  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDUSER used to be so BAD ASS.

YES!!

Please Jarred, think this over... I love this to happen... ;)

I know many respectable people in this industry working for rental or studios that do not owe the camera but they deal on daily basis with RED products. They are goldmine of knowledge.

We want them to be in owners only section of this forum for sure.

So if you can come up with the serial number of the camera even if you do not owe one and that is not registered yet I will include such individuals in owners only section.

Sure this could be abused but we have to consider pros and cons

@ Jay

In reading your post #53, I see a lot of my former self in your confessions. Maybe that's why, like you, I would rather things stay as they are now in lieu of excluding or segregating anyone.

At OP, I agree 100% with your observation. I've been feeling the same way for a bit. But dont't forget us post guys (M Most and Jake Blackstone come to mind) who dont own red cameras but deal with its footage on a regular basis!!

Now, I've have been thinking about this and what ussualy puts me down is the " new posts" button mixes ALL the forums. If it left out all the sales stuff out it would definetly help the clutter. You could also make two sets of "new Posts" button. One where only some "premium" member's threads would be listed, and another one for everyone else.

But indeed something needs to be done about the signal to noise ratio...

I would also point out that an incredible tool for responding to overly opinionated under educated and experienced posts is respond:

Poop booger pee.

This was certainly the case during the early days of Reduser... and it worked!

But this was a much smaller group back then. Red is no longer a village, but a teeming metropolis.

My hommie told it like it is...because we dont care what you name your #$%^& camera that was so 2009...all the moaning because in reality they are all learning but geeze learn to troubleshoot your camera before you shout about it online

kudos Señor Luis i concur!!!

Very true. There are really two major forms of noise. The one is the "huh huh... yea.... yea...stuff.." fanboy agreement to anything vaguely Red related. The other is the Super opinionated over compensating know it all who really knows very little.
Both suck. And i imagine my "poop booger pee" commenting which is basically just saying this is not that important does not really help either. but some times I just get sort of whimsical and sentimental with my frustration on how much I miss the tight nit insightful, helpful knowledgable experience base that was here in the past :-)

I think Owner's Section is a good idea.

Better still is a Newbie section, in which guys who actually bought the Scarlet or are going rent one for their production can come and ask questions (because they would like to up their productions). This way, it does not feel like a snub.

My two cents. Hope it helps.

Great idea.

When you just paid over $10,000 on a new piece of equipment, and you are out in the field, and suddenly it does not work.. That can be a VERY frightening experience. The ability to get on here and get a fast answer, even an obvious one, is one of the strengths of REDUser. I will never fault a person asking for help, no matter how simple. That's one of our main functions here.

Could they do more testing? Sure, and the stress they just went through, and the fact that the answer was so simple most likely taught them that. But I just finished wrapping a shoot where a LARGE client decided to shoot on a camera that NO ONE on the crew had ever used before, and they are getting it less than 24 hours before the shoot. Experience does not always protect people from mistakes.

Another nice feature would be an "ignore" button.

There is an ignore button. Got to the profile of the user you wish to ignore and select add to ignore list.

A possible problem with a Newbie section would be getting the knowledgeable people to post there since they won't be reading it in the first place. In order to be effective the Red Team would likely need to be the primary source of answers on such a section. Monitoring it would have to become one of their duties. I'm not suggesting that would be a bad thing mind you, but it would require additional investment from Red.

Edit: A Q&A section where the Red Team is providing the answers might be worth the cost of an additional support contract if it were well staffed by Red, but free is of course better for the camera poor amoung us. :-)

Good on ya Jay.....My respect to a wise man..... Cheers

I feel I am in a unique position to answer this thread for the following reasons:

I am one of the original REDUsers
I used to be a "problem child" on REDUser (Like BigLu now complains of)
I now run an online academy of over 100 students for EPIC and SCARLET, and most of them are SCARLET users.

...
With "separating the forum" or a "paid membership" we are assuming we know who we're going to learn from next. Alas it's never that simple.

The problem is not Scarlet.. It was not the RED One. It's the poster. When I first got on here, I was arrogant, I was angry with choices RED was making, I was impatient. I "shared" all of this on REDUser, and sadly it did a lot of damage and cost a few relationships. Some of which have never fully recovered. I was new to the whole "Communication without consequence" thing.. I did not understand that co-existing in the community was more important that being right. Back then we were all new, and Jim, Jarred, Ketch, Gibby, etc were very patient with me. However it was not without it's rough spots.. I can still remember a very "tense" phone call from Jim one day! :)

Over time, I learned.. I got better, and I hope I have become a contributing member of this society. Even today though, there are members on here, and things that happen that cause me to write some of my more famous posts.. But 9 times of out 10, I delete them before I post them.

Even Jim is not above this.. How many times have we read threads from him that suddenly disappear. We all suffer from this at one time or another.

Scarlet users are our family. And they are not the bastard child. There are now, as we were then. In fact they are smart, brave people who were smart enough to look beyond the bull of Sony and others, and realize that the best camera around was the RED. Just like we did. To deny them, is to deny our own past. The quickest way to lose where you are going, is to forget where you came from.

Solution?: Yes their is one. But it's not a shotgun approach, it's a rifle. moderators will need to increase (I'll volunteer) and moderation will need to be a little tougher. More important, posters need to be told where they are off base, and how to improve.

There is no "School" on how to behave on a forum, and the internet itself brings out the worst in many people. I have the same frustrations as others. There is a user on here so offensive to me, that I find myself not wanting to post in threads he comments in. He's taking a lot of the fun out of it for me, but for now, I just breath. :)

As a community our strength is in our numbers.. God willing those number will grow. We just have to deal with this one thing at a time.. Sorry, but it's the only real solution.

I agree with BigLu that something has to be done.. But REDUser is for just that.. Those that use REDs..If we need to clean it up, then we'll just have to grab a toothbrush, get on our knees, and start scrubbing.. One tile at a time.

I move to make Jay A. Kelley Moderator Pro Tempore for new Redusers!

Owner´s corner is not a good idea. There are a lot of professionals which are not owners, but rent the R1, Epic or Scarlet on a regular basis and give a lot of good feedback.
I guess nearly everybody here like the "New Posts" button. Why not making it customizable by the user? So everybody could include or exclude the threads (or the posts of a user) he´s most interested in.
Me too - as a long time owner and user- I find there is a lot of instant whining about tiny little issues with Scarlet or Epic before any forum search or studying the Manual happened . But, I still prefer everybody can contribute with " a good attitude and with his real name".

That's a big ask... Lots of free work from a guy who is trying to make a business of same...

Thanks for looking out Scott.. That's cool. But I do not see this as a conflict.. Just not totally sure of the job description or that Jarred would want me to do it. In fact, I would not be able to do it alone. But I would be honored to give back on here in any way I can. Just point and I will go.

I think it would really be a collective effort of all the mods. It would have to be to work.. But I'm happy to add myself to the workload.

Since I don't own any Scarlets (but I do have 3 Epics and my original R1 MX) and thus don't read the Scarlet threads I haven't seen as much of the detritus floating around, though I don't read as much overall because there is now an awful lot of irrelevant info on the site...RedUser has become less interesting -or badass at BigLu puts it- I do shake my head (and I suspect Jarred et al. roll their eyes and/or bite their tongues) when people post the same thing over and over and over again. Why can't they read their manuals and/or release notes? Too much impatience rather than taking the time to problem solve on one's own is one byproduct of this instant message universe.

My children have tons of questions all day, every day. I try to be patient because often they truly don't know the answers but the manner in which I respond requires them to do some thinking and problem-solving on their own. Of course they're not quite at the age to be able to read but the idea of asking questions to challenge them to think, process, and arrive at their own deductions is fairly satisfying for them and my wife and I. Sounds familiar.

I have certainly found a number of posts to be hugely useful, and I have contributed to some of my own to help others, but less so now. I'm inclined to let others figure it out on their own, or let someone else jump in.

When I discover issues the very first thing I do is contact Red privately rather than post it here for a couple of reasons. First, it has to do with the huge amount of negative perception by non-Red owners or users that Red s or Epics are not mature cameras (often they go with old rumours rather than bother to educate themselves with available info). And I am proud of Red's innovation after so many years of having to compromise on gear that was only just good enough...so I gladly champion Red because they've taken risks based on Jim's philosophies, and I respect them...it doesn't hurt that they're invariably right. Secondly, I didn't see any reason not to contact Red first -they're very responsive. Third, I've tried to figure a work-around to a given situation rather than panic...we haven't had the need to solve something immediately where a previous camera build or RCXPro build hadn't been stable enough for us to get through the day. As professionals we should have contingencies; after all, we cannot afford failure.

I'd love to see the intellectual level of discourse come back to a meaningful level. Some great insights and discussions that I loved to follow simply withered on the vine. I don't know how that will happen again however. Perhaps we simply persevere and hope the cream will rise to the top once more?

My final opinion is I don't believe there should be any perceived elitism. It already exists to a certain degree since we've also chosen to endorse Red products over competing technologies. The essence of Red to me has always been a democratization of filmmaking by giving us the best tools in the world with which to realize our visions. We've seen it in the great filmmakers of our age using these tools just like the rest of us.
