  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic & old glass

no, no the anamorphic elements,i understand that, but thank you... the lens heads, for super baltars or cine kowas

Jordan: you will need to send the head to a lens tech and then write him/her a large check. Back in the day, lots of lens techs at rental houses all over the place could manufacture the focusing mount. In fact the Super Baltars were sold without the mount. Nowadays, it is much more expensive and there are fewer lens shops that can handle it. Nothing that money and time cannot fix, but you have to figure that into your acquisition cost.

I see that you are a newbie. I can already sense the next question. I do not have a list of lens shops handy. Do some research and start calling places.

thank you, i actually have been searching and asking around, no one seems to be able to give me anywhere that does it. i even talked to duclos lenses, they told me to call a place that has been out of business for 15 years. yes, id love to know a technician that can do this, especially in the LA area.

oh and btw, i see some people posting and shooting with uncoated lenses, do they just polish it off? i have some old nikons that id love to ruin :)

sooooo...uncoating a lens, in particular a nikon, anyone got anything on that?

Dont blame me if it goes wrong but i think polishing with gasoline or such would do the trick. But lenses are coated on both side and on more than the front element so if youe really want to... ruin it... then you would need to deasemble it aswell i guess.

I think Voigtländer (aka Cosina) is offering some of their lenses uncoated or at least with old fashioned coating. Or you can look for some old Russian lenses, they had very soft coating which is rubbed of easily.

Zuiko lenses rocks !

What are you guys using to get your FD lenses mounted on your Epics/Scarlets? I just found a 50 1.8 and 70-210 f4 and 2x doubler sitting an old camera bag I had laying around. I'd love to see if they're image is anything similar to K35s... especially if a cheap/dummy adapter can be used (I have the EOS mount, by the way.)

As Dave says, Mamiya lenses were used on Batman. If you like to T/S, then any good Medium format lens will do the trick.
I use Mamiya 645 format 35mm, 45mm, 55mm, 80mm and 150mm primes. They're light, built really well, have a very long focus throw and much better colour response than the Canon L collection that I have (except for the 85mm prime and 70-200mm zoom), and you can pick them up for next to nothing these days. Only downside is that they are a bit slow.

Agreed, I have Hasselblad 50, 80, 150 and 250. The first three are all 2.8s, which ain't bad. And yes...getting more affordable every day, as no one seems to give a shit about these anymore. But I'm with you, the focus throws and unique looks make them very worthwhile. Besides, my Hassy's match my Contax perfectly. They even look alike!!

They are similar to K35's but have fewer iris blades. We use an FD mount from a manufacture in poland which is good. I believe Optitek make one too. There are a couple of workshops that remount FD lenses to EF with out any additional optics, its just a replacement mount, The remount looks good. I am not so sure that EF mounts are better than FT, its not as strong but then EF might be more convenient for some.

Thanks Dave! I'm going to be checking it out in the new year... But I'm also considering a cheap/vintage 20-120 t2.9 if I can find one, so my money might go elsewhere... Or maybe even Rokinons for their speed. That said I'm consistently impressedwith what people are getting out of vintage glass (stills or cine) on MX.

Epic and 50mm Hawk-C at 2500 ISO....

I do not understand how people can complain about the low light stuff. I just love how high ISO stuff looks. Especially in anamorphic mode as then the noise gets squeezed which make it look like probably the nicest digitally made film grain I ever seen. I'm while writing this uploading a little 2 minute little test film where I shot my cats jumping around in front of the TV sofa. The room was literally close to pitch black and still the shit shines in ways that amazes me.

Now here is the actuall footage: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?92101-Epic-Cats-and-Hawk-C-s-at-ISO-2500
