  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Reduser 4K Portrait Competition...

In Brazil now, after a very short stop in NY, be back in Rome on Wednesday the 13th, and I'll get to work on the next 10 days to create something for the 4K Portrait event, even so at this time I might not make it myself, but truly trying very hard to create something very cool for this, very high hopes to see you and every one else there Michael... ;)

How are the 4K Portrait's coming?

I wanted to send out a word of encouragement to the people that are creating or considering creating some content for the Reduser Party.
I've had some great conversations with people that have come up with some very cool ideas and many of them are simple, smart, cleaver and should be really compelling.

Some of you may still be considering if you should enter - will your portrait be good enough? Is your idea possible? Will it be worth it? The answer to all this is yes, yes and yes. While there will always be the concern that some Redusers are more advanced than others, the truth is I've seen some of the best footage come from some of the most common people and places. No joke. Let the strength of your city, your area, your unique resources play a key role in capturing images or telling a small story.
From the simplicity of "the world of city rooftops" or "winter in the country" or "behind the scenes of fashion" or "closeups of small things" or even "fast things in slow motion" -all of these are interesting ideas full of unique, custom, 4K imagery that show off the camera and your talent.

Some of you are considering doing short MOS narratives, which are going to be amazing as well. I even thought of the idea of the "movie within a movie" concept where you actually shoot a real artist painting a real picture and making the piece all about the creation of an actual art piece...ending with the art in 4K.

There are many ways to go about this and there are a lot of ways to do it fast, simple and inexpensively. I encourage you to make use of what's around you and not to be too concerned about who else may enter. This is also a great opportunity to see how systems like Adobe CS are able to create 4K pipelines that make this possible on a single tower! I encourage some of you to document it and show off your workflows and how you pulled this off! I'll bet Adobe might even want to feature that on their site this April!

If you have questions, concerns or just want to run an idea by us, don't hesitate. There are 3 weeks until the due date and I hope that everyone considers taking this unique opportunity to show their content to our great community.

I stayed at Tropicana 2 years ago for NAB and Reduser party. Hotel is "eh" but they made lot of renovations, so prob much better now. To get to convention center:
Walk across the street to MGM and catch the monorail, or hop on the the shuttle from there. It's a nice brisk, short walk over the pedestrian bridge.

Thanks Zhibo!

Vincent-
Absolutely LOTS of grading is totally encouraged. You do not have to rely on the camera for all your looks. You can use After Effects, Resolve, Scratch or even REDCine to grade your work as you like it. Only need to shoot on RED and edit your initial cut on Premiere...then you can do whatever you want!

...
1. Portraits must be finished in the Rec709 standard and submitted in 4K resolution (4096x2160 or 4096x2304 are acceptable)
...

Newbie to Premiere question:

Using Scarlet, What Premiere Project setting is used to get 23.978 at 4096x2160 or 4096x2304 ?

I assume, this means Scarlet 4KHD leaves black bars on sides or top?

4K Portrait - 1 Week to go!

4K Portrait - 1 Week to go!

The 4K Portrait Competition deadline is coming up THIS FRIDAY, March 23rd.

Thanks to all who have entered and submitted their works and the rest who are doing so this final week.

I wanted to make one last comment of encouragement to people looking to enter in this unique competition.

With 1 week left, it's not too late to come up with an idea and shoot and post it for the competition. For example, can do something just called "WATER" and shoot all sorts of content that revolves around water: the beauty of a still lake, high framerate water drops, a fish tank, close-ups of sparking water fizzing in a glass...
Or a piece called "MOTION and shoot the interior of a fancy car, the wheels, the road passing by, airplanes landing, a bicycle chain or woman running...
There are so many ways to take it and so many ways in which to show off 4K and the camera in a creative, engaging way.
No idea is too simple, no idea too removed. Just imaging how people will react when seeing 4K images on 4K displays and how the RED tools make it easy. If you can do that, you can make something different.

Some people mentioned concerns about "not being good enough to compete." But the truth is those who take advantage of what they have and make it compelling in 4K are the ones who will succeed. When the competition is over, thousands of people will get to see what was created in a myriad of different ways and I'm willing to bet that the best portraits will come from Redusers all over the world. In this contest, a "less is more" approach might just be perfect.

Remember: part of this exercise is to creatively come up with ways to not only shoot things, but to take advantage of available R3D support tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Da Vinci Resolve and REDCine-X Pro. Getting familiar with 4K mastering is a key component to helping push the 4K agenda forward which we all benefit from, and that's a message we desperately need to get out together.

While this event is labeled as a "competition," it really represents a movement to which a collective of like-minded individuals are willing to step-up and prove that HD is not good enough. Most filmmakers have never seen 4K, let alone mastered and exhibited their own 4K project. This event is a public display of our beliefs that the world we live in deserves to be lived in 4K and beyond.

Michael my Epic and Scarlets are out... will a RED ONE qualify if its shot in 4K? Im guessing yes but just want to clarify as I have a thought I might be able to finish by Friday - EDIT and obviously no slow mo as it will be 2K on the R1 :)
thanks!

Thanks Michael. Will be hand delivering it on Friday!!! Down to the wire:)

RED ONE is TOTALLY OKAY! Doesn't have to be an Epic or Scarlet at all!
Some of the best RED content out there still comes from RED and RED MX, so no worries at all!

Getting some AMAZING entries for the 4K Portrait Competition! Thank you to all who have submitted your works this week. Some of them I've already seen in 4K and they really are spectacular.
There are 3 more days until the deadline, March 23rd at 8PM. For anyone still deciding what to do, it's not too late.
It doesn't have to be too complex. You can do something simple, somber, quiet, soft, slow, organic, whatever you wish:
Clouds forming in a sunset
Airplanes taxing on a runway and taking off
Kids playing little league baseball
A mechanic changing a tire
An aquarium full of salt water fish

You can shoot at 96fps and literally WALK with the camera through a garden or through an alley in the snow. That's what's so great about this camera and this contest, nothing is out of bounds and there is no limit to how you want people to experience your 4K content.

3 days to go means it's not too late. Get a camera, shoot tomorrow, color in REDCine-X Pro, cut in Premiere and export at 4K Quicktime and ship it on Thursday!

DPX 16bit ok?

DPX 16bit ok?

Hi Michael, we're wondering if 16 bit DPX is ok for the submission or if you need the more standard 10 bit DPX? Thanks! -Jerome Thelia

I'm sad to report my submission won't make the deadline. The bottle neck ended up in post. It's a 2 minute experimental video ending with 30 layers of Red footage at the end. Ultimately, my system (even with at 48gigs of RAM, 8-core) was not able to render out 4K uncompressed in reasonable time. Will there be a place to submit past-due entries to and/or showcase all the submissions? Would love to see what others came up with.

Well its final. My scarlet didn't arrive in time, so I can't compete. Would have loved to send you my first piece from my own 4K camera...

Wrapped yesterday. Editing. Quickly editing. Then color work. Then re-link. Then export. Then race to Light Iron on my tricycle!
