I'm one of those crazy directors that shoots all my own work... Because I can. I'm not talking little crap either. Some of my TVC budgets are bigger then most Indi films.
What I have to stress here is everyone runs there shoots differently and has different on set play back / video requirements. Mine different to you and vise versa. So lets not get into who is right and who is wrong..
For me...
I want to know, there an then... do I have the shot, is the angle good, is the focus good, is the action good... I want to make a snap decision. Do I do it again or do I move on...
I don't have to land and walk over to some director drinking a hot chocolate getting his back rubbed by the wardrobe chick. I don't need to answer producers or suck client dick...
I don't have to ask a director/producer or client.. what do they think and the say, sorry I wasn't watching, can you replay it.. again & again % again for me.
And so the dance continues...
Like yourself, I never have had technical issues with any shot I've done... But I do want to know in seconds, that I have the shot action exactly as I wanted it.. with as little fuss and bullshit possible.
So for all you guys that don't want or don't think the EPIC needs Playback... Then don't use it. I however will in fact embrace it with open arms and probably shoot another 25% more per day, due to not having to race back to video village to make a decisions.
This is one of those scenarios we shot in New Zealand at 14,000feet hand held. I played back in camera 2 seconds later (@120fps) and said Thats a wrap. Lets go home.

End of discussion about the importance of in-camera playback.
