  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RCX PRO Build 11 Beta and Epic/ Scarlet Camera build 3.0 (release)

Up and running... scared me when it said it was going to take 45 seconds but it only took 10...

Presets - > alternate_keys(FACTORY) ... did I just miss this in previous builds, or is this new to 3.0.0...because I really like the less fumble worrisome alternate default keymap for user buttons A-D on the side handle :)

Yup, was in 2.0.8 at least. It's what I've been using :)

the new R3's looks really good! plus playing long clips even at 1/4 res on a quad mac tower works so much better! this version is a big jump from 10.

wow this is interesting...I'm finally seeing some microtonal separation on skin tones with red color 3...going over old footage of closeups on faces and doing side by sides against red color 1/2/3 and 3 is showing stronger microtone separation exactly that one thing i was hoping for which alexa does better than Red..just preliminary results at first but I'm liking what I'm seeing

We've also posted an update to the Final Cut Studio 3 installer, it now supports Epic/Scarlet-X as well as REDgamma3 & REDcolor3:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

My poor old 2007 MBP can't handle resolve, but Color still runs great. So glad I can grade Epic footage in it now - solves a big issue on a student short I'm working on now!

Seriously, thanks for bringing Color up to date, even if Apple EOLed it.

Great update, thanks team!

If the FCS3 installer was updated... does that mean an FCPX installer is in the plan? :)

i will say this absolutely 100% unequivocally. don't know if this puts it in alexa territory yet for skin tones but 100% so far every single thing i'm seeing red color 3 is stronger than the other 2 by far on skin tones....i'm seeing a huge noticeable improvement on skin tones...skin tones are looking much more natural. really liking what i'm seeing

That's what we like to hear :)

RG3/RC3 seem to bring back a little bit more saturation from RG2/RC2 and some nice contrast. RG3 is a VAST improvement over both previous version and RC3 is very subtly nicer as well especially with skin tones :)

It's amazing to go back and look at old footage and the striking improvement between the original color science and the new!

Thanks so much RED TEAM!

do this test: open any old file with facial closeups in RCX and pump up the contrast halfway so that the saturation on the skintones pops a bit so it's easier to notice differences and easier to see the differences in microtone separation on the skin tones in particular. then cycle through the red colors. here's what i'm seeing:

1. red color 1: saturated but unnaturally uni-colored skin tones that are either all orange or all red or all yellow
2. red color 2: too desaturated, flat gray skin tones
3. red color 3: combines 1 and 2: it's more saturated skin tones but they actually now have microtone separation where the cheeks might be rosier but the rest of the skin has a different hue/texture whereas in red color 1 the entire facial skin would often be one nasty blob of the same color

It's all in the color science. Graeme does a small tweak here and a big tweak there and turns 1000 knobs until everything lines up just right and suddenly the difference between Alexa and RED in terms of skin tones disappears.

Just remember you can't artificially create Resolution... ;)

guys im dead serious feeling tingly in my spine, like butterflies in my stomach that's how good what i'm seeing so far. it's like completely redesigned. it doesn't just fluctuate the saturation / contrast up or down, it's literally re mapping the entire canvas. this is something new. this is beautiful work (red color 3)

so at first the color change was very minimal....then I exported a still as 16 bit exr with redcolor 3 and redlogfilm and ran it through an old nuke script I had for color grading a redcolor2/redlogfilm clip. difference is AMAZING! here are the results:

first one is redcolor2
second one is redcolor3

RG3 looks to me like a mix of RG and RG2 with some help in the RED Channel. If you do side by sides I saw that most of the other colors don't radically change between RG2 and RG3 but the Red color families really pop!

RC3 also gives a nice contrast while still keeping it smooth.

* EVF black level raised in some cases

I assume this is what's causing the issues with the "milky" image on the Bomb EVF? When will this be addressed? I have a Bomb EVF in my order, but am really concerned about spending $3,200 on it if this is not going to be addressed. I'd be okay with some kind of timeframe for when it will be fixed.
