  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2011 update...

I think is is a good bunch of announcements. I love the Monstro concept: a better sensor for my photography and a better sensor to stuff the red haters with. ;)

I do think it is much more exciting for those that are not as up to date with Red like most of us are here.

Prost,
Rich

I think the big news is RED and APPLE partner to use REDRay/REDCode as the new, highly efficient way for INDIE filmakers to make their 4K content available, via iTunes download, for sale to the public.

Yeaaahh. That ain't gonna happen. I just sent 10 music videos to Apple on HD Cam SR and it ends up in the itunes store at 640x352 in H.264 with a total bit rate of 1777 kpbs.

That's exactly why REDRay is needed!

Steve Jobs already said it. DVD distribution is a dead end technology.

REDRAy player/projectors in the Cinema, REDRay computer codec for home. iTunes downloads.

Now THAT would be BIG news!

Jobs may have said DVD may be dead (though the square meterage allocated in most retailers might suggest otherwise at the moment) but that doesn't mean Apple are going to allocate the required storage and bandwidth required for 4k delivery. And the thousands of existing products in the store? All re-ingested and re-supplied? Who pays?

It's not gonna happen any time in the next 5 years. I'd put money on it. Especially when 4k finishing is in the minority right now.

but bare in mind SJ wouldn't do 1080p+ because people don't have the same to store it, average people at least don't...
@ 4K, not many consumers if any have a 4K capable TV, its all 1080p or less so would be rather pointless...
Given I could be wrong so...lets wait and see!

Thursdays the Apple announcement isn't it?
Definitely FCS is doing 5K and is probably going to rip into Premier Pro but...given all this talk about them going a step further I'm always worried they miss out on the things that would be nice, like no render times or back ground rendering
and programs like Motion up to par with AE (something about Motion annoys me)

Wouldn't RED announce everything day one though? :S

I like DVD's and BR's....but then again I like my vinyl collection too. Maybe people shouldn't listen to me...

IF there was anything more from RED, we would know by now. I think they had hoped to be in a different place right now but with recent events throwing things up in the air they have had to pull it back.

Apple is about to throw the switch on a new data center in North Carolina. I believe it is the first of two but on that point I am not sure. I think I read this one would have something like 13 petabytes of storage. So, who knows what they'll decide to do with it? :001_rolleyes:

It took VHS 5-7 years to fully die, Most if not all homes have a DVD player. Most run their Blu-Rays of a Play station 3. I wouldn't say DVD distribution is fully dead

There will be companies trying to capaitalize on any past investments they have in it, but I don't think is likely to attract much R&D or new product introductions at this point.

Any news on Stage 2? Stage 3? Backorder on SSD or Bomb EVF? I don't care about future products anymore. What can I get today. Were there RED ONE's all over the booth? That's the only thing you can buy today.

I hate to be so negative, but I'm ready to buy Epic-X and I can't.

Okay so Mike Seymour and Joseph Hutson both confirms that Dragon is the "Big News". I can't help feeling a bit sorry for all the people paying thousands of dollars going there for this announcement.

I know that what ever I say wont make any difference at all, but on the contrary I might get banned and disliked for it here and that's why I've refrained from posting the last year. But it's with the outmost respect I beg you to rethink your marketing and how you announce products. You are an excellent R&D company years before the competition. But as a product company things are a mess.

Why do you insist on announcing announcements and tell people about products so early in the R&D phase that technology needs to catch up while still unable to deliver on promises made years ago? I'm trying hard to figure out the reasoning behind this. Because lately it has created more bad will then positive branding for you guys. It's no longer about being open because you clearly see how disappointed people get about delays upon delays, let downs and price changes. I know what Jims signature says, but a signature never trumps human psychology. You profile yourself as renegades with the motto "We don't know what we are doing" - Your turnover is hundreds of millions of dollars and have 6 years to figure things out, I think it's safe to say you are out of the startup phase and maybe it's time to drop the renegade label and step up as the key player you would be if you held your deadlines and became a camera supplier instead of and R&D company.

I have a deep respect for what you are doing for the film industry and as I've said, your R&D work is much appreciated. But please, I beg you, rethink how you go about marketing and the business of supplying products.

I would like to apologize beforehand if I offend anyone. Thank you for your time.

I think we should wait till after NAB before making pronouncements about Red or any other manufacturer. Everyone is scrambling right now. Sony has lost what ever edge they hoped to get against Scarlet, unless some miracle happens between now and July.

would be a crazy idea but why not pass on some of the cost (they say they can get the parts but prices are going up daily, moving target etc.) to the consumers? EPIC-M allowance to Stage 2s, they pay a bit extra etc. or Stage 2 pay a bit more then their stage and get their cams early, for those that want it now, those that dont mind waiting can hold off...
The whole early adopters pay more but seems fair on both sides to try and get the cams out, as hard as RED is trying I guess the issue is cost and availability? Eliminate one and the other maybe easier to hit?

I suppose the question is, what do you qualify as big news? If it is the following:
  1. Taking fixed Scarlet orders
  2. Taking Epic-S orders
  3. Taking Epic-X orders
  4. Increased production of all backordered items
  5. 4K projector finished and ready to ship
  6. RED Dragon specs
  7. RED Rocket 2
  8. RED acquisition of {insert name of company}

Then yes, as of right now you may be disappointed. I think we have to keep expectations in check in terms of new stuff. The industry is paying attention. RED's approach is probably going to change in terms of how they reveal what they are working on. Circumstances around the world may have also contributed to some change in timelines at NAB this year.

Let's recap on Thursday when all news is out and we can form more complete opinions on whether this is a disappointing year. There is still some news left to come, just not today. And remember that NAB is an industry show. RED is part of it but there are many reasons for investing in a trip to NAB. Hopefully people are not ignoring all of the other exciting things happening on the show floor. Even with what we have seen announced so far I would think this would be a worthwhile trip if you are able to do it. I couldn't this year because of work commitments but I'd be checking out everything I could if I was there.

"Unique in the RED philosophy of business practice is the notion of transparency. RED is often criticized for announcing product releases before their time, having schedule set backs, shooting for a feature set and design to be released in one year, going back to the drawing board and re-designing the whole product for release another year. It can be maddening for the consumer who eagerly waits for every announcement and equally frustrating for the folks at RED who so desperately want to do what they have promised. Such is the nature of operating transparently. RED has let the public in on the process, one that is usually left behind locked doors. RED's mistakes, setbacks and successes are all experienced in real time, by themselves and by their customers. The benefit to RED is that the feedback from their customers help mold the product. RED cameras are very much a reflection of customer and user feedback, as well as having been designed and built by people as passionate about the art as their customers. The benefits to the consumer are cameras that do what people want cameras to do, without constraints, without the incremental doling out of features, cameras that push the state-of-the-art limits of technology, without compromise."

What's with the whining? You can buy a Red One, or any number of other cameras to work with. Because the Epic and Scarlet give so much better price / performance than anything else in the world, people can't wait to get them. But that enthusiasm seems to sometimes morph into a feeling of entitlement. Red does not owe you anything. They are clearly working their butts off to get things out as fast as possible. Things will be done when they're done, so relax and appreciate all the effort. Other manufacturers don't create this problem by sharing the tribulations of developing a game changing product. I prefer knowing what's happening, and watching it unfold. And that knowledge has prevented me from blowing money on the wrong products in the mean time.

Thanks, Red team, for the products and the information.

And, BTW, being able to upgrade the Epic sensor without having to buy another 28K brain, is REALLY COOL !! Good surprise. I guess people are expecting more fanfare. Perhaps things are muted a little by the supply chain problems. Either way, it's another remarkable effort to avoid obsolescence.
