ActionProducts Modular Solutions for the EPIC (Electra)

I was about ready to buy yesterday until Red told me that AP is not an approved vendor and use may affect Red warranty. I'm also concerned about conflict with red side handle and AP top plate.

AP clearly meets a need due to Red's poor planning. But when the Red I/O comes out, it will make a lot of accessories obsolete. I guess you have to determine if AP's bird in the hand is better than Red's pending whatever due whenever.

An official statement from Jarred or Actionproducts about losing warranty is very much needed. Anyone ?

Wow, that is unexpected.

Tim, have you asked them about the WC/VF options? Are these approved?

Hello Tim, Mick, Demetri, and everyone,

All ActionProducts products use 100% nothing but official RED connectors. Because of this, there is no need for approval from RED. This is the only way you would be able to take 3rd party power sources (V-Mount, AB, ect) and use them to connect to the EPIC, SCARLET, or REDone. This is also the case with other signals (HD-SDI, ect).

Wow, that is unexpected.

Tim, have you asked them about the WC/VF options? Are these approved?

I,ve posted befor, that all are Products interface only with the official connecters of the red cameras. If we need aproval for this, then you will also need every single monitor or sounddevice, every v-mount battery and any type of wireless transmitter or follow Focus approved by red! Remember this hole approvel thing got started because people messed with the wires in the pl mount of the red. Accessoires that Plug into the Common i/o of the Camera are in safe water.

Thanks
Brian

Brian, Justin, thanks for the clarification.

My AP set up

Justin,
Ive finally had time to get all my bits & pieces together and set my EPIC up with your products.
Mate they are amazing.......! Engineered beautifully, there practical, and for me they allow an EFP style setup, that's ideal for most situations, be it doco, drama or TV.
Initially i had problems with the TOP PLATE, combining the ET EVF with a top handle, but with a bit ingenuity & elbow grease, i got it to all fit on top....! i ended up chopping off the ends of REDs old top handle.
There's really nothing more to say other than well done on such well made products.......thank you
cheers
Paul

RED ONE and EPIC changed my professional life. The AP products makes it even better. All this pieces are designed by a talented cameraman who knows exactly, what we all need for our daily business. It keeps the camera small without compromises. Why should RED agitate against clever ideas which help to fill obvious gaps in the current RED accessories program?

Who at Red said this? As has been clarified, AP products only connect to the usual connectors for which many other third party products exist, how can that affect Red warranty? This makes no sense. Please tell us who said this and let's find out why. This is affecting sales for AP and there does not seem to be a valid reason. We use AP Apollo plates, XLR adaptors, 15mm mounts, Razor shoulder mount with swivel, Battery Swappack (with our Red one for many years now). All their products are well made and a have withstood use and abuse.

Cheers,
Damien

PS I am in no way affiliated with AP, jsut a happy customer.

Dan Baum told me this while I was discussing accessories with him. This was last Wednesday or Thursday or so. He wanted to know why I was not ordering a top plate. I told him I was going to go with AP. That's when he gave me the warning.

That being said, with subsequent research, I'm not sure which is going to be better, the AP package today or the Red Pro I/O sometime in the future. I can afford to buy either, but I can't afford immediate obsolescence. Thoughts anyone out there?

Justin or Brian,

Can one of you please explain the difference between:

Epic Power Package "Proteus" + "Electra" + V-Mount / AB Plates $2,690.00
http://www.innocinema.com/product_info.php?cPath=3_29&products_id=245

and

Epic Power Package "Proteus" + "Electra" + Battery Module $3,550.00
http://www.innocinema.com/product_info.php?cPath=3_29&products_id=248

They seem like the same thing on your website, but there is a big price difference.

Sounds like one you can change battery mounts and the cheaper the battery mount is hard wired?

Thanks
Dusty

the first one is with a fixed plate.
the second is more modular....you can use the battery plate directly with the proteus....hence having something like the woodencam plate

Dear Paul,

Thank you very much for the feedback. Those EPIC pictures look great, I can't wait to see some footage coming out of it!

Thank you for the feedback Daniel, this feedback is great for current and future solutions. The ActionProducts line is an expanding modular line, new modules will continue to interface with existing modules and improve efficiency of the camera and workflow.

Hello Dusty,

Just like Cuneyt described, the less expensive package has more limited configurations, where as the battery module package allows for multiple set-ups. Here is an explanation from earlier in the thread:

Hey Demetri,

The main difference in the 2 package options is that the package that contains the "battery module" rather than just the "v-mount/ab plate" has more flexibility for quick release and mounting options. As a separate module with its own quick release, the battery module adds a lot of functionality to the EPIC. The battery module can quickly be switched from the Proteus to the Electra to other mounting configurations (like the swivel mount, or on 15mm rods), allowing you to decide if you need to use the Electra or Proteus on the particular shoot (or shot) or not. The type of mounting plate (AB / V-Mount) can also be changed rather quickly for camera operators who made need to utilize 2 different types of batteries in a single shoot. The quick release system may also be favorable for customers who would like to add on future ActionProducts power modules onto their camera. For those who buy the package without the quick release battery plate, you would typically utilize just a single configuration (V-mount/AB + Electra to the Proteus to the EPIC or Scarlet).

If you have any further questions please let me know!

Just wanted to update everyone...

Check out our new first post; we've laid out the ActionProducts accessories to make them easier to find.

Also, a big thank you to Paul Moss for the awesome pictures of his AP'd rig (in addition to what he already posted):

The SwapPack is a professional dual battery module. It allows you to either "hot swap" batteries to have your camera continuously under power and/or run the camera with two batteries to extend the time before you need to change batteries. Mainly used as professional power solution for digital cinema cameras and/or stabilizing systems (as on the ActionCam), crane setups, etc. We offer the SwapPack in two different versions; 12V only and 12V/24V Version. The 12/24V version has the same specifications as the 12V model plus the ability to provide 24V camera power off two 12V batteries and a extra power mode. Built around a solid center piece of milled 7075 Aluminum packed with electronics, it offers two LEMO connectors for various cable configuration and various mounting options.

Functions:

  • Single Battery: red flashing LED indicates when battery is low. A fresh battery can be mounted on the opposite side (power keeps continually running). The empty battery then can be removed and the plate flipped for remaining weight balance.
  • 12 V dual battery "alternated": Both batteries are drained by switching back and forth. Batteries can be different types and different charge levels. The higher charged battery is then first discharged until it reaches the other battery. Because the batteries are alternated discharged you can always switch the battery that is not used. A green LED shows when battery is discharged. A flashing LED shows when (and which) the battery switches. A red LED shows when a battery is low.
  • 12 V dual battery "sequence" (12/24V model only): Batteries will be drained after each other. The battery that is not in use (or empty) can be "hot swapped".
  • 24 V dual battery: Two 24V batteries can be "combined" for 24V camera Power. Hot swap is not possible.
  • Passthrough function: It's possible to connect a extra power source to power accessories only.

[*=left]Can be used with one battery (shows when the new battery needs to be mounted) or two batteries that can be of different type/charge level. The SwapPack automatically notices which battery is more charged and drains first power from it.

Its a Cinetape - its a sonar based system that gives you an electronic distance readout for whatever object is closest to the camera - the read out can be seen in the wide shot of the camera setup at the front of the lens, it says 12' 8".
