I was thinking, what is a basic ‘ball park figure’ for a Red Epic/Atom 3D Magnesium Rig price, including four 256 GB SSD Cards, two 35mm Arri/Zeiss 16mm Ultra Prime T1.9 Lenses (because of its 33mm Image Circle), the whole Rig.

1. Two Epic Cameras ($28,000 X 2); $56,000.00
2. One 7” LDC Current Model (will probably change, not sure to what); $2,500.00
3. Two SSD Side Modules ($2,500 X 2); $5,000.00
4. Four 256 GB SSD Cards (for shooting HDRx™ Footage) ($3,200 X 4); $12,800.00
5. One Red Power Pack with two batteries and one charger; $1,400.00
6. Two 35mm Arri/Zeiss 16 mm Ultra Prime Lenses T1.9 (which would give us an effective T2.8 - T stop when going through the Beamspliter Box) (33mm Image Circle) ($14,300 X 2); $28,600.00
7. Electronic Technica Atom Magnesium 3D Rig; $84,000.00
8. Electronic Technica Pro Kit; $20,000.00
9. Electronic Technica Lens Control System; $12,600.00
10. Hedén Lens Drives; $16,000.00
11. Hedén Large Set of Six $2,650.00
12. Hedén Small Set of Six; $2,750.00

Total ‘Ball Park’ Epic/Atom Magnesium 3D Package; $244,300.00

Notes on cost and configuration from ET

Notes on cost and configuration from ET

Just a quick note;
item #10 is a set of 6 Heden drives (2 small and 4 large I think)
...so items #11 and #12 are redundant.

also, you identified a pair of primes which only need 4 lens drives for focus x2 and iris x2

We are quite fond of the Optimo Rouge lens 16-42 or 30-80. They are high quality, light weight and have user-friendly zoom tracking adjustment so your images match perfectly from wide to tight. I believe they are roughly $20K each. Zooms are a little slower in terms of light gathering but really speed up production as you can change focal length in seconds.

Another option we are really excited about is RED's 17-50 zoom. Can't wait to spend some quality time with a pair of these.

Yeah we are with you Stephen, and look forward in bring over couple of 17-50's to set up ;)

But we might have to remove our Hoods..

Thanks for your notes Stephen; it’s just a ‘rough figure’ to see what ‘ball park’ we're talking about. Like Ketch says, the price can flow between; $250K to $300K depending on a number of various circumstances. Also the camera configuration can affect the price, as well as the type of lens. But I think is safe to say that the price range is about right ‘plus or minus’.

$300K
very interesting side notes, thank you for posting this and doing the math.

16mm lenses?
why not 35mm Ultra Primes?

Time to work so much harder.

Yes ‘BigLu’; I did say, “Two 35mm Arri/Zeiss 16 mm Ultra Prime Lenses T1.9 (which would give us an effective T2.8 - T stop when going through the Beamspliter Box) (33mm Image Circle) ($14,300 X 2); $28,600.00”.

There are TWO 35mm UPL Lenses in a 16mm Focal Length.

me will not sleep tonight so excited me is

just do not know where me goes look for 300 thousand bucks :willy_nilly::biggrin:

In thinking about the basic ‘ball park figure’ for a Red Epic/Atom 3D Magnesium Rig price, lets REDO the calculations a little bit, taking into consideration what Stephen Pizzo from Element Technica suggested that we remove the Large and Small set of six, and that we use the Optimo Rouge lens 16mm to42mm Zoom Lens with the Rig. By the way, Stephen you guys have designed a ‘true work of art’ with the inclusion of the Epic X - 5K Camera into a truly workable package, my hat is “off to you”.

6. Two 16mm to 42mm ANGENIEUX Optimo DP Rouge Zoom Lens 3D Ready Package (with a 32 mm Image Diameter) ($20,999 X 2); $41,998.00
7. Electronic Technica Atom Magnesium 3D Rig; $84,000.00
8. Electronic Technica Pro Kit; $20,000.00
9. Electronic Technica Lens Control System; $12,600.00
10. Hedén Lens Drives; $16,000.00
Total ‘Ball Park’ Epic/Atom Magnesium 3D Package; $252,298.00

I was reading the Element Technica web Page, and something caught my eye, it was; “Technica 3D family of tools to free creative producers, directors and cinematographers from the limitations of existing 3D equipment and the often artificially created constraints erected by boutique 3D production houses seeking to keep the “secrets” of 3D behind the magic curtain.” It seems to me that a company that opens the “Secrets of 3D” to the general public, it’s a company I would want to do business with. Just a thought! I want to say that I do not have anything to do with Element Technica.

This is one of the reasons Steve and I, have decided to go with 3 of the ET ATOM 3D rigs, instead of 3Ality's TS-5,
ET guys really Rock, and Stephen, Hector, Joey, and every one I know at ET, are just super, in fact just got off the phone
short ago with Vivian, (@ 8:00pm, way past the 5:00pm closing time) She was making sure we are good to go with our Atom rigs,
talk about after hours customer service!!

We just can't wait to start shooting Atom ;)

See you soon Stephen, and never stop Rocking, we Love ET ;)

Some of the reasons to shoot with the Epic/Atom 3D Rig are; In the future, we’re talking about the next two years or so.

The way things are trending. A film shot in 3D will insure that as distributions becomes more competitive in theaters; there will be a tendency to show 3D film because they will be more popular, because of their higher ticket prices in combinations with more and more theaters going with a 4K digital projection systems. So if you’re in 2D it may become harder to find popular distribution deals for your film in theaters.

Then afterward with the advent of 3D ‘Home Theater’ the DVD distribution will welcome a 3D disc. Followed by 3D in the same 3D ‘Home Theater’ with ‘Pay Television’ such as HBO and Showtime. Then by that time, don’t kwon when, its broadcast television, it could be in the year 2020. That’s not counting all the foreign distribution means. Afterward channels like TNT broadcasting for ever.

If you don’t shoot it today, it will not play then; of course you’ll always be able to play 2D, form you’re 3D Master, in4K, you’ll be covered no matter how the market goes.

RED, please consider a 3D friendly version of the 17-50. Cheers.

As in...

the present version is not 3D friendly.

I can maybe guess why, but I may be wrong. Do you have experience with this, would you be so kind as to share?

Cheers,
Damien

What He means is as with a Hoodless version as to fit whit in the spec Aperture provided in most 3D rigs.

But the Hood on current 17-50 can be removed, just will void the warranty ;)

would be nice to have a 3d indie rig that didn't push the costs back up into the stratosphere. just when cameras are becoming accessible and reasonably priced

3D Vs 2D Difference in Cost

3D Vs 2D Difference in Cost

So what are the cost of shooting in 3D vs 2D? Knowing that the only difference is 3D, the rest of the cost stays the same, so if we’re going to shoot the film using a 5K Epic X to begin with;

Well let’s look at them, the additional cost;

1. One Epic Cameras; $28,000
2. One 7” LCD Current Model will probably change, not sure to what, I’m leaving the extra LCD so we can monitor both cameras; $2,500.00
3. One SSD Side Modules; $2,500.00
4. Two 256 GB SSD Cards, for shooting HDRx™ Footage, in actuality there will be more than that ($3,200 X 2); $6,000.00
5. One Red Power Pack with two batteries and one charger we’ll keep as-is, because again there is more power needed; $1,400.00
6. One 16mm to 42mm ANGENIEUX Optimo DP Rouge Zoom Lens 3D Ready Package (with a 32 mm Image Diameter) or whatever other lens one likes; $20,999.00
7. Element Technica Atom Magnesium 3D Rig; $84,000.00
8. Element Technica Pro Kit; $20,000.00
9. Element Technica Lens Control System; $12,600.00
10. Hedén Lens Drives; $16,000.00
11. Extra Hard Drives for transferring the SSD, it’s an unknown, depends on shooting ratios and all sort of other things, just to kwon that there is an extra cost in personnel (extra hours) and equipment.

Total ‘approximate’ additional cost for one 3D camera rig; $193,999.00

Now the question is how many extra rigs, as a Director I would prefer two or three cameras, but that’s just me! So adjust accordingly. All the other Scripting cost, Casting, Rehearsal, Pre-production, and Production cost remain relative the same. Of course there is the addition of an extra set of lenses that have to be included. In Post-production there is slightly higher cost, but it’s not that much more in relation to everything else. Now you have insurance for ‘Future Distribution’! Something to consider. The Element Technica web page with description and the individual cost can be found in their pdf; http://www.technica3d.com/downloads/downloads/Atom-Specs.pdf
