  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

painted with a red grille do you? Looks so simliar, I have a few of those olympus ones for scratch audio for sync with PluralEyes
 
The ME-52 Olympus mics work alright, they're nice and convenient, compact and serve the function of scratch audio. They don't always pick up everything you might hope they would, and yet they tend to pick up a lot of stuff you don't want them to. The extra extension cord included is nice because they can't always hide on the front of the camera. I picked up a couple back in August thanks to this thread. Ha! Don't expect too much of them and you'll be fine.

Amazon and B&H both have them for cheap.
 
Just FYI, in a pinch you can use a pair of Apple earbuds. Yes, earbuds that come without the microphone. I did it last week on a music video. I was very skeptical, but voila, there's scratch audio in all of the shots. Just plugged it in in the front and somehow the little earbud speakers become little mics. The advantage of using these things is that the audio is so bad that it would never be used on any final product, but it's a scratch guide...

If you have the Rode MicPro, all you need for a light setup is this:

You can also use the WC A-Box but that adds more weight.

Kortwich Mini-Mic

Kortwich Mini-Mic

In search of a small mic for the Red Epic/Scarlet to record scratch audio, I came across the Kortwich Mini-Mic which was designed to be made specifically for the Red Epic or Scarlet. Has anyone ever heard of this mic or have used it? If so, where can I get one? I can't seem to find any U.S. Sellers. I've attached a photo and you could simply google search "Kortwich Mini-Mic" for sites that have photo and information on the item, but no link or anything for purchase.

I bought this exact mic for my Scarlet, but can't get it to work properly?

It's either a super super weak signal, or I can boost it and get it loud enough, but have it terribly noisy and distorted.

What settings are you using to get this working? I've seen around the forums that this mic isn't compatible, so would be great if you could let me know how you got it working.

David, you would need to order directly through Kortwich. They specialized in selling and rental of pro movie audio equipment and produce their own gear also.

These seem to be Phantom versions of their iPhone mic (or the other way round)
120€ each for the RED version w/out tax

Haven't tried these. Might be interesting to test though.

Yea, I've contacted Kortwich directly via e-mail and received a reply from Pieter. He informed me that I could purchase directly from them, which I was willing to do if I could pay via PayPal. Unfortunately, they only accept credit card payments or bank transfer in which I'm not too comfortable in doing especially over e-mail. I'm still interested in purchasing and testing one out as they seem ideal compared to other options, but I will have to see about how I could get one first.

I was recently using a RODE NTG 3 mounted on a shockmount and the XLR MICROPHONE CABLE I purchased from RED, but the added size and weight was unnecessary along with the fact that I thought it to be a bit overkill considering I was using a $700 mic as a reference/scratch track for audio syncing when there were potentially cheaper, lighter, and a bit more convenient options out there.

I know some people have kind of had a hit or miss with the Olympus ME-52W, I was willing to get one myself, but I wanted to explore other options first. Speaking of those other options and just for anyone else that may have been interested, I looked into a couple of Go Pro/DSLR mics made by Edutige; the ETM-001 and ETM-008. You can find both on Amazon here:

I really liked the look and size of the ETM-008, unfortunately, I was not picking up any audio with it, not even fan noise, whether set to unbalanced/balanced, and even placing levels up to the max. I may have just got a dud to be honest, but I had better luck with the ETM-001; however, the ETM-001 picked up more fan noise/buzzing than anything, and even when speaking directly into the mic, the sound would be very faint even with levels set to the max.

So both the Edutige mics are a no go, at least from what I've tested. If I ever get my hands on that Kortwich, I'll be happy to share my findings. If anyone knows of a re-seller that sells the Kortwich Mini-Mic and also accepts PayPal for payment, let me know!
 
That olympus mic technically works but it's a super weak signal. To some that's acceptable, not for me. Still looking for a good tiny scratch solution. I own the senheuser MKE400, which works amazingly well, just not on epic. I'm now on the hunt for an adapter cable that will make it work. Anyone have one?
