Hey guys,

A little while ago, we had the opportunity to test our the SCARLET-X "Rockwell" on the Steadicam Zephyr and the Midas Mount on a boudoir shoot. We are having a blast filming with SCARLET-X.

One of the tools we didn't get to use was the DSMC Side Handle. I'm curious to try it out on set and see how well it speeds things up. People seem to swear by it. As much as I like the touch screen controls, I would like to get my hands on the hard keys.

We took our R3D into Red Cine X Pro and transcoded out to Apple Pro Res 422 at 2k. Edited in Final Cut Pro. So nothing fancy in terms of 4k workflow. I still love the footage at 2k. Typography was done in After Effects.

I took the first run with Redcine-X pro before Anthony refined the edit and added graphics and just wanted to share some thoughts.

Filming in a location that was a natural bounce board made it so a lighting setup was unnecessary, but also put the dynamic range of the camera to the test.

Even with us just learning how to operate "Rockwell", the Red footage impressed us with its flexibility, but also showed us the behavior of the footage when there are beams of sunlight, clipping the highlights. The flexibility of the R3D files allowed us to tweak to our heart's content to make a couple of clipped clips work well. Redcine-X pro is definitely a BIG improvement over Redcine-X and I can't go back.

Along with balancing the package to the steadicam, it was a great overall learning experience made easy due to the subject matter of course :-) and really helped us go into shooting our first narrative piece with the camera this month.

Many thanks to the reduser community for their knowledge, that really helped us get right into shooting with this amazing little camera!

Rad. Even the top down shot that had the heavy clipped area on the couch was palatable. I thought the bits that were a touch on the underexposed side looked great. I don't know if that's the camera responding better to a slight underxposure, or the footage being more heavily crushed in post coming across better on the web, but that overcranked pan up shot across her torso looked outstanding. This has been one of the most useful pieces of Scarlet footage for me thus far. Many thanks.

Looks great!

What glass?

How did you correct? Balancing grade in RCXpro, then out put? Output in redlogfilm, then grade?

Thanks Noxin,

There was very little pushing in post. So most of what you see was close to how it looked straight out of the camera in terms of exposure.

I didn't notice that top down shot looked overcranked until you mentioned it, but I assure you that the speed of that footage was not tampered.

The overcranked shot I'm talking about is the close up that tilts up her torso to her chest... it's sort of a raking shot with a really crisp back light... is that not overcranked?

Funny that you mention the glass. I think we brought 7-9 different lenses, but only used the Canon 50mm f/1.4 and the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8.

I believe the workflow went like this:

RCX Pro>Pro Res 422 (2k)>FCP (Edit)>After Effect (Typography)>FCP 3 Way CC (Color Grading)> Export. Michael Shu will have to correct me if I'm wrong since he started the edit and I took the latter half.

I would say it was a very basic set up and not fully taking advantage of what R3D can really do.

Looks great!

Was this a test or a gig? In either case it's pretty exceptional. What music is that?

This was mainly a test amongst friends in preparation for our future boudoir gigs coming up. Yes, we have some photogenic friends, thank you. ;-P

Anthony found a nice track on premiumbeats.com named "electronic road". They have some really good tracks royalty free for cheap. We also used their track "the quest" for our BTS trailer of this shoot.

Thanks, Noxin! Yes, one of the things about the footage was that it responds to curves adjustments extremely well. Tweaking the curve on the overhead steadicam shot from the second floor allowed us to make the clipped areas smoothed out. There IS a considerable amount of compression from vimeo that's making some shots look a bit underexposed in comparison, for some reason.

They may have not shot anything overcranked, but I bet there was some overcranking going on in the edit suite. HIHO! Looks faab.
