  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FilmConvert - Film Stock Emulation for Red Cameras

will there be a plugins for
RCX Pro
NUKE
STORM
RESOLVE
?

Nigel,

Again, willing to help out as beta-tester. Have tons of simultaneous project on my desk. SoI am not just willing to do it, but will provide you instant feedback...

Wow that is an awesome idea.

Reminds me of these: (love no. 28 and 30)
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/08/russia_in_color_a_century_ago.html

We'll have to do something a bit different as we won't be able to shoot color charts, but I'm sure we could rustle something up. I'll look into it.

Let me add another vote for this. I love the idea. And those old Russian photos are amazing.

Also, plugins will apparently be available for Redcine-X Pro. I hope you guys can get one made.

So, let me get this conversation back to reality. Say I want to use it on a project. I get EDL or XML(?), conform my RED material, apply grain and look and export as DPX or Prrores for grading? Obviously, I'd prefer grading from RAW material for obvious reasons. But what about conform verification, mixed sources timeline (quite common these days), sizing, access to metadata, etc? What about editorial changes? Don't get me wrong, I like the look, but as a stand alone app, that is used at the very beginning of the process, it doesn't make for an easy workflow. Now, if it was a plug in for Resolve, then it would be an entirely different proposition.

Hi Jake, That is one workflow - rendering after edit.

  • Edit, and export an XML
  • Load XML into FilmConvert, render the shots used to DPX
  • Import DPX to grading app

This is the workflow that Monkey Extract was created for. We still sell copies, so some people are still doing it that way.

All shots are rendered with 5 frame handles. If there are editorial changes, that section could be exported to XML and re-rendered.

Mixed source timeline - you could do a pass for each camera type. Other camera support is coming soon.

Resized shots we can't do currently, but it's on our list. Access to metadata - I'm not sure what you mean exactly?

We would love to get all the plugin versions working so that people can use this tech directly on R3D if that is their workflow.

The first plugin is likely to be after effects / premiere, because they have a well documented API.

If people would like a Redcine-x plugin, they would be best to politely ask Deanan how the API is coming along :)

i have used your software
i like it
needs some work though

UPDATE: This bug is no longer relevant, it's been taken care of.

It has some problems with very hot areas of the image

it will not recognize files that have been exported from RCX as still r3ds that look like this "A022_C039_0819RJ_001.0000305F.r3d"
when removing the "." it reads it again

Hi Omar,

I've never seen that before. Can you send an email to craig at rubbermonkey.co.nz ? Attach the picture and let him know your camera, build, operating system etc.

Turns out there a bug in the upscaling algorithm. It can happen if you shoot at a lower res than you render. We will have a fix for this in the next day or so.

Brilliant! Hopefully it works exactly like promised. This has been something I've been wanting for some time. Any chance this'll also be released as an OFX plugin even if it's only the color transforms?

Edit: Also +2 for Win7x64

Shadow contrast feels too aggressive. Could be fixed by letting you move the blackpoint below 0 and white point above 1 though for a more LOG look. I would prefer it to come out more like a DPX scan than a pre-graded output.

Also your file browser appears to randomly organize network folders by some arbitrary order that isn't alphabetical.

But the results... wow. I wish I had permission to release them. Program does exactly what's promised. It's like the "make good button" for red footage. This would have saved a ton of time on past spots that were shot on RED.

Wishlist:

- Win7
- +1 for 5D (plus 5D settings I assume. Stupid non-rawshooting.)
- I/O points for outputing specific ranges.
- Half Float/Float output (No clipping with Overbright/Negative luminance)
- Nuke support or OFX support.
- Shadow and Highlight contrast sliders to maintain RED contrast perhaps but film hue/saturation.

The latest version of the print LUT has had the contrast dialed back a little.

But what I think you want is no print lookup, log DPX, which is coming this week.

- win7 is being worked on
- 5D coming soon too
- I/O also coming soon
- float - not sure how this would work...
- OFX is on the list, no timeframe at this stage
- contrast. a slider is planned, also we will be rendering the red in the color space that most matches the output. more info soon.

Thanks for your feedback! :) I'm excited about the things we have coming up for you guys. I wish it was all finished tomorrow.

This should be interesting

-An alexa log c look (so you could match to alexa shoots)
-In addition to various film stocks, also lab processed stocks of important films, in terms of cinematography (i.e. Saving private Ryan)
-4k render and debayer quality selector
-memory function or log, to know what was done to the file before it was exported (the various color, exposure and look settings)
-basic color grading functions and curves
