  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just wondering Re: Dragon Pricing / Upgrade

P.S.
IMO a pre NAB announcement of a mini Pro-Res or DNxHD 2k-4k module and pricing would be a clever move.
If a module like this is imminent why wait to announce it at NAB ?

Like many Red User have mentioned (rightly or wrongly) the lack of this option is seen as
a perceived weakness in the Red workflow and and gives some producers a reason not to
opt for Red when shooting. Sony has addressed this market with their recoding options,
so why wait any longer ?

My 2 Cents

About the price, don't forget the FIRST Red one is still better in terms of specs if you compare with all others cameras on the market except the MX based ones.

4,5k Raw built-in - 2K 120fps Raw built-in.

Even the F55 can't do that without an external recorder, the C500 can't aswell.

So, the bargain today, is to buy a Red one Mysterium non X.

Yeah I asked that question. No other details though.

I think something like this is coming. It's been hinted in a forum response to someone that said RED wouldn't go to the trouble of making MINI-MAGs if they were only for 1 product.

Red likes to drop the marbles at NAB. It's a bit of a tradition. Last June--yes, June 2012--Jim said you'd better go to NAB in 2013. Whatever they have in store, they will probably release then. Possibly giving first pick or a special package option to those present.

If you're desperate to be first in line for whatever Dragon brings, going would not be a bad idea. The die-hards are closest to Jim's heart, he's said it about a million times; if you're there and at the Reduser party when they say "ALL A Y'ALL ARE FIRST IN LINE FOR THE UPGRADE PLUS: FREE BEER!", you'll be a happy man. If that doesn't happen, you still got to go to Las Vegas and NAB and it was a tax write off. Not a bad wager.

Am I the only one who would be happy and not the least bit surprised if they just released a new brain?

Hi Chris ! Yea the Meizler module is great, but it's 13k and almost the same price as a F5, plus it adds a lot size wise to the Epic/Scarlet.
The F5/55's option is a lot simpler and more compact.

In reality Marks, Mini - DNxHD/ Pro Res Module would makes the Epic/Scarlet the ideal solution for people who need
quick turnaround formats for broadcast, post houses or difficult producers.

The problem is a module like Mark's would require an ASIC (to convert the raw data sent through the brain to ProRes/DNxHD), which requires a heatsink, which requires a fan, all of which draws substantial power.

In other words, it wouldn't be cheap or small... Unless they used the HDMI port like the +1, as it is already decoded, and so would not require an ASIC... but it'd be limited to 1080p/60 (or is it 30).

whatever it is it better be bloody good. A DR improvement at somewhere more than $6k (probably closer to $10K) is going to be hard to swallow unless there are some big improvements within epic and it's modules.

My pix 240 already does this. If red had simply commissioned sound devices to make a module a year ago, this discussion would be over and maybe we wouldn't be worried about losing rentals to the f55.
