  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Brook Willard's Epic Accessories...

Freehill sporting the FMJ. Can't wait for the other accessories. In fact, needed them yesterday :)

These top-plates look amazing! Very nice work, looking forward to your upcoming accessories.

Some questions have been raised about sizes/compatibility with other versions of Epic (M vs X)

As someone looking to invest in the Epic-S when it is released, has the Epics-S's size been discussed yet, and would these accessories be manufactured to fit if it indeed differs?

My wife "you know checking your email every 15 minutes isn't going to make the camera come any faster"

Me "Hello I'm Stephen Lovett, and I'm a Redoholic"

The workmanship on the top plate is a thing of beauty, but sitting side by side without their Epic I had visions of the "when she loved me" sequence in Toy Story running through my head :-)

Brook,

I'm seriously tempted to get my FMJ order in, in anticipation of Stage 3.

One stupid little nitpicky question: I notice from the photos that the paint doesn't really match the EPIC paint; it's noticeably darker and glossier. Any plans to change that for later runs so that it does match? The thing looks so much like it *should* be an organic part of the camera it's a shame to spoil the look that way.

Thanks

Mike

+1 Yes, trivial and nitpicky ... BUT Epic is such a gorgeous camera, I wouldn't mind them matching in color (if possible). Great work either way, Brook :)

By the time you add all your crap on top, nobody notices the color is off.

I considered a powder coating [like the camera] but decided to pass on it for two reasons. One, it's expensive and would needlessly increase the cost of the parts considering my low volume. Two, there's chance that the coating would chip off or wear out at some point. I decided to tumble the parts in walnut shells and anodize them black. It's a very fast and low-cost process which results in a very cool "black galvanized" look. If anybody ever wants a different finish, I can certainly do it as a special order... just keep in mind that the price would go up a notable amount.

If the Xs or Ss end up as a different size, I will certainly make parts for them. My understanding is that all Epic Ms, Xs and Ss will be the same size. The Xs and Ss will probably be cast from the same molds if I had to guess [and that is a guess]. The Ms - while machined - are actually drafted for casting.

Brook what are the current lead times on your FMJ if an order were to be placed pretty soon?

Lead time is usually 0-2 days, most ship same day. That is my plan... Keep the machines turning all day to eliminate delays. With these parts I'm not at the mercy of a supplier. :)

Brook what do you do with all the walnuts you use to get the shells for tumbling?

Crafty!

Brook,

Has anyone at RED confirmed that the Ms and Xs are the exact same dimensions?

Even though that would make the most sense, a significant size difference could screw up a lot of people. (Both consumers and manufacturers of accessories).

Is that size confirmation delaying the release of the base adapters and side handles?

No delay, I'm just changing around their shape slightly to make them less expensive. As pictured they actually required more machine time than the top plate itself! The spacers and iris rod brackets are in full production and everything will be shipping on schedule. There have been a few final tweaks based on real-world testing of prototypes. I'm in NYC right now so shipping prototypes back and forth has been a pain.

If something changes with regards to the M/X/S size, I will certainly make parts for the different bodies. Based on my understanding it is RED's intent for the bodies to be the same shape/size.

These look very nice; just ordered three! Now just waiting on our -M's to arrive so we have something to put em on!
