  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1. The situation in Japan has affected us, along with the rest of the industry. We are like ants looking for an alternate route to the sugar. It is affecting EPIC-X and Scarlet 8X the most. We can't give specific dates because we are in line for parts from alternate suppliers along with everyone else. We do know that we are sitting here with a ton of inventory of parts and pieces ready to roll and the latest it could possibly be to get EPIC-X in production is June. We are trying for sooner. Even if we begin production in June, we think we can clear all orders by end of summer. We have purchased, at great expense, parts to make EPIC-Ms... and are ramping up production again on this model.

2. We announced the RED Dragon. It is of the Monstro family and is scheduled to be released in 2012. The significance of this sensor is that it is an upgrade to the current EPIC-X and EPIC-M and not a new brain. Obsolescence obsolete is alive.

3. We have shown the iPad "Mission Control" application.

4. We are working on a home 4K laser projector.

5. There is a new REDCINE-X to be released this week with Rocket support for EPIC and a ton of new features. N/C as always.

6. REDray Professional is scheduled to ship in June. Price to be announced prior to shipping. Well under $10K. REDray consumer in 2012 under $1000.

The uncertainty of supply chain weighs heavily on us. As paralyzed as we feel, we acknowledge that there are many others in Japan that continue to suffer unthinkable pain and consequences. The news is now diverting away from Japan, but the significance of the situation does not track with the news. It continues to be unimaginable.

Thanks to all of our customers for your support and patience. What we are attempting to do is unprecedented in any industry. We are swinging for the fences. Apparently, we are beginning to inspire others to step up their game. We like that. But we still are continuing to stretch towards the impossible for our customers and supporters.

I wasn't expecting to hear anything about release dates as the Japan quake probably has those (and maybe even prices?) up in the air, but I was really hoping we'd get final specs on Epic-S and Scarlet (not sure how much the HDRx upgrade has changed the latter)...

By the way the iPad app is really cool.
 
We have not and will not post the size and specs of the RED Dragon sensor until we are ready to ship. We are no longer interested to telegraph our roadmap to our competitors. I will say that the RED Dragon is significant.

Have you guys got a rough idea yet on update for specs list and stages update for the X,S and Fixed? Is it possible that we'll see the update before next month?

Very awesome stuff though with the Dragon program, really great for those taking the dive with the X
 
It seems hollow to post now about EPIC-S specs until we recover from the supply chain issues and get production rolling. EPIC-S comes after EPIC-X. The frame rates and date rates are less, as is the price.

Looking forward to all the great work from RED. And yes: I cant't wait to have an EPIC X in hand right now, because this camera is to sexy ;-)
 
I'm excited about the projector! The market is solely lacking in (relatively) affordable options in this area. We have certainly wanted RED to release one for (what feels) a very long time! Is there anything the RED team could share beyond that? Would a prototype be ready at least this year?
 
Red Dragon is awesome news and shouldn't be minimized! It will help compensate greatly for the delays you have been experiencing.

If you had the parts for the Scarlet 8X and EPIC-X arrive together. Would the release of Scarlet still inherently be after EPIC-X shipments are completed (as a matter of principle to early RED1 adopters) or could they be assembled and shipped independently?


P.S I'm in theatrical exhibition for a living, would love to hear RED are making 4K projectors for cinemas too sometime
 
These are amazing announcements, truly. You all deserve a little wind in your backs, and I'm sure it will come soon, in one way or another. One question:

Is it plausible for RED to develop any kind of 3D monitoring? Large or small?

It felt great to be at the red booth and the projector area.Jim and Ted and the whole team was really charged up specially Ted...Jim was at his dignified best.The whole team specially Jim and Ted were so much crowded with redusers that I would not get the chance to shake hands with them..will surely do tomorrow.Epic Looks sexy and looks very much the camera of future..Kelly was there.. even at this advance stage of pregnancy.....that talks a lot about the dedication of the Red Team....best wishes to all of the team.

The Red Dragon sensor announcement is truly amazing, and it beautifully keeps in the spirit of Red.

Speaking only for myself, I am in no rush to get my Epic. Guess I'm still having too much fun with my Red One. :)

However, there are a lot of us out here that would love an updated clarification of the Stages ... if that is possible.

I know that Stage 2 and 3 owners are curious what their package will include, and what additional options are available.
Some of us in Stage 3.5 are hoping for some kind of option to keep our Red One cameras.
All of us are curious about prices and when Stage 3 and 3.5 deposits might be asked for. It would just help with planning.

Is there a way to make that type of official announcement, or has the technological supply chain disruption put too many moving targets out there to make bankable statements?

I'm sad to hear this, but on the other hand I completely understand why Red has made this choice.

I'm planning to be an Epic-S customer. But this would only be to tide me over until Red releases a FF35 camera. If I knew that the Red Dragon upgrade for an Epic-X would offer installing a FF35 senor, I would skip the Epic-S all together. But if this wasn't the case, I'd probably just stick to the original plan.

It would be a great piece of knowledge to know beforehand, but I remind myself that any other company in this industry would remain just as tight-lipped about their future products too.

We all understand that the Japan situation has changed things. But you did tell everyone on March 20th, in a thread in which you'd already acknowledged the Japan supply chain issues (this was 9 days after the earthquake hit), that EPIC-S and SCARLET Fixed specs would be "locked down by NAB." Many of us were thus expecting new information about these cameras now that NAB is here. Don't get me wrong -- I'm not armchair quarterbacking here. I've been here at NAB all week and I've been to your impressive booth. The Tattoo short was great and seeing it in 4K was worth the trip. Seeing the girl get tattooed out front with nice big monitors displaying the RED camera images in real time was also nice. But the booth seemed strangely bereft of actual new information... about cameras, or ordering them... and the website is also frustratingly devoid of real, findable information. Where is the information about RED Dragon online? There's nothing in the "Press" section of the website, or anything new on the homepage for that matter.

Holding the cameras is nice, but in your booth there is nothing posted or playing on the monitors to inform inquiring customers of what's new. I say this as someone whose website (nofilmschool.com) will get around half a million page views this month, and I'd like to tell my readers (all of whom are potential RED customers) what exactly is new with RED. I'm also an award-winning filmmaker and am myself thinking about spending a good deal of money (for me, at least) on one of your new cameras.

We've been waiting a long time for news on SCARLET or EPIC-S, and now we're told it's "hollow" to wonder about such things, even though we were expecting news based on what you yourself had told us. I'm not trying to demand you release information on these cameras, I'm just saying what I guarantee you a lot of people are thinking. Good luck with the supply chain issues and please update us when you can.
