  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

It's a common misconception that since Leica is a German company, their best lenses come from Germany. Ernest Leitz Canada, or ELCAN, manufactured lots of quality Leica glass on par with their German counter parts. But interestingly enough, Dr. Walter Mandler of Canada's Leica branch, was actually the one who developed the Summicron (50mm, 35mm, 90mm), the Summilux (50mm, 35mm) and Noctilux M 50mm lenses.

Does anyone know is there any reason to steer away from the Made In Canada Leicas or are they of the same quality of the German made lenses? I'm guessing they might not be up to the specs of the German lenses, but I don't know and that is just a guess.

The Canadian lenses are perfectly fine. If it says Lecia on it it meets same spec where ever it came from.

Very nice set Matt,

On the Leica Look -

As best as I can tell, without doing proper blind tests is that the Leica's have a special dimensional thing that happens I guess because of the high resolution, great contrast and smooth focus fall off. Subjects just seem to pop out in a rounded way, they shoot charts well too, but that's the thing that's awesome about them... Not really something you can measure. I should try to do a side by side and see it I've got red dot disease , but I am hampered by not having other high end lenses in Canon mount to test against.

Completetly true.

And can people please stop telling every one else how good these lenses are the price has gone up 3 fold since I started buying our sets :-)

Thanks guys. All this Leica talk has me motivated to finish out my set with the 19mm.

Fantastic look and feel...def has "leica" all over it. Please share more if you got em. Really keen to give leica glass a go on my EPIC. Summilux-C primes are looking to be some of the best glass in the world but this is a lovely alternative for budget conscious. Nice shot Matt. Cheers.

I've "sleeved" my Leica R glass and added a PL-mount to it. The PL-Mount does not make it a real PL lens, since the flange distance remains Leica. If enough are interested, I would consider making a new batch of the "sleeves". You can still use the original Leica mount, this makes it less expensive. I think the price/lens would be round 650.-US.

Features:

-Iris 0.8 gear
-Focus 0.8 gear
-adjustable focus marks (most cases removes the need for shims)
-all lens same front diameter and overall size
-front rotates

Looks great, Brian!!!

Are you still making focus gears for Leica R primes and also additional gears for zooms?

I agree with David. We should shut this thread down as a matter of urgency - I have now received my Leica R lenses and can appreciate what the fuss is all about. I even managed to find a second version of the 19mm :).

Lovely!
But how can you give them same size w/o proper rehousing. Focus rings on same position (FF don't need to move on roads) between lenses, correct?

That is correct. If you look at the lens, you will notice, that most Leica R lens are almost all the same at the mount. The iris ring is almost all the same size and position - that's how I got them all into the same size housing. Of course the 135mm, 15mm and 100mm macro need bigger housings.

Can anyone tell me , is there a difference between leica, and leitz lenses, or are they from the same company

Its the same company, Leica was added in the 80's.
The company was originally called Ernst Leitz Wetzlar. Somewhere around 1980 the company was divided into two divisions and the camera division was renamed Leica. So the newer lenses are labeled Leica. Otherwise exact same formula and manufacturing. The only advantage to the Leica branded lenses is if a later lens design was made after 1980, then you would want the Leica name is it would be the newer design...but its pretty complicated to follow as not all lenses have newer designs after the 80's.

The two most notable would be the 35mm and 50mm Summilux, both have new designs in the 80's so you would want a Leica branded lens over Leitz if you want the new design. But be prepared to pay a premium, as few were made. I think there were only 2,500 50mm Summilux II lenses made.

yes, the quality of Leica or Leitz lens has always been exceptional regardless of year made. Which lens are you referring to as there are various designs of the same lens?

Here is an example:
The 80mm Summilux labeled Leitz or Leica are identical...there are no differences.
The 50mm Summilux on the other hand has two versions- A 50mm Summilux labeled Leitz may not be the same lens as a 50mm labeled Leica...so there are differences, but it has nothing to do with the name on the barrel. You judge a Leica/Leitz by the serial number to determine the differences.

I have a set of rpp, but with the epic coming, i wil also have a set of lightweight quality glass.
I do not now excactly if i have to look to leica r , or leica m mount, because i have read that the r serie with a leitax adapter fits to the canon mount.
21 -35 -50 -90 mm if possible summilux f2

Summilux is 1.4 (only made 35-50-80)
Summicron is F2.0

M lenses are considerably more expensive and are very small. R lenses are larger, less expensive and can be modified for a matte box and follow focus.
I would advise doing a lot of research before buying lenses as the variety of Leica glass is too broad to summarize here. If you have questions about a specific lens, I would be glad to help.

If you are looking for small and cheap, use Matt's guide in post 1 for the best lenses. These will require a Canon adapter on the Epic, but the M lenses will also require an adapter and your choice of lenses is limited.

Some M lenses due to their small size, and how close they are to the sensor / camera body will be difficult to use with focus gears and Matte boxes, if you already own and use a bunch of M lenses getting the M mount makes sense, but getting a set of M's for traditional motion picture work might be something you want to look at carefully before you jump in.

M's will be great for specialty situations where being light and small as possible is the most important thing.
