  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So what can you do with a Scarlet-X...

Well, as a still cam, it is all the way up there with Epic + it defaults to come with the Canon mount.

Lucky bastards!

As much as I wanted the 2/3", that was as a supplement to the Epic... To do totally diferent types of images. Not as the primary "Cinema" camera.

The incredible thing about the Epic - once you start using it - is NOT the tech sheet.
Anyone can make those.

The incredible thing is how it under- and overexposes gracefully in a way I cannot remember to have seen since I shot... welll... stills on film...

It's all of a sudden NOT primarily a digital cinema camera anymore, but just a wonderfull camera.

As far as I can see, the Scarlet shares all those features, so I thought the Scarlet Crowd may have some fun looking into these images and tests, as that's all the fun you're gonna have.
Just get prepared to have fun and rely on the fantastic tool you are getting.
It's probably one of the best stills cameras out there. Too...

I started a small thread with tests and stills for the Epic back in June.

It has gained some traction.
Comparisons with R1MX will be posted in not so long time, too, and I try to answer the questions that arise... If I find them relevant...

Here goes:

Cheers and welcome to the fun!

I'll be posting r3d's and stills to this first post for now, so they are easier to find...

Here goes:
Please e-mail the rmd's, and I'll host them alongside your developments.

The RMDs need to be zipped before you mail them to work properly.

Just have to mention that I used a lot of diffusion on the "soft" images...

And finally the RAW files:

The R3D:

OK

2 "int car" clips to play with. These are HDRX clips, not single frames.

I challenge you to not only post your results (to youtube or wherever) but also explain how and why you chose to solve it that way.

These clips aren't really beautifull in any way, but quite challenging...

So.... The Greenscreen clip

This is 120 fps 4k 16:9
There is a reason for the framing... :)

As a sidenote - and you'll see, we had the tint going bananas that day, but I didn't really worry. It's RAW, right...

Exposuretest:
OK here is a tungsten Exposuretest I did from over to under. The last exposure is @ T22 + an ND6
They all have HDRx channel in them so if that isn't low enough, you can just pick the X channel... :)

That gives 10 stops + the X channel (3) difference between the first and the last exposure....

As you can see from the slate, I shot the R1 MX side-by-side with the same optics on this test... :)

Both of it, photography and moving images.

Also I'm not interested in any kind of slow motion if can't make over 1000 fps.

120fps or even 300fps is not enough slow for me...

So I'm very very rare in a situation to use slow motion and 60fps @ 2K is enough slow if I'm in a desperate need for that effect.

Also I don't rent and make commercials any more, just simple creative or experimental sort of work.

That means Scarlet will fit perfect to my style of shooting stills and motion pictures.

... hehe ... fun fun with gunleik .... ;-)

... with certain types of fun films .... production cost at 120 FPS are reduced to about 20% .... just sayin´ .... :-))

and it looks much more artistic !!! ....

seriously, gunleik´s thread is cool and he knows a lot of stuff ... and he is cool to hang out with ... and he knows how to cook (!)
if you can, get hold of him, hire him, learn and enjoy a very smart mind ...

so now, enough commercial, go go and read (!)

The trade off to get Epic resolution and image quality at the expense of slower frame rates is ultimately worth it for me. I will miss that 120fps at 3k potential though.

Gunleik, the quality and range of stills you showed us from Epic has me drooling with anticipation. :drool5:

Gunleik, any chance you'll be able to post some .r3d files? I'm making my way through the thread, but haven't seen any.

Hm...

I am debating that...
Giving away negatives is a bit touchy... Any paticular you want?, and I'll think about it.

Would be fun maybe to post the last frame to see what you guys would get out of it...

Post a wishlist, and I'll see what I wanna do... :)

Cheers

Did you see dramatic changes to this before FLUT ? (just curious)

FLUT doesn't affect that.

In fact I am sittng on an unpublished article on how to handle overexposure nicely on the R1. As I am onlining hours of material from a multitude of DP's, I see it and the issues it creates a lot.
I sorta landed on that that info was one of my main advantages in a competitive market, and left it on my harddrive back in March.

As THAT isn't an issue any more, I can publish it, but it has kinda lost its relevance with Epic and now Scarlet comming out...

OTOH...

There are still about 10.000 R1s in the wild...

hahaha

So, maybe now is the time

As a part of REDs "free" marketngplan for their new cameras....

LOL

My understanding of FLUT is that is is a gamma control where the top and bottom ends for each channel cannot clip, instead the ends get logarithmically compressed. Maybe I'm misunderstanding it and its relation to highlight rolloff and overexposure. I look forward to reading your unpublished article.

Nice thread. Apart from image size, do you see any difference in DR, noise or anything else between 4k and 5k? Or are the images strictly identical?

Hm.... Trick question....

hahahaha

Early on with the R1 I did a nice little test...

I took a colorimage and converted it to bitmap (black and white dots only) at different rasters and sizes

From 4k and down to SD

And then took those bitmaps back to grayscales.... And downsampled all to SD (which was my most relevant delivery at the time....)

I learned a lot about how resolution affects perceived dynamics and precission through that test.

Maybe it's time to re-do it here?

So, the answer is:

AT 1:1 pixel, there isn't really any difference between 1k and 5k.

When you start downsampling, the 5k image will look much smoother and have a lot more levels and less noise.

5k vs 4k...
The difference in pixelcount is significant, I am affraid.

But where I work, we use 4kHD for all our major TV drama. Even for Epic.
So what to say...

It is "good enough"... (I know you'll hate me saying that Jim...)
5k is just the little bit extra gooder enougher...

For stills, I'd go 5k all the way.
On moving images, the difference isn't really THAT noticeable. There are many other factors that must be at its technical optimum before the diff between 5k and even 3k will be an issue for up to 2k delivery...

really.

So...
5k is good to have

4k is need to have...

Kinda.

And that's what I guess is the reasoning behind the Scarlet-X too...

Yes. I know it's supposed to work like that. But there are other factors comming in when the sensor is approaching and actually starts to clip...

DRX solves the uneven clip'ing... (I so wanted that on the Rocket, but maybe that will come now with the GPU based RGB effects) but still the sensor isn't neccessarily very beautifull in the range where it starts to overload.

That is... Untill Epic/Scarlet-X

ok !

hey gunleik,
just want to say that I'm a fan of your work in the first 24hrs thread (which I've been following for some time).
There is some really great work in there. Both lighting, composition and concept.
edit:
and I'm usually a cranky critic !

I'm just looking for something that is a.) pushing the shadows/highs to the limit (preferably with HDRx, because I could choose not to use it) and b.) something that has skin tones/human subject(s) to see how it reacts as I push/pull the hell out of the image.

With that in mind, that last image (post 251, right?) would definitely be a good candidate.

You wouldn't happen to have any 12:1 4k images would you? I have a feeling I'll be shooting a lot of SX footage that way in order to maximize REDmag time... Plus, if 4k HDRx actually becomes available for SX via firmware, I think it'll be at best 12:1 compression ratio.

OK
I'll UL that frame on the condition that the results only are published to this thread and nowhere else...

(LOL. As if anything can be anything but gentlemans agreements on the web...)

I generally agree with this. Obviously the more tools and features you have at your disposal the more creative you can be, but generally speaking if I want slow motion that slower than half speed (48fps, obviously) then I'm going to want something considerably slower than 120fps. I'll grant you that this is by no means a general comment about what one should do. It's just my own subjective point of view when it comes to what I personally like for narrative filmmaking and narrative filmmaking is pretty much all that I do.

If there are any other RAw requests, I'll consider tem.

I'll UL that last frame in about 2 hours...

Please take it and play with it and post your results to the this thread...

Cheers

G

Ok... here goes a single r3d HDRx frame for that last shot...

Please don't publish your images anywhere else but in the thread we are now in...

I don't a lot of developments posted to the 1st 24 hours thread, if it is avoidable....

Have fun!
