  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All the bad news...

I dont have a problem with waiting. This means I have more time to save up money then I can by my own Scarlet instead of going in halves on one! Hell Yeah!:costumed-smiley-047

Hello Jim,

Is there any news (good or bad) on REDVOLT batteries? Using RED Bricks pretty much requires rods and a heavier/bulkier setup in general. Plugging into AC power is not practical for most situations. I want to carry my EPIC-M around like a DSLR completely mobile and agile as soon as possible.

If it's bad news, I'll understand...just let us know.

Thanks for the update Jim, transparency much appreciated, now get some bloody sleep!

Aye Tim, at NAB a Mr. English suggested RED RAY Pro was 'a month or two' and '$7,000' - both obviously highly unofficial, but indicative.

And cheer up everyone, OSX Lion is released on Monday: some useful stuff, including whole disk encryption; a must for anyone who takes securing their system seriously.

Sanjin, i like you a lot, but seriously again with hdrx/iso/shutter debate? please let it go. it's getting old, and it had nothing to do with the purpose of this post

I can see that Scarlet is available at Christmas.

That also fits as a perfect Christmas present...

Also have seen some improvements with Epic 5K in Redcode color management (a.k.a Colour Science) but still has to be a little bit more done to beat Arri and Sony/Panavision.

HDRx based on shutter speed is nice but limited.

It's difficult to recover something that is not captured even try using any sort of Magic Sword (or Motion) or similar...

It reminds me on Norman Koren way of thinking who claims that is possible to get any lens correction in post but I have a big doubts about it...

That's why companies like a Leica, Zeiss, Angenieux, Cooke,... make lenses that can perfectly capture a flat image at all apertures and at the most of focal lengths...

Again with a general HDR concept that can be used in moving images I still claim that one track that can capture exposure with a clean high ISO is much safer bet than a track that can capture using a certain shutter speed.

All that means just make it as it is a simple as possible and with it can be easy to convince the best world's cinematographers with camera features that offer an IQ

or a color look (skin tones) as much closer to the latest film stocks (also close to digital look of skin tones that acquired with Canon 5DMK2)

and latitude that using safe bet HDRx exposure capture that is a clean high ISO image liberated from any sort of motion and lighting flicker artifacts (that is also very important for a slow motion HDRx capture).

Bad News? ---> Good News!! And a Humble Request

Bad News? ---> Good News!! And a Humble Request

Jim, I count myself among those folks that consider this news way more good than bad. The clarification is especially welcome and, with my own fixation being on the Fixed (pun intended), I am actually very happy. As it stood, my most wildly optimistic self thought we might see it any day now, but the more realistic optimist in me thought late summer or early autumn. But even then, I considered that any time this year would be good, and more realistic, news. So, really, you made my day. Thanks!!

I would add one very humble request; something that has been hinted at by other folks as well: With the rhythm sort of settling down a bit into a more patient waiting mode, perhaps you guys could flow some more information to us about some of the other aspects of the program. I am not asking for specific dates or proprietary details, just some updates on the thinking around some of the supporting products that have been talked about in the past. A few things that come to mind for me are:

- REDMote Pro - what are its capabilities beyond REDMote? It's relative priority? How is it effected by the parts problems?
- Scarlet Mattebox - still in the works? Differences? Size? Pricing? Priority?
- Power Modules - I have seen different module designs over time, Which ones are still on tap? Capabilities?
- I-O Modules - how are they coming along? Any specifics?
- Packages - different package considerations for Scarlet? More thoughts on Epic Stage packages?
- LCDs - Will there still be larger LCDs? Any sense of how they will fall in after current cameras start shipping?
- H.264 Module - still in the works? Any other specialty modules?
- iPad App - what's the current progress on the control app?
- 3-Axis sensor - I'd love to hear an update on the thinking behind features like the built-in motion sensor and GPS

I know, I know... it's a lot to ask. Believe me, I don't expect to get answers to all these questions, just hoping for a few tidbits here and there. As I think you have observed, a few well-placed jewels of solid information can keep all of us REDusers buzzing for days and sometimes weeks.

Thanks again for making my day... no, my week (at least)!! :hurray:   :thumbup1: :emote_happyhappy:

Hey Michael- Jarred addressed this a few days ago... something about the GLUE used is in short supply and there was only ONE manufacturer. Search his recent threads.

Could be. At REDucation Jim spoke of 'laminate' being the worst shortage - presumably for custom PCBs? Same stuff I suspect.

Thanks for the update Jim.
Delays aren't a problem for me, especially when they're communicated with such a honesty and passion.
I can only imagine how frustrating this must be for you.

Delays mean i've more time to save money for RED, so better get some extra accessories ready. ;-)

Delays are what they are. The good news is still that the cameras are performing above and beyond the intended specifications.

Actually some good news on the REDVOLT front... we did resolve that part issue Friday.. First batch of REDVOLTS should come in later next week and start going out to EPIC-M customers.

Ironically, the REDVOLT chargers start coming in the week after.. in low quantities.

Yay!!!!!

Long may this be the start of good news following... :)

Relax Jim, we all love you... :)

Thanks for the update, much appreciated.

Now go and get some sleep. Heath first, cameras second.

Today, I had a great day shooting with my R1MXSSD again. It would be a shame not to spend another summer with her shooting. Jim, thanks for that update. Its great to hear you again.

Thanks for the update.

I'm not sure you are in position to do so, but you could give us some very "good news" if you like:

A firm update on what you expect to deliver with Scarlet. What's the package and price?

I'm hoping the package is pretty final now, and that at least you know what you will offer when the time comes.

If we can't have the package I'm pretty confident that any solid update on Scarlet, with a 5 second clip perhaps, would keep the Scarlet affictionados satisfied until late August... =)

I'm sure there's good reason for it, but coming here for Scarlet news is like walking the desert...

That's OK for me, more time to save money. Please take good care of your health Jim. :sifone:

The anticipation is killing me! How has RED offended the Gods of Cinematography? Should we sacrifice something? Cameras? Filmstock? Camera assistants?

Just kiddin!

Still: WHY??

Anyways, I wish you guys good news soon. 98% were years of hard work and now 2 % are a few weeks of waiting. Not a big deal though. Still I fear that Jim and Jarred can't just relax and wait but try to find new ways to solve this problem every minute of every day.
I for my part will enjoy reading about the Epic Ms or the RED ONE which hasn't been mentioned enough lately (just my 2c).

Barely I can't get what you wanted to say!!???

Would you be so kind to elaborate more about what exactly you have in mind?

Also I do know exactly what I'm talking about and always ready to give you facts and elaborate about them...

BTW, HDRx could be a turning point of Epic but that is a need of as promptly newer and larger sensor with more efficient A/D design and set of brand new De-Bayer algorithms, etc,...
