  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

F5/55

It'll be interesting to see, from what I keep hearing the big-DSLR look and form-factor of the Canon cameras is one of the most popular features about them - i.e. no one really notices people shooting with the bare-bones cameras and EF glass, so they provide a level of stealth that can be highly desirable for a lot of TV production.

Now that the playing field has really opened up, it'll be interesting to see where the industry puts it's priorities in terms of camera features - because everyone's offering something a little unique and special at the moment.

I agree. Many people have poured doubt over the success of the 1DC 4K. I personally think it will be huge - because of the form factor. As you say it is unique.

Nice one Steve. Thanks.

I'm interested to see footage from the camera - what the DR looks like and general image feel. The global shutter route is certainly interesting and means they're listening to the marketplace.

Indeed.

It really is a great time to make pictures for a living.

IMO any one going for an F55 at 32k instead of an EPIC @ 19k or even better a DRAGON EPIC @ 25k (assuming that the Dragon with new Asic upgrade remains @6k) is simply a NUT case!!

I don't necessarily agree. It all depends on what image looks like. There's a lot of compelling features that are very competitive for that price, such as global shutter. That's an incredibly great feature for action block buster film making. I own 5 Epic's and are still interested in this camera. Doesn't the price drop of Epic/Scarlet show the significance, the threat? I agree with Mark that it should have happened on the meizler module as well/ or be split. As that would have made all existing cameras better for less of a price - but it clearly also would be a very aggressive move for RED, as the market of selling Epic's has probably declined and the likeliness of selling and make some profit on the meizler module is higher. My problem with meizler module is that it's not very compatible to 3d party ( at least for now) and right know we don't know what will be 100% compatible. I would order 5 tomorrow if it wasn't for that I don't know if they will actually, for example, work with our ARRI wireless systems and I don't really know what systems to invest in (don't want to invest in the old Preston and ET). So to go the extra mile of 13K (+ costs of receivers etc) to have wireless transmission (and onboard proxy recording), even though it seems to be an incredible interesting option. Is something we have to wait and see how the different options on the market plays out first.

So I wouldn't rule out this camera and what does it mean when it comes to other camera makers out there - how will they respond

If you are simply converting those prices from the Yen to GBP, you then need to add 4% (or 5%) duty for camera goods and 20% VAT. Expensive...

having spoken to RED Europe a few days ago, the Epic brain will set you back £12,990 + VAT = £15,588

I think when good Wireless HD and 2 way sound is actually available and out there then shooting without will feel very old school, kind of having cool computers but without internet. And I have no doubt that red will make a remote unit to work with the meizler. getting a hand wheel out must be a lot simpler than the wireless video stuff... and considering it's so integrated with the camera I think the price is quite reasonable, even if the FF stuff is not all that clear so far.

but I have to agree the from factor with the bricks in the back and the thing underneath the camera body is odd. Especially since we have not seen any pictures of it... how does it work with the quickly etc.

Register for vat. Buying a camera is a business expense. You get the vat back. Simple.

Yup - small amount of extra paperwork and worth it :)

Yes fully agree, the Sony cameras will (no doubt!) have a much higher price in the UK when they hit the dealers. They'll have duty added to their base price - plus dealer mark-up as well as (re-claimable VAT).

I suppose the 'battlefield' will became clear price wise when places like CVP list their prices. I suspect RED's aggressive pricing will continue.
