  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So what can you do with a Scarlet-X...

But Gunleik here you were already heavily clipping!!!!

No any HDRx can help or so....

As I state in the main thread, there was a point to clip...

I was looking a lot into how the cam rolls off in the top

That was part of what I was interested in looking at when doing these images.

they are after all strictly cameratests, you know...

Cheers and thanks!

Like your different approach to these images!

Just as a courtesy to Benedicte that was hanging on really hard for hours with a strained foot:

She ain't no BarbieDoll...

Sweet: Sure
Barbie: No way!

Gunleik, everything is fine and OK.

Also BD corrected to Benedicte.

Thanks and regards to Benedicte and you 2.

Oh I love messing with R3D files, it's so cool.

This is just me screwing around with it, hope you don't mind.

Sorry for downrez on imageshack. It's amazing how "meaty" the r3d files is, especially with extra HDRx track blended together. I've scanned a bunch of old still 35mm negs from the past lately and enjoyed restoring some details in it. Same sweet feeling :)

Trying to achieve "natural" pink-ey skin tones. I understand the lighting was different and on the original there was some hard noise in blue channel, but on 2,5K downrez it looks almost okay. I'm exceptionally bad at correction, so I understand, that a pro colourist would done much much better job with it. Still fun :)
balancex.jpg

Niceone...

I'll just put up my stab as a reference here, too...

Keep 'em coming!
Not sure I totally agree that noise is an issue, though... :)

About noise on the face - that's what I'm talking about. I'm sure pro color guy would've done more careful job in the channels as he's obviously trained and experienced. I imagine face of the supervisor if he sees an amateur's grade "what's wrong with you, son?". Haha, hahahaha :) Okay, now I must leave grading to the professionals as it should be and stay here watching magicians at work.

If you try to lower the ISO and centre the WB a bit in the meta-stage, then you can controll the bluechannel and get the WB issues sorted in the RGB part of thing, as long as the channels aren't allready forced and messed up out of RAW...

Especially under very warm tungsten - like this - try doing a technical pass to minimize artefacts prior to finnishing grade.

that does not mean that tungstenm doesn't work. You just have to know how to work with it...

Cheers!

Gunleik, perhaps your lighting is more intended to kind of football field but not for the faces and skin tones in digital moving images or even film (just kidding ).

I was lowering all parameters, ISO, FLUT, shadows, brightness, exposure, alchemy group:alchemy and clarity, etc,...no help, the clipping stays and occurs all the time at a different places...

Here are the next images with that harsh clipping experiment where you crossing the borders of the sensor:

Thanks, Gunleik. Excellent thread. You're really helping us all out with this. I wanted to try play around with some r3d files for a while. What you're doing is valuable help for us all to prepare ourselves when the camera arrives. Canno thank you enough. I'm in the middle of an intensive work and will probably only have time to play with this in 8 days- its GP week over here- but I plan to do my own testing and will definitely only post results here :)

Thanks again Gunleik. That's why I love this community. We are really in interesting times... When does this type of sharing happened before in our industry? This is internet at its finest. :)

Nice Michael!!!

San

It clips
It is a high contrast shot that clips.
That's the whole "testing" part of it :)

But if you usee too much of the X-channel, you'll force noise in the lowlights. Unless you do it manually in nuke, shake or resolve of course. But wanted to use RCX, as that's what everyone have.

Actually I think the images came out just fine...

Really nice Laurent!!!

I'll embed it here:

Lovely Laurent!

Great stuff!

pretty much proves my point for me on these exposures and the camera in general!

Thanks!

Did you do it all in RCX or did you use additional tools?

Gunleik,

your major problem on those images was a make up, then lighting even though you wanted to test high contrast capabilities of hardware (camera) and software (grading).

Hopefully we are here at moving images when everything is to change fast (cinematography) according to dynamics of motion pictures but not in stills when you can fix a lot of things in post just because is photography.

That's why Beatrice looks more plastic and photos hoped at Laurent grade (B) than on mine grade (A) that has more details especially on hair, less clipping in hair and face, but more harsh skin tones.

Also that's why make up has very important role and it's almost similar importance as a lighting and cinematography on set.

On a big screen (2K and 4K) everything is visible especially if you were "painted" too much over the faces in grading process to make them more pleasant.

comparison_02.jpg

Left (A) is a grade I did and right (B) is what Laurent did.

comparison_03.jpg

(A) grade more film like a real look with more details and stronger blacks, less clipping and (B) Laurent's grade that's maybe more "pleasant" but looks so plastic, unreal and videoish.
On a big screen it will be even more visible all issues related to grading and make up.

I am afraid that there is not much makeup there...

I got to test what i wanted to test for, and then you can run yours. That's only great, actually.

I am thinking about running a walkthrough on specific issues like noise etc, big differnce - I guess - is that I don't mind the clip... I shot it to clip. No reason to try to take that away afterwards.

I see a bit of the stuff Laurent has done, and I am curious if he took it a bit through photoshop/resolve. Which I don't comsider "cheating" at all. I just didn't do that for a variety of reasons. Mainly to play with the new RCX.

Cheers and thanks!

Gunleik

Gee, i love this stuff

This is why I think there will be harder to spot an Epic/Scarlet "look" than the R1

Gunleik

That's exactly what I'm talking about because on my (harsh) grades (A) is almost everything visible but with minimum clipping whites

and on Laurent's (that maybe you prefer more) but it looks that makeup is applied in a grade and that's to me exactly has plastic look (still image style) and also has a clean and washed look that I always try to avoid.

In that case make up plays one of important roles, like it or not with that sort of lighting style.

But now I already started to talk about a style...and that's me...

Video plastic look (all above grades except mine) vs. film real look (my grade that has and needs more DR stops off course).
