentioning this in case it was over looked by said engineers. Just saying to make sure the servo handle is selected upon i/data

Thats what the Fujinon guys told me as they were flipping those dip switches.

Ryan are you able to get i/data out of your lens to display on the Epic GUI?

Has anyone used the Macro function yet? My lens is at CSC so i dont get to play around with it that much. Just curious if anyone has some footage or stills. How close can it go?

I'm not able to. Just wanted to throw it out there for anyone working on it at RED.

^ Will be re-doing this test very soon. Will post second test results hopefully today.

Used it on a couple of things last summer. Works very well. You can ride the little macro knob. It is like having a whole set of macros without changing lenses. So great to have this function.

This seems like an almost perfect lens.
How do you guys think this compares to the Red Zoom 18-85?

I currently have 18, 35, 300 Red Pro Primes, but I'm struggling with a few issues
- I don't have all the primes I need
- to bring many primes with me on airplanes is very problematic. In fact every transportation is problematic since they are together so heavy. It will get worse if I buy more of them. For this reason I use a collection of Canon lenses mostly, also because they have IS.
- I would miss the zoom. I have filmed a lot of animals and interviews and it really helps to quickly be able to zoom in and out. This caught me a bit of guard since I'm used to using primes for still photography

Currently I have my eyes on both the Fujinon lenses however they are so costly so I'm considering alternatives. As far as I can see the Red Zoom
- is MUCH cheaper. I could sell the 18 and 35 (ouch) and get a Red Zoom used
- Yes it's heavy but 1.5kg more than the Calibri shouldn't kill me too much or? Can you really use the 3kg calibri handheld anyway?
- How does the image compare? From what I understand the Calibri is near perfect.

Well any thoughts are more than welcome!

Is 3kg really easy handholdable? Is it maybe because of the different form factor or?

It's easy for me, but 15-20lb sandbags are a "normal" part of my life. 6lb lenses are a "happy spot" for me personally when it comes to handheld and shoulder shooting.

The neat thing about the Cabrio though is having the hand control on the lens while having the camera on your shoulder.

I came from a world of heavier cameras. Much heavier. Anything in the 20lb or less range is a miracle to me still.
